CATATONIC  AND  ICE  COLD  IN  HER  SISTER’S  ARMS.     elethea  was  quite  certain  she  was  not  built  for  such  things.  injuring  and  being  injured  in  kind.  frightened  eyes  remain  glued  to  her  fallen  adversary,  her  hands  grasped  desperately  at  the  cut  that  had  been  sliced  across  her  throat.  miraculously  shallow,  but  still  bleeding.     she  had  never  killed  anyone,  before.     lessons  with  the  knights  had  always  been  just  that,  lessons,  sparring.  no  one  had  ever  been  more  injured  than  a  sprain  or  a  scrape.  but  she  was  a  killer,  now.  he  would  have  killed  her,  true,  but  his  body  fallen  at  her  feet  had  been  felled  by  her  inexperienced  hand.  she  had  never  been  injured  before,  either.  not  beyond  a  broken  leg  or  a  papercut.  but  now  she  had  a  handful  of  weeping  wounds  haphazardly  bandaged  with  fabric  torn  from  her  own  nightgown,  and  had  been  a  centimeter  from  having  her  throat  slit.

“lilly,  he–  he–”     she  wheezed,  gasping  for  air.  bloodied  hands  grasp  at  her  twin’s  sleeves,  sobbing,  choking.  the  blood  on  her  hands  both  her  own  and  her  victim’s.  hands  and  legs  trembling  with  fear.     “i  can’t  feel  my  legs…”

           THEY WERE ALL DEAD around them, and for a second, lily thought she was going to watch her twin sister die as well. only after close inspection she had realized that the cut on elethea’s throat wasn’t deep. STILL, she was shaking. the only thing keeping her from a full blown meltdown was the fact her sister NEEDED her more than lily needed to break.  ❝ ellie, just BREATHE. shhh. look at me, it’s fine. it’s a small cut, okay? i’ll bandage you up, we’ll be fine-- ❞

          they had so much blood on their nightgowns, it was hard to believe neither had been actually gravely INJURED.  ❝ you’re in shock. just focus on breathing and it’ll pass. look at me, i’m not going anywhere. ❞ their mabaris were still close by, so they also wouldn’t be caught off guard, but lily was still worried. judging by the noise outside the walls, those weren’t just a few INTRUDERS. the entire castle was being attacked and it was just a matter of time before they were found again. 

          ❝ can you go sit on my bed? i need to fix that. and we need to gear up. something is WRONG. ❞

           ‘FOR YOU I CAN ALWAYS BE DRAGGED’. there. that was the type of thing he said to her that forced her to smile even when she didn’t want to. the more she thought about the things they went through during the fifth blight, the more lily was convinced that alistair (along with leliana and wynne) changed EVERYTHING for her. but especially him. from the start, he was there, with his incurable sense of humor, steering her away from the darkness that still threatened to take her over to this day. 

          he had no idea how important he was. ❝ catching up it is. i think there’s a tavern nearby. near the tower, i think? come on, my treat this time. ❞ she gestured for him to follow her and started walking out of the garden.  ❝ you start. although i got the gist of it from the INQUISITOR, i don’t know how deep you’re involved with this whole... warden conspiracy. ❞

             NOT THAT SHE HAD any doubt before --- what with the way he dressed and how he carried that musical instrument around like it was his choice of weapon --- but if she did, then listening to the way he SPOKE was a clear indicator that he was definitely a bard. or, at least, a minstrel. sometimes lily still struggled with what was which. 

            ❝ it’d be no imposition, really. ❞ in fact, any type of work usually helped her FOCUS on anything that wasn’t the hell inside her head. still, if not work, a conversation would do just fin as well. before she answered him, lily sat down as well and sighed.  ❝ it’s a pleasure to meet you, jaskier. i’m lillian cousland, but you may call me lily. ❞ he reminded her of someone, which caused her to be UNABLE to take her green eyes off of him. 

            lily just couldn’t put her finger on who it was that he resembled so.  ❝ are you headed to skyhold as well? ❞

            perhaps that was the hardest lesson lily ever had to learn in her life. everyone in the world was SUFFERING in one way or another. and while every type of suffering is sad, not all suffering is the same.  ❝ when your body dies it’s certainly sad, but when your soul perishes... it’s that MOMENT when you feel like there’s nothing else holding you down. grounding you. that’s true loss. death of the flesh is peaceful. death of the soul is hard and demands confrontation. ❞
