“I mean, yeah, I’ve seen midget strippers before,” she agreed and looked down at his piece as it glided across the board. His remark caught her attention. Harper looked up as he sucked his teeth. “At least a hundred,” she added. “So,” she rolled the dice and moved her piece another four spaces. “You ever been to a strip club? Or even had your own stripper before?” she teased and smiled at the dark-haired boy.

Keeping her eyes on the other girl as she spoke, Ariel crossed her arms over her chest, really not enjoying being talked to like this. She didn’t appreciate when others told her how to act. Sure, she looked like she couldn’t hurt a fly, but that was what she loved so much about herself. “They’re supposed to keep us happy,” she explained, shaking her head. Poking the egg with her fork, she hoped that if she imagined it enough that it might change if she poked it long enough. Sticking her tongue out, she looked down at her food, half grossed out at the food and half at the girl’s response to her. “So what? The guards know I won’t do it over something so foolish as food. Someone irritating me with her sarcastic comments, that’s possible,” she said, trying to take a bite of the egg, chewing it slowly.

“They’re supposed to keep us sane...ish...” she rebutted, “nowhere in my contract did anyone agree to make me happy.” As the other spoke, Harper chewed her breakfast with tight lips. She gave a close-lipped grin and her eyes twinkled. “Just trying to bring you back into reality. The reality being that the staff is so underpaid, they’re not going to give a shit about the slop they serve us.” Harper took another drink of her beverage to wet her whistle. “Yeah, this is nasty and looks like actual sewer water, but it’s something,” her eyes peeked into her cup and she grimaced at it. “Some people would rather starve than eat this, but honestly, I’d rather eat it willingly and at the pace I prefer, you know?” she asked sweetly and slightly condescending. Harper couldn’t help but come off as a total bitch sometimes, it was in her nature; it was also in her resting bitch face. “Anyways, I’m Harper,” she introduced herself to her brunch mate.

Push me, and I will.” Kennedy was flustered and, as of late, didn’t handle stress all that well. The last thing she needed was for one of the damn brats in here getting on her nerves. “I don’t attend service here, dear, and I haven’t for years now. Weekly worship wasn’t a part of the contract I signed.” Kennedy wasn’t even sure that she believed in god. It made no difference to her, whether the entity existed or not, and she wasn’t going to let it interfere with her doing her work here. “If you want it, fix it yourself, Harper, I’m not your maid, nor am I your slave. I’m not fixing your coffee,” There was no way in hell that was happening - she wasn’t paid enough to play housekeeper for these people. “So get up, or go without.”

“Whatever, I’m getting cheese fries,” she quoted as she flipped her long hair over her shoulder. Harper stopped listening to the fellow ginger before her. “I’m alright anyways. I just like messing with the people here. Keep you guys on your feet,” she shrugged. “I guess I’ll just get going anyways. By the looks of it, you obviously weren’t expecting any visitors.” She looked around the office and met eyes with the doctor once again. “I’ll let you, ahem, tidy up in here, and maybe we can grab that coffee another time,” she said as she smirked. “Oh, and I’m pretty sure stimulants are part of my diet restrictions, so, maybe keep your door shut.” Her face went straight as she dropped the corners of her mouth. “Good day, ma’am,” she bid the broad a’do and went on her way, “I think it’s time for my mandatory prayer circle session since that’s in my contract to this dump.”

“i think the question you’re meanin’ to ask is what isn’t wrong with me.”  archie eyed the red headed girl, a slight smile appearing on his features before falling again. almost as if it were forced. he always enjoyed company, as long as he wasn’t having a episode or a meltdown. archie was probably one of the friendliest red level patients in the building. harper was a character, and he meant it in the best way possible. she was unlike most other patients he met. she kept herself real and didn’t conform to the beliefs of these people. and she gave him the attention he craved. all pluses in his book. “i know, i know. i appreciate it, harper. y’er too kind to me y’know that right?” he grinned faintly. “just down n’ stuff. didn’t get nothin’ in the mail again.” he shrugs his shoulders some, turning towards the woman as he pulled his legs up onto the couch - a hand coming out to run his fingers idly over her knee. “i don’t think there’s anyone left out there that cares about me.” he murmured. 

