✘ ♕ ✘ It had been a couple of years since Ilya had officially joined the Boston team in the NHL. The first two years were fun, passing by in a blur of fame and upward movement. It was clear from the start that he was the best player on the team, and possibly the NHL as a whole. Even in his rookie year the media was starting to call the Russian phenom a generational talent. He reveled in it, but also pushed himself to work harder, and be even better.

This year the team welcomed two new rookies fresh out of college. They were the same age as Ilya (he was snatched up before college could even be part of the conversation). His spotlight dimmed slightly as now he had real competition for best player on the team, but rather than get angry or jealous, he thrived. Garrett pushed him in ways no other player had. The season had been a blast, if he was being honest.

Plus, the new rookies brought one of Ilya's new favorite humans to the team: Dean. He didn't play anymore, but the man was wild and always down for a good time. It didn't take long for the party boy American and the loud mouthed Russian to find each other and make fast friends. Hearing his name called, he turned away from a couple of girls he'd been chatting up, forgetting about them completely as his face lit up. "Yes, of course they were killer plays," his accented voice quipped back as he took the beer. After a deep drink, he met Dean's gaze with a playful look. "No one can keep up with me, but G is close. At least he does not miss passes like other people." The last two words were spoken loudly and directed at one of his other wingman, earning him a middle finger.

Dean doesn't waste any time tapping his glass against Ilya's in a silent toast before taking a large swig. This will be good for G, having someone to push him like this. Even as much as they all tried to keep up at Briar, it was clear that Garrett was in a league of his own. And it's clear now, even with this being their rookie year in the league, that Garrett Graham continues to be a force to be reckoned with. Ilya Rozanov may just be the thing to finally drag Garrett out of his father's shadow the way they always knew he could be. "I'll give you $100 if you out-score him this season." Dean grins as he takes another swig of his beer.

"But if you don't --- I've got a favor to ask," He wouldn't ask many in the league, mostly because he doesn't trust them within five feet of any of his girls, but also because the last thing he wants is for them to not take his ask seriously. But Rozanov, for all his reputation and asshole-remarks, strikes him as a genuinely good guy. "I started this coaching gig in New York, and there's some incredible talent." It's here that he pauses, expression growing just slightly more serious as he waits for any type of reaction that will prove him wrong about Ilya Rozanov. "They're great girls. But they could use some help with their backhand. I was gonna ask G, but uh, depends on who ends up being the number one scorer. I promised the ladies that much."

Granted, they spend most of their time making fun of him and a fraction of the rest of their time trying to pry him for details on Allie. But he'll take what he can get. Teenagers are a uniquely terrifying breed and, despite the fact that he'd never considered himself coach potential, he's starting to love every single second of it.

they're indescribable. for all intents and purposes they should have nothing to do with each other. they were once married and then divorced in what felt as if it were a matter of months. yet for some reason whenever he's in town, dana will still keep opening the door for him when he inexplicably shows up. to her daughters, he's an old family friend. they don't know just what connection their mother once had with him and while it's not necessarily a secret, it's not a fact she plans on revealing anytime soon. no one else here would get away with calling her sweetheart either. no one but him. looking up at him, she rolls her eyes slightly at his chiding response. "and i keep telling you to quit that job of yours." when he asks about her shift, it's not another chiding look that follows, but a sigh. one that is deep set and seems to come from the deepest parts of dana. "as soon as fucking possible." there's no fight to be had about her leaving soon tonight. it burns in her eyes. all of the emotions. the pain. the anguish. "the sooner i can clear up this fucking mess and make some semblance of a board then i'm done."

