His smile quickly became forced, turned to stone. Begrudgingly breaking eye contact with Kory as Margot took his shoes, his gaze followed her to the closet and back, setting his jaw and feeling those telltale veins in his face begin to p o p. âI do know her, sweetheart. Iâm sorry I forgot to tell you about darling little Maggie here. Isnât she a p e a c h?â He had been watching her over the other girlâs shoulder, only now turning his gaze back to Kory as he raised one hand to cup her cheek. âI didnât hire anyone else, youâre doing perfect.â
Finally unsticking his feet from the marble, he let his hand drop to encouragingly squeeze Koryâs as he strode over to Margot, smile becoming slightly manic. âNo lemons, kitten, but Iâm sure I can find something else. Youâll get something sour, I promise.â Leaning against the counter with a forced nonchalance, he stared down at her, fingers drumming on the cabinets. âShame on you for scaring the nanny like that.â Rolling his neck, bone by bone, Tommy shifted to look at Kory again. âSheâs my personal assistant. Sometimes she just forgets her place.â
Margot sent Kory a smirk. âSorry, I should have been more clear. I simply seem to be around so much, I almost get to thinking that sometimes ââ (( here, she shot a look to Tommy, that she hoped communicated all the thoughts of homicide she had floating through her mind )) ââ Iâm even  w e l c o m e . Silly me. I was just coming to pick up the eleven stolen engagement rings I stashed in your closet papers I left here last night.â She gave Tommy a knowing look before throwing a pitiful look at Kory. âLuckily, this wonderful nanny of yours found me and offered me a drink.â
Margot gave the fakest laugh she could muster, feeling for all her worth like a cast member of the Real Housewives of Gotham. âShe even tried to patch up my little wound,â she said, gesturing to her split lip and silently communicating to Tommy that he owed her. âI didnât have the heart to tell her that it was the, ahem, âmanâ of the house who was responsible for it in the first place.â
Okay, she was definitely pushing her limits now. âSo, I guess Iâll be off, unless you need me for anything, Mr. Elliot?â
Somehow, an odd feeling of ease and new rising suspicion came over her. She felt relief in knowing that they had some relationship, and an explainable one at that, but then she wondered why he seemed so angry, so tense. The girlâs voice was musical in an irritating way, even Kory could admit that, but she was just a child. His hand on her cheek should have been comforting, but she still felt too wired to fully take in his words. Instead, she nodded slowly before turning to look at the girl; M A G G I E.
                    âResponsible for your...âÂ
Heart clenching, head M I X E D up, fingers twitching at her sides ---------
All she wanted was to watch the twins, not get in the middle of his employee drama.
They didnât seem to like one another. She could feel it, or perhaps this was how they communicated. âI ---- â She what? She didnât like this? She didnât want to be in the middle of this? She didnât like how upset her boss looked as his hardened gaze stuck to the teenager with a smart mouth that even someone as forgiving as Kory was growing agitated by? âIâll get you a drink as well. I uhm, believe there may be lemon juice, Maggie, if youâd like some of that.â Kory was stalling, flustering around and she knew it very well.Â
It was still stuck in her mind that he was responsible for her lip, for her cheek, for her jaw? He was so sweet though. Her initial nerves and fear had subsided growing closer to him in the short time sheâd been watching his children. It was nearly impossible for her to imagine that he could do such a thing, so she ignored it. âI think we all need drinks. Mr. Elliot, remember those other drinks you were telling me about? Where are they?â
