Sooner rather than later Cassie would feel terrible formaking it seem like Gideon deserved to feel even an ounce of guilt for whatsheâd gone through. The Clave had done it to her and it was the Clave alonethat would eventually have to pay for it. Gideon had gone to try and stop theClave before they did more damage to the supernatural world and sheâdunderstood that. Maybe if she hadnât been so terrified of venturing into theoutside world after being turned she wouldâve gone with him. Apparently, sheâdbeen right all along to be afraid. Maybe the Clave wouldâve caught her muchsooner if sheâd dared to go out in the world sooner. Or maybe she wouldâve beenbetter prepared to defend herself. There was no way to know what couldâve been.
She crossed her arms over her chest, a small motion done toshield herself from the world around her. Her gaze tore away from Gideon and fellto the ground. It was too hard to hold his gaze when she saw the hurt in hiseyes. The hurt sheâd caused. âThereâs nothing that can change what happenednow.â Cassie could feel tears starting to form, an occurrence that had becomecommon, and she tried to hurriedly wipe them away before they spilled over. âTheycanât kill me so Iâm still alive.â Once she was sure she didnât have any tearstrailing down her face she looked up to finally meet his gaze again.
âAre you staying? Or are you just here to see how Iâm doingand then you need to go again?â Cassie sure she wanted to hear his answer. Notif Gideon needed to go again. It was selfish, but heâd left once and right now,if he left again, it would hurt even more.Â
At her words, Gid sighed and shoved his hands into the pocket of his jeans to keep from fidgeting as he stayed propped against the door frame. He knew Cassie was right, there wasnât anything he could change, but if he could take her pain upon himself, heâd do it without hesitation. He hated seeing her so hurt and as she tried to cover the tears that threatened to fall, he held his ground, not wanting to overstep, despite his urge to close the distance between them. âI know I canât change it but I wish there was more that I could do for you.â
He felt his chest tighten as she questioned him and knowing that she had to even ask him hurt. It made sense she would question whether he was here to stay or not though. He was the one whoâd followed Daraâs orders and left Hollow Grove, left Cassie. Heâd left the one thing that brought him any sort of true happiness in the world and sheâd suffered and he hadnât been here. Gideon wasnât sure heâd ever be able to forgive himself for leaving her, even though in his head, he knew it wasnât his fault, just as much as it wasnât Cassieâs fault.Â
âIâm here to stay. I told Dara to shove her missions up her ass. I needed to be home. I needed to be here...â He hesitated only briefly, his eyes taking in the sight of Cassieâs face as he spoke, taking in every feature heâd missed seeing. âI needed to be here with you.â
