“If you were born with the weakness to fall, you were born with the strength to rise.”
— Rupi Kaur, Milk and Honey
The melodious chantings of young girls filled Estrid’s tiny abode as she squeezed her eyes shut and slid into a trance. Everything around her melted into thin air, her body no longer touching the ground. Colorful sparks flashed before her eyes as she got caught between two worlds and the incantation came to an end. There was it again. The city engulfed by flames, homes burning to the ground, screams and cries pounding in her head. Everything they worked hard for turned into ashes. She could feel the flames licking her skin, but no scream could come out of her mouth. She was trapped. The city was trapped. There was no changing the future. A rap on the door interrupted her trance, and the woman heaved a sigh of relief as she woke up to the present. Although, grateful for being awakened from the nightmare, all the hairs on her arms stood on end and her heart beat like mad. There had to be a key to altering the future - that was her only hope. There was still time to locate the answer.
She smoothed out the wrinkles on her dress with her palm and sprang on her feet. “You can go,” her lips curved into a smile as she dismissed the girls. Then, she went to fetch her bejewelled staff - an important instrument for her job. “Come on in, ” her voice echoed.
The tension in their conversation changed when Estrid altered the conversation to something else. There was other things that Estrid has failed to inform her, and already she was in panic mode. Coming up to her feet now, she took a seat beside the seer as advised. Her watery blue eyes turned to her, looking straight through her. “It is bad news, isn’t it? I am doomed after all. I always thought so.”
The young woman racked her brain as to how to introduce the grim prophecy to Ingrid. She already looked devastated as it was, how could she trouble her more with the truth? Estrid wished that the prophecy would have remained a secret forever but it would be selfish of her to keep it from Ingrid since it was her own future as well. “You must not tell a soul,” her voice turned into a whisper. Estrid looked at her watery eyes, stared just a moment too long, trying to change her mind about sharing the truth. “It’s the fate of the village, Ingrid,” her voice was now just a mumble. “The village will end up in flames,” she swallowed and looked away, hiding her own tears this time.
my home will always be filled with flowers
Frayed leaves crunched and twigs snapped under the weigh of her boots as she ambled along the pathway that led into the depths of the woods. It was a starless and crispy night, only the moonlight providing the necessary light to discern her surroundings. She didn't mind the darkness, though. She found it peaceful and soothing after a long day. The forest was the only mother she had left, her sole sanctuary from the king and his servants.
As she continued her walk beneath the green hues, she heard the sound of someone else's footsteps. Her first instinct was take a step back and slide behind a tall tree. The last Volva died unexpectedly, what if it was her turn now? She had witnessed so much death in her lifetime that she expected hers to come anytime soon.
The footsteps seemed to approach her hiding place, each step deliberate and slow. Her heart was now beating in her ears, her hands clammy. Get yourself together, she told herself and showed herself to them once they were in close proximity.
"Hello?" It was more of a question than a greeting as she eyed them from head to toe. "I didn't expect to see you here," she forced a faint smile on her lips.
She was such a confusing creature, she seemed so uncertain of him. That on it’s own would be perfectly understandable, he was a strange man she had met on a road at night. When combined, however, with her vague description of her visions, her unusual offer, it was difficult to understand where he stood with her. He chose to take her cue, allow the conversation to move on from her powers, he knew now, could come to her later when he had questions he wanted answers. Perhaps even the face that he was now known by her would be enough to create a vision concerning him? He did not understand how these things worked. “I… I would not wish to inconvenience you.” He glanced down the path, aware of the long walk ahead of him, the ache in his legs and back from a long days work. “But I will not pretend I look forward to the thought of the rest of my journey however. Twenty years ago I would not even have blinked at the distance… times change I suppose.”
Her gaze settled towards him as he glanced down the long path. A chill surged through the back of her neck as her eyes lingered on his face. There was something peculiar about his aura she couldn’t quite understand. However, it was only a matter of time until he asked about what the future holds for him and help her understand him better. “You wouldn’t be an inconvenience. Trust me, I tend to provide people with shelter and food. It’s what the Gods would have wanted,” she said with a smile fixated on her visage. Truth be told, most of Estrid’s kindness stemmed from her religious beliefs as she was a devout woman. She believed that the Gods would look favourably upon her if they saw how kind and eager she was. Despite her goodwill, though, she never received an answer from the deities. Odin never visited her to ask about his future or seek for her advice like he did with the previous Volva. “My abode is over this way,” she extended her arm and pointed to their left side down a steep path. “Please follow me,” she began ambling towards that path. “Could you remind me of your name?” Estrid had seen wander about the village, but she could not quite recall his name.