"i will when you do, baby." he teases, flashing her a smile that's sure to piss her off more. but the familiar banter serves to cover up the concern that he feels growing inside of him. dana evans does not stop working. hell, when she had the mis --- when they lost --- when it happened, she was back to classes the next day. she works through the pain. so the fact that even she's admitting that she wants out of her is enough to push him into action. "princess," he turns to address the other nurse, giving her a hard look and moving around the back of the nurses station counter to grab dana's keys. "fix the board. tell robby i'm taking her home." in a move that he's sure will fuel the other nurses' gossip for days to come, rourke grabs dana's sweatshirt off the back of her chair and takes his hand to rest at the small of her back. "i'm taking you home." his voice is low, and only for her, and it leaves no room for argument --- even if he knows she'll fight to make the room for it. "that husband of yours in town?"

" he's playing with fire , but that just so happens to be his favorite hobby . especially when that fire is rose's . emmett kicks his feet up as she works on the car in the garage , boots resting against the antique hood of some super rare and expensive model of a car that he can't remember . she'll probably remind him in a few minutes when she yells at him about it . " she's... " he tries to think of the right word to describe bella swan and can't quite come up with one . but she makes edward actually live , and that is enough for emmett to enjoy the human . " reckless . " he finally settles on , grinning as he looks over at his wife . " and dumb , but in a very human way . like when they eat spicy foods for no reason . for the first time in decades , he's out of uniform . instead , he looks every bit the tourist that he's always hated . cargo pants and thick soled boots . unbuttoned shirt over a plain tee . he's used to walking around towns like this and being respected , if not outright feared . granted , when trinity came rolling in they usually did so with the entire goddamn artillery . now , his gun is strapped discreetly to his ankle and his knife is tucked against his hip . they're doing this the right way . or so she insists . and evidently , the right way involves talking to locals and following clues on what seems like an endless chase to nothing . he's used to this being done for him . he shows up with the guns and the men and he takes by force . and lara croft chooses to move through everything with a pick and a fine tooth comb .

his jaw works around a piece of gum to suppress his agitation and the strong desire to whip out a gun . the woman he's been trying to get answers out of has been puttering on for ten minutes in italian as she gestures between him and the brunette waiting outside , studying her goddamn map . ' andiamo , signora . ' he snaps , rusty italian rolling off his tongue with a sharpened edge . the woman's gaze cuts to his and narrows and he exhales . he could threaten her . but that may just end up with him being slapped across the head and more italian swearing , and he's already nursing a headache from lack of sleep , lack of decent coffee , and croft's incessant self monologuing about these fucking catacombs . it takes another ten minutes , spirited arguing , a bribe , and a promise that if her neighbor continues to give her trouble , he can be mysteriously disappeared with no questions asked at rourke's hand and finally --- he has the key to the crypt lara's been chasing .

his jaw aches from how hard he chews on the nicotine gum . it's long since lost its edge and he exhales as he approaches croft , lifting an arm and easily dropping it over her shoulder to tug her in closer to his side . " a gift , for my much too young little wife . " he drawls with venom , glaring back at the woman from behind his sunglasses to where she humps , watching them . " judgmental pest of a woman . anyway thinking again about how dormé gets to see the padmé-anakin side of anakin, which is like the kinda dorky stumbling genuine guy and how she probably has SUCH fondness for him and for YEARS after they both die on mustafar she’s plagued with the images of him fighting hard for padmé and dying for her or holding her body and which one went first and she hopes they didn’t have to survive long without one another and she lost not just a sister but a brother that night — and then finding out the truth. and how much that would break her. because on one hand, there’s so much anger there. there’s so much denial. and then there would be so much more grief knowing that there’s the potential for a tiny sliver of anakin to still be alive who is probably dying of this guilt and yes, she wants revenge on the man who killer her sister, but that’s her brother. he’s family.

"Yeah, I saw. I'm sorry." Shane had spent an hour reading through comments on articles, annoyed. Rose is one of the best people he knows. The way the film industry treats her makes him feel nauseous and filled with this protective desire to wrap her away from the world. She deserves better.

