“ wouldn’t we all. ” despite the teasing manner of her words, there was still a small part of her that wished it were true. despite knowing better, there was a part of her that wanted to shed the years worth of conditioning her father had made her go through. “ you definitely are. you’re pretty close, there’s just a few things that need to be cleaned up but you’re pretty much done. ” she grinned despite herself, the encouraging expression only lasting for a moment before she went back to being neutral. “ the easiest way to learn is to learn your letters first, ” she began, opening one of the books in front of her before sliding it over to adri. “ once you master the letters we can begin forming words and then transition into sentences. ”

“i think all of that cleaning up will have to happen with real word experience,” she spoke with a smirk. adriana was always yearning to actually get out and do things. she wanted to be out in the field. she wanted to be getting things done. adri wasn’t sure just how much longer she could just sit around and watch everything happen around her. she watched intently as her instructor collected a book for the two of them to work with. she got out a pen and paper and waited for instructions. “this should not take long.”

“ yeah, yeah. ” putting herself back in position, amiria went for the offense, aiming a kick and then two more punches. normally, she hated combat, but the past few months had shown a rocketing rate of improvement. maybe it was the new people. dare she might even say she was having fun?

she took a step back from the other and readied her hands into a defensive position. that was how this worked. amira took the offense and she took the defense. she dodged the kick and the first of the punches, but the second punch landed right on her side. adriana shook her head and let out a breath. “again,” she spoke and raised her arms up again.

“yeah but where’s the fun in that? they still learned something from me helping them,” tessa shrugged and sliced another piece of apple from the core before handing it over to adri. “yeah they said you were a terrible shot or something, i don’t know i wasn’t listening.” her tone was teasing and of course it was evident by the shit eating grin on her face to accompany it. “i think we’re fine up here. it’s an old ass tree.”

“the fun is watching them lose,” she spoke with a laugh. adri reached out her and and gently took the apple slice from the other. “oh i am a terrible shot?” she asked with a raise of her brow before taking a bite from her slice. “they are not entirely wrong. i am not . GREAT shot. but a terrible shot is definitely unfair.” adri finished up her slice and shifted on her spot.

THE  GIRL’S  ATTITUDE  RIGHT   off  the  back  struck  a  chord  in  baby .  she  was  rightfully  aggravted ,  sure ,  but  baby  sure  as  hell  didn’t  expect  it .          ‘  yea  ––  if  you  had  graduated  the  academy  by  now ,  go  for  it .    ’     she  spoke  as  she  flicked  the  end  of  her  cigarette  and  watched  the  ashes  hit  the  bottom  of  the  ashe  tray .          ‘  i  mean ,  you’re  a  fucking  student .  relax .   ’     

she pulled her knee in even closer to her chest. adriana rolled her eyes at the girl’s comments. “i have been training for four years now, you would think that i could do at least SOMETHING to help,” she spoke and shook her head. she felt completely powerless during all of this. her home had been attacked and she was forced to just run away from it. they were supposed to be the people who ran TOWARDS danger, not away.

    he had just finished his final class of the day, a few of the younger cadets following him out with their questions, to which he was secretly glad to answer. it was always so rewarding seeing each of them grow in the skill, though he’d seldom say it. it was only after the final of them went on their way that he was left on his own, gaze turning down the corridor and, fortunately for him, picking out the more than familiar brunette.   “   subtle as always, adriana,   ”   there’s a smirk on his mouth as he steps into her path and clasps his hands behind his back,   “   off to anywhere important?   ”

she kept her book raised up to her face, even as he crossed his way into her path. adriana’s eyes rolled from behind her book. she sighed and lowered the book down to her side. “i’m off to a less.” a lie. she was finished for the day. she had absolutely nothing she should be doing, but she did have plenty of things she could be doing. she could be training more, she could be working harder. “well i’ve gotta run,” she spoke and unsuccessfully tried to brush past him.

she crossed her own arms, mimicking her instructor. adri leaned against the wall nearest them and grinned. “you get to spend more time with one of your favorite cadets,” she spoke confidently. “and i get more experience.” that’s all she wanted, experience. she was always hungry for more. she craved it.

SHE  RAISED  THE  GLASS   filled  with  jack  &  coke  to  her  lips  as  the  cigarette  butt  flittered  between  her  first  two  fingers .  it  was  her  natural  scent ,  really .  the  smoke  surrounded  by  the  most  innocent  rose  smelling  perfume  was  a  good  decription  of  baby .  after  letting  the  alcohol  and  soda  mixture  slide  down  her  throat ,  she  spoke  up  for  the  first  time  that  night .          ‘  i  mean  it’s  not  that  bad  right ?  combining  units ?    ’     she  lowered  the  glass  onto  the  bar  top  in  front  of  her ,  feeling  a  familiar  clink  before  finishing  her  statement .          ‘  i  mean  ––  growing  up  with  eight  people  in  a  family  &  the  shit  i  went  through  really  made  me  immune  to  the  whole  aspect  of  change ,  i  guess .    ’     

she sat comfortably in her chair. her back rested against the back of the chair, and one foot pulled up onto the end of the chair so her knee was against her chest. it was an odd position, but it was one where she was comfortable. “it is pretty bad,” she sighed as she took a sip from her dark red wine. “some see it as a nice change of scenery,” adri paused for a moment, “i see it as abandoning our home. so what if it is seen as not safe? are we not the people who are supposed to make it safe?”