“Rune was everything to me. Is.” She corrected herself, rubbing her eyes with her hand and wanting to burst in tears just thinking about him. “I’ve hurt the man that I have loved for over 10 years. To go with another in a matter of days. I don’t know if it was lust or love… Or influence from our last conversation together. Many years ago, before being Rune’s lover, I was Aesir,” Ingrid trailed off, about to tell a story. She only hoped that she cared to listen. No one besides her mother knows the real story. And everything after that. “We were teenagers, Aesir and I. He moved and I moved, and our passion for each other was so strong. We had vowed that we would spend our lives together. But we were so young and naive. So stupid. I saw him kiss another woman, I couldn’t stay to watch as it looked like it was leading to…” She couldn’t dare to finish. She knew exactly what they were about to do. He was going to give himself to her before she even had the chance. “Alas, I couldn’t bare to see or talk to him after that. All communication ended spontaneously. He went with her and I found myself in the arms of Rune shortly after. The rest is history now as you’re well aware.”
Ingrid lifted her head up again, sitting up but knees still deep in the ground. “I’ve dedicated my whole body and soul to Rune all these years. But I had always wondered what future I had with Aesir. And being with him now, I am so happy. By the Gods, so happy. But it is a different kind of love. It’s new, mysterious… Intoxicating. I find myself feeling selfish because I desire both of them. I know it is a need and not a want.”
Estrid bowed her head as the other woman explained her feelings for both men. She had no idea how to console her. Which words to choose in order to soothe her pain. "Ingrid," a brief pause before she continued, "You can't have them both," Estrid said firmly as she glanced up at her, the words feeling ruthless upon her tongue. "You made your choice," images of the disturbing vision flashed through her mind, a prophecy that plagued her slumber for months. Now, there was an immense weight on her chest. She could no longer keep the truth to herself. "Ingrid, there's something I need to tell you. Please have a seat."
Frayed leaves crunched and twigs snapped under the weigh of her boots as she ambled along the pathway that led into the depths of the woods. It was a starless and crispy night, only the moonlight providing the necessary light to discern her surroundings. She didn't mind the darkness, though. "Hello?" It was more of a question than a greeting as she eyed them from head to toe. "I didn't expect to see you here," she forced a faint smile on her lips.
It made him frown, that uncertainty in her voice. Surely she could not be surprised he would enquire after her wellbeing when she was alone on a path this late at night? He hoped most people would do the same.
“Visions?” Now that was interesting, she likely had more connection to the divine than he did now. More ability to understand how a mortal needed to navigate a world of Gods. “What visions were keeping you awake tonight?”
He had always been tall, so tall he needed to look down upon most people he came across. Big and strong and stripped of his power. “I stayed later in the village than I meant to, did not want to burden anyone by staying the night with them. I am making my way back to the farm.”
Her heart dropped to her stomach when she noticed the frown on his face. She probably had offended him with the tone of her voice. An apology almost slipped past her lips. She swallowed the words just in time. If she appeared to be apologetic, she would raise false suspicions. After all, she just went out for a walk, right? Just to inhale some fresh air. Or no? Frustration swelled in her chest as she caught herself lying to her own self. She wasn’t just outside for a walk. She was also searching for dark magic users. This was the hour they usually chose to practise their craft. “Yes, visions,” she answered his rhetorical question, biting her lower lip slightly. When he enquired what kind of visions, Estrid froze in place. Silence stretched between for a few moments. “Just some strange ones,” she blurted out. “Sometimes I have to decipher them and walking helps me to interpret them correctly,” a smile curved at the edge of her lips. “You can spend the night at my house, if you wish. It’s much closer than your farm,” she changed the subject. It wasn’t unusual for the Seer to host people at her house, not even men. Everyone knew that she did not have not even the slightest interest in love and that she was a virgin, and would probably remain one for the rest of the time.
👀 - what is Estrid's biggest dream for the future?
Estrid would like to be able to let people close to her again. She suffered too much loss and thus it's somehow hard for her to let people in. Sometimes she even dares imagine that she has a family of her own, something that she deems impossible because she never felt or romantic or sexual attraction towards anyone. Thanks for the question!