As she felt the warmth from his fingers along her leg, Harper grew a smile as her eyes twinkled at the boy. “I know, this place really puts a damper on, well, everything,” she sighed softly and understandingly, “but you shouldn’t let it get to you.” She stood from her seat to join Archie on the couch. Aware of the rules in place during their free time in the rec room, she ignored them so she could provide comfort for her friend and ally. “Scootch,” she said fanning her hands towards him. She plopped her booty right in the couch and allowed him to stretch his legs across her lap. Once settled in, she looked him in his beautiful eyes. “Mail’s been slow for me too, Archiekins... Don’t get so down on yourself... I care about,” she reassured him with passion in her eyes, and a hand on his knee, gently squeezing the joining part of his thigh to the knee. “Don’t you forget that. You will always have me on your team.”

“Open or not, this is an office and you don’t come barging in here, little girl. Do it again and there’ll be consequences.” Kennedy usually wasn’t so sharp with patients, but she had been in the office all day and she was tired - and she didn’t take well to her personal space being invaded, especially by a patient, but she meant every word she said. Fellow staff, she didn’t mind too much. “The lord doesn’t hear what’s said in this office.” She replied, shoulders rising and falling in a halfhearted shrug. Watching the girl, Kennedy couldn’t help but chuckle. “Yeah, it’s a good blend of coffee. Absolutely delicious. I suppose you’d like some?”

“Oh, please, don’t patronize me, Kennedy. I’m a fearless woman, not a child.” Her voice stern and demeanor palpable. As she stepped into the office, Harper stood in front of the doctor and raised her eyebrow at her. “Haven’t you listened to anything during prayer, or even from your mother, doctor? I think you should take a look at  Exodus 20:7 once more, just as a little refresher, no?” she questioned with condescendence and a slight head turn. “You know, I would love a cup of coffee, now that you mention the obvious. Thanks,” she remarked. The redhead plopped down in the open chair in the corner facing the doctor. “Cream and two sugars, please,” Harper ordered with a confident smile as she looked up at the woman.

The girl, Harper, was pretty in a way that Charlie had only ever wished she could be, but she was nice, too and that only made the quite brunette like her more. Her smile was genuine, tone soft, and instantly she’d been deemed a friend. Most people were, unless they were scary, loud, or mean. Eyes glancing down at her pen, chestnut strands bounced around her face with her nod, lifting it to turn it in the sunlight so the little pink rhinestones that decorated the gel pen could catch the light, leaving bright white pinpricks of it spotted across her face much like her freckles. Expressive face falling into a look of questioning, she lifted her book and tapped the cover before motioning at her new friend. Journal, too? Not that that’s really what you could call whatever it was that Charlie did. 

As the other raised her sparkling pen to the sunlight, Harper watched the rays dance off the jewels and sparkle. Her attention glazed back over to Charlie as she tapped the notebook in hand. “I used to have one in school. It was always so overwhelming for me as a teenager,” she explained, “school that is.” Her tone went a bit serious but still soft and airy. “Some girls wrote love notes or gossip in their group chats with friends. I was quiet in high school, and since I’m so hot, most of the girls were intimidated by me. So, I never really had that group of friends I could talk to,” she went on. Harper didn’t have time for fake friends anyways, so she thought it was better that no one wanted to approach her. It gave her more time to herself and less drama to deal with. “So, I jotted down ideas and little stories in my notepad during lunch and after art lessons,” she smiled to the girl and shook her head gently while looking down. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to ramble. But I love creative thoughts; I’m more of a painter. You know, a picture says a thousand words. Plus, it’s more up to interpretation that way,” she added quickly.

“That’s because he’s clearly an idiot.” Solitary hadn’t done him any good, truth be told. The only difference was the security detail. Anywhere he went, they were right there. Just waiting. Sooner or later, he would ditch them. He had PLANS after all, and they didn’t include them standing around. The medication kept him sedated just enough not to see his demon friend, but he knew he was there. He was ALWAYS there. Dexter didn’t need to see him to know he was there, always WATCHING. “7 is a good number. The number of the deadly sins. It could be a sign.” He snatched the dice, rolling a nine. It wasn’t as lucky, but it put him in the lead again. 

“Well, he’s a guy, so...” she quoted with an eye roll. “He’s my baby brother, not T-Pain or... Drake? He can’t be falling in love with strippers, I’m sorry,” she added with disapproval. Harper smirked a bit in the presence of her opponent. “A sign of what, exactly?” she asked charmingly. Maybe he was right, maybe something was going to happen; good or sinful, perhaps. Her light brown eyes stared up at Dexter as her demeanor drew serious. She gave a small “hmp” sound from the back of her mouth as she traced the dice with her fingers before taking them back. “My turn, lucky boy.”

“Aw, we love a man whose heart is in his sack.” Alfie cooed, watching her move the piece around the board before picking up the dice. “It’s always the best when they catch feelings in their open wallet. No offense to your brother, or anything.”