"You don't owe me anything, Rose." He truly means the words. She has been an anchor for him throughout everything. The person who helped him navigate his sexuality and his relationship with Ilya. He'd read an article recently about platonic soulmates, and he genuinely thinks Rose is his. "I'm looking forward to it. And if anyone says anything to you -" Shane pauses, clicking his teeth. "Well, I won't say anything, but I'll send my angry Russian husband after them." He grins, trying his best to make her smile. "Maybe I could take you for dinner afterwards? To celebrate?"

Rose chokes out a laugh and it's a testament to how rough the past few days have been that it's the most genuine one she's managed since the internet just...exploded. It's amazing, really, all it takes for her career and her image to be rocked is one jackass calling her difficult. "I think we should save the angry Russian husband for when we really need him." Which is, if Rose ever wants to attempt career suicide. Ilya is terrifying on the ice, but on social media he's vicious. And as funny as it is, Rose is still trying to claw back whatever semblance of a squeaky clean image she can.

"I think I'd like that." It feels like forever since they've been able to hang out. Even longer since they've been able to hang out and catch up when one of them isn't dealing with some kind of PR crisis and internet storm of opinions. She misses him. "Maybe uh, maybe this summer I could come hang in Ottawa for a bit? I think I need a break from...this."

✘ ♕ ✘ He was being a complete ass and he knew it. This meeting was important to the man Ilya loved more than anyone else in the world. Rose was Shane's best friend and he had promised his boyfriend that he'd give her a chance, but he seemed to be doing everything but. Ilya had been extremely perceptive since he was a little kid, but it seemed that Shane was always his blind spot. It wouldn't even take someone with high perception to see all the reasons why Ilya's defenses were completely unwarranted now.

Used to instigating fights on and off the ice, the Russian waited for Rose to lose her patience with him and throw back some irritated quip or tell him to shove it. Instead, she seemed remarkably cool about it. Her words were direct, but not biting. Her eyes held a sincerity that cut deep, making his heart skip when she plainly stated how in love with him Shane was. In the end, it was the teasing humor that finally made Ilya Rozanov crack and lower those defenses. He smirked and shook his head, taking a deeper sip of his drink.

"Only two," he answered, knowing the honest answer would be the most ridiculous one to break the tension. With a sigh, Ilya leaned back against the booth, resting one arm along the top of it, appearing far more at ease now. "Everything in my life is competition," he admitted to her. "Always has been. And you... Rose Landry, was maybe, probably, the biggest competition I ever had." He gave another half shrug. "But I love him. More than anything. And he seems to really like you so... Maybe I will do you favor and tell you that this vodka?" He raised his glass with a little shake. "Is shit. Not worth what you paid." He winked at Rose, letting her know that this was his white flag.

"That's sad," Her posture all but matches his as she leans back into the booth, letting herself exhale just the smallest breath of relief that she seems to have passed his test. "Because we were really incompatible." Even if Shane had been remotely into women, he was still Shane. And life with Rose, well, it involved a lot of media. A lot of attention and speculation and red carpets --- not a whole lot of ice time.

The mention of the vodka makes her jaw drop and she immediately grabs the bottle and brings it closer to study the label. The entirely Russian label, which means she understands nothing about it. "You're kidding, right?" He has to be, because she paid...well, she doesn't even want to admit how much she paid for this. But the guy said that it was the best. Very authentic. "I knew that asshole was scamming me," But he had the whole...giant, muscly, thick accented with a thicker mustache thing. He couldn't have been more Russian if he'd come with a pet bear. And... maybe that was entirely the point. "Well, it's still the thought that counts."

Setting the bottle back on the table, Rose allows herself a brief second to glower at it before she flicks her gaze back to Ilya. They're not friends now, and she wouldn't dare make that assumption prematurely. But he doesn't seem to want to completely hate her anymore. "Can I ask you a question? A personal one?" Because she's been dying to know and god knows Shane would rather fake his own death than talk about any of this with her. "How long were you two hooking up before he realized that he was gay? Because when we...well, I feel like I kinda...had to...tell him? In a way? And I got the impression that things between you guys weren't exactly new."