👀 does estrid know about Ingrid’s powers? (too lazy to switch accounts)
Estrid is not aware of Ingrid's powers. However, she senses that there are magic users in the village and that even some of them use dark magic, something that concerns her greatly. Thanks for the question!
Send my muse “👀 + a question” and they’ll have to answer with 100% honesty.
No deleting questions, either!

She really did put things into prospective. Never in her wildest dream did Ingrid imagine becoming Queen, let alone being in her fate. The question still stands, but how? The only way to bring down Ragnar was to kill him. Him and his army. Unless she gathered her own supporters. But that required being out there and speaking ill of him openly. Which will result her head cut off. “I love them,” Ingrid confessed, tipping down her head to prevent the seer from seeing her eyes water. “Loving them is my weakness. I know they will be my downfall. Aren’t were merely all mortals in the eyes of the Gods? Isn’t love our greatest weakness?”
Sympathy swelled in her chest as she listened to the woman's words. They were heavily laced with emotion and pain, touching the seer's heart. Estrid herself had never felt romantic love for someone. She had no clue as to how it felt to be in love. But seeing Ingrid's pain made her feel grateful for being spared of that emotion. Estrid dwelled in her own thoughts for a while. What if Ingrid was the downfall of the village? What if her choices led them to catastrophe? She had to be careful with her. Glancing over the other woman, the ever lovely and pleasing Ingrid, she contemplated what to say next. "Perhaps your love for him is greater than becoming a queen" the seer suggested.

She has done everything that Estrid advised her to do. And even by doing so, surprisingly, Ingrid felt extremely terrible. Gods knew how much she loved Rune, still do. Her heart aches for him, longed for him. And same for Aesir. However, Ingrid questioned the Gods, and questioned the seer themself. Ingrid immediately bowed her head once she walked in, showing her utmost submission. She even went down on her knees when Ingrid approached her, hands on the cold solid ground to kiss her feet. “Estrid,” Ingrid said, voice hitched. The dark-haired woman hesitated with her words, frightened to question the sightful seer that just a few months time told her future. “I don’t mean to question your vision. I must know that I am on the path to my future. The future of becoming Queen of Hedeby as my right, and being alongside Aesir as my future King. Please tell me… Was it all worth it? Am I happy?”
Her mouth curved into a smile as Ingrid went down on her knees to greet her. She was a woman who appreciated respect and she believed that she deserved every bit of it. “My dearest Ingrid,” she spoke softly as she placed a hand upon her head. “May Thor grant you courage and strength on your laborious way,” she enunciated and helped her back to her feet. “You chose the right path. My vision has not changed, which is a good sign,” she slightly squeezed her shoulder. “Divine forces want you to be the Queen. Not even Gods can intervene with fate,” she assured her, her face now dead serious. “Only you can change your fortune. Would give up your birthright for a mere mortal?” she squinted her eyes as she studied the other woman’s features for a sincere answer.

there were many times erik’s lifestyle lead to an unusual amount of being alone. if he was taking a job and out on the road more often than not he was by himself. or if he was staying in a town, he found it best to keep to himself. often times his strange hair and golden eyes kept people away, most believing he may be a monster himself. or touched by something evil.
the rare times he could actually enjoy himself around others was not something he could pass up.
sitting by the docks, various groups of men had spread out. all of them enjoying their fill of mead and other liquors. some exchanging stories, some playing games with dice. erik was happy to just sit in the company of others, laughing for a bit. his attention was drawn as someone new approached the group. “come to join us?” erik asked the newcomer who had wandered over towards his group. “or are you here to hire for a job?” the winter mercenary asked.
The red head was ambling by the docks, a beaker of wine in her hands as she looked out to the vast expanse of dark sea. What a sight to behold. Nothing could calm the soul like the sea and the seagulls that flew above it in blissful ignorance. The wind caressed her face as she listened to it blow through the trees, sweeping back her flaming locks. The golden drops of remaining sunlight was the only thing that warmed her exposed neck and her hands, other than that, even though she was dressed in fur from head to toe she could still taste the bitterness of the weather. “I am just seeking for a company,” she spoke in a soft tone and took a seat beside Erik. She couldn’t imagine why would she have a need of a mercenary. She had everything she could ask for, seeing to the fact that she was gifted with jewelry and expensive clothes for her services. Even now, for a simple walk down the docks, she was dressed to the nines.