As though Alfie had any issues with money. Even Monopoly money, if the pile in front of him - mostly scammed off of a third player they’d already bankrupted, plus a few smart investments - was anything to go by.

“No offense taken,” she replied with a soft shrug. “I mean, who could resist a long-legged broad with red floss between her buttcheeks, right?” A giggle squeezed past her lips as she winked at her opponent. She sat straight up in her seat as she watched him roll. Naturally, she felt competitive in everything she did. Whether someone was challenging her in a race, a board game, or even in the bedroom; it was always who could go the farthest with the activity. It was always who could endure the most pain and suffering. It was always who could come out on top. Of course, Harper knew she would be successful in all of it. “I know, hard to take your eyes off dancing women wrapping themselves around a shiny pole... Difficult to resist their charm, right?” she teased, “Impossible to escape their spell when they’re assuring you that you’re special, that you are the only two in the whole world,” she went on as her voice lowered. “I mean, isn’t it?”

Jax had finally, finally gotten his shipment in and as a result was feeling much better and doing worse as usual. He at least remembered to spit out his morphine sucker before going to group therapy for drug addiction, but just sat there with a dumb look on his face the whole time, making the group leader roll his eyes. “Hey,” he said, finding Harper afterward and kicking the backs of her feet until she noticed him. “How was group? I’m bored, do something interesting.”

Listening to everyone’s recovery stories and steps, really made Harper feel... not different at all, honestly. She didn’t really care about anyone’s sob stories, fictional or not. As usual, she sat with droopy lids, trying her hardest to stay awake during the meeting. It didn’t work. Her brief nap was disrupted by a tall figure. Harper awoke and shook her head to reveal the tall figure was just Jax. She smiled in relief and stood up before him. “Oh, hey,” she said as she cleared her throat. “Let’s blow this popsicle stand, babe.”

“why’re you lookin’ at me like that?” his brows furrowed together as he studied the person near him, on guard and tense. they were going to get him in trouble, trapped in his room again strapped to his bed for weeks upon weeks, sitting in his own filth. “so help me god i will fuckin’ scream if you come too close to me.” most of the time archie was happy go lucky, and gentle, but today clearly he had some imbalances and his delusions were effecting how he was perceiving things around him. 

“Oh, shush, Archiekins,” she flirted playfully, “What’s wrong with you?” Harper took the seat next to him and crossed her legs. “You can’t threaten me with a good time, you know that,” she said with a tight smile as her hair caressed her shoulder. She was happy to have someone like Archie to have fun with and talk to in this place. A small laugh passed her plump lips as she relaxed into the chair. “I’m just trying to make you smile a little, Arch,” Harper explained, keeping space between the two to make him comfortable.

“My brother never really got the concept of strip clubs...” she began as she adjusted herself in her seat. “I don’t know, he keeps falling in love,” Harper rolled her eyes and shook her head, “he’s so stupid sometimes, I swear.” She rolled the dice for the board game she was playing with the other person across the table from her. “Another seven? Dammit,” she muttered as she moved her game piece.

The sound of a voice pulled her suddenly from her reverie with a little jolt, though she calmed a little when there didn’t seem to be a threat near by. Breathing a literal sigh of relief, her pen lowered into the cleft of the pages, marking her place though she had yet to close her journal. Only lowering it down to rest on top of the star flashlight held in her lap by her folded legs. Frustrated words brought a small giggle past still pale lips, head nodding her agreement as she made a little face of disgust. She’d not even been able to get through half of that book, and hadn’t even attempted any of the others. Chewing her lip a little as she smiled at the apology, a small hand lifted to give it a wave away. It’s okay, no need to apologize. Holding the same hand out for a shake, her smile was warm. There was nothing the tiny girl loved more than making new friends. Holding up the little ID tag one of the nurses had made, laminated, and hung on a sparkly pink string for her so she could wear it around her neck, tapping it with a finger. ‘Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Marie Rose’. 

A smile curled across her lips as she watched the other wave her hand. “I’m Harper,” she introduced as she gently hugged hands with the girl. She watched the gestures towards the nametag. “Charlie?” she asked in a sweet tone. Harper looked into the other’s eyes and nodded, “A good friend of mine back home was named Charlotte.” She smiled again at Charlie as she took her hand back. She noticed the pink theme among the girl and tossed her own hair into a loose twisty bun. “I like your pen, by the way,” she commented, “I personally never liked writing with glitter pens.” Harper shrugged her shoulders a bit and folded the blanket in her lap. “I always preferred blue ink gel pens, or ballpoints if it was all I could find,” she added.
