i respect people who want to keep their menstruation to themselves but i have to make it everyone's problem. Literally if it was socially acceptable to lead every conversation with "I'm menstruating" i would.

since tumblr is removing icons on the side of posts on the dashboard i think they should also remove them inside the posts
and then they should change the way the reblogs look so that each addition is below and on the left of the previous one so that it makes a sort of stairs shape
maybe they could even underline every username!
oh and they should also add vertical lines for every reblog, i think it would look cool
and if there's a ton of reblogged additions they should make the first few ones all squished and stuff to the point where every letter has it's own line and you're just reading words vertically
Shared in a public post on FB three years ago, my FB memories just brought this up;
This guy was 67 years old when he started his transition. On the right he is pictured 3 years on T and just recently after his top surgery, so about 70 years old.
It is never, ever, too late for you. I suspect that's why he shared it the way he did, to show others not to be afraid, if he can do it as a senior citizen it's okay if you can't do it as a teen. Live. Survive. And whenever you're ready, chase your happiness. You deserve it.
When I think about American attitudes to parenting there's something that always comes to mind, but I don't know whether it's a real thing. All my life in American films and TV I've heard child characters addressing their dads as "sir" or being told off for not doing so.
Is that really a commonplace thing in American families, or is it just a shorthand way of showing that the character is a shitty dad?
calling dads sir, in the US
It's real and I've seen it first hand
I it's how I was raised
shitty-dad shorthand
it's real outside the US

It is incredibly regional/cultural.
The one time I tried calling my mom 'ma'am' (because that's what kids did on tv and in books and autistic me decided this was another social cue I had missed), I got in MORE trouble because she thought I was mocking her.
But as an adult I've known several parents who insisted on being 'sir'd' and 'ma'am'ed. Most lived in or were culturally from the south.
I am a southerner. Yes I did use sir and ma'am with my parents some. I stopped doing it by the time I was in my teens and no one complained. I restarted when I started taking karate and just about worshiped my sensei, who felt like we should those terms with our parents. Yes, he was Okinawan.
My parents were mostly amused at the change.
I didn't sir/ma'am my parents, but I was friends with kids that did - and it was a respect that wasn't earned but demanded.
Very regional. It can be shorthand for a ego do as I say parent, typically one that runs a family like a military unit, or just normal regional respect. I live on the border of Northern and Southern cultures. The people raised with Southern manners will say yes sir and yes ma'am and call adults Mr/Ms First name. Persons with Northern manners do not do that. Southern manners are more friendly on the surface than Northern manners but come with some formality.
The USA is huge and each state and region is different. It's hard to tell if you aren't aware of these things.
my brother had a brilliant idea that i wanted to share with other people who have four-legged family members: he trained our two cats to go directly to the door when they hear the fire alarm.
obviously at first the fire alarm sent them scrambling for cover, but he started slowly by giving them treats whenever it went off, when someone burned food or forgot to open the fireplace flu. he then progressed to calling them to the door to offer treats immediately after the alarm went off. and it actually wasn't too long before the cats voluntarily started going to the door upon hearing the alarm.
i think this was genius because in the event of a real emergency we know exactly where the cats will be and we will not have to waste precious time trying to find them to rescue them. i think this method would work equally well with dogs and probably other free-roaming pets such as rabbits, ferrets, etc. and i certainly encourage others to give it a shot!
I trained Neelix to alert me to Sounds. So in the even of A Sound he'd find me to let me know about it. Oven timers, knocking at the door, weird creature stuck in the yard, etc. This has the added effect of being able to scoop him up and bring him to safety in the event said sound is a fire alarm or a tornado siren.
The downside is, when I had a baby, every time it cried he'd barrel into the room to let me know. Even if I was already in the room. And if I couldn't make The Sound stop (because an infant works differently than an oven timer), he'd start biting me urgently. 😅
Confused, but doing his best:
Oh, context is that I'm deaf not that I wanted to create a beast that'd harass me over sounds.
“how’s the writing going?” i’m glad you asked! my room has never been cleaner and i’ve decided to take up baking
“how’s the cleaning going?” thanks for checking in! I’ve written four chapters :)
there is a very real tendency of teenagers with anxiety disorders self diagnosing with considerably more stigmatized and impairing mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia, DID, personality disorders), but the best response to that isn't to get angry with them for "appropriating" lol. instead you show them coping resources for the problems they're actually having and deemphasize diagnostic categories in general. if an 18 year old is claiming to have alzheimer's, they're probably making an innocent mistake and are in genuine distress. be kind.
Also I think this trend comes, at least in part, from how brushed aside anxiety disorders can be. If your parents and teachers dismiss you with 'oh everyone feels anxious', then inevitably you're going to start thinking that there must be something else going on with you
”You must feel very scared right now; let’s talk about how to help you personally, tailored to your symptoms” will always be more helpful than “stop faking (X) for attention”. If theyre that desperate for attention or an explanation, something is wrong.
And like, at least some of them are probably right. Yeah these disorders are less common than things like anxiety disorders, but they are more common than you think they are. Like, they probably shouldn't self diagnose without doing a reasonable amount of research and talking to a professional if possible, but not every single one of them is wrong, and being wrong about something is not the same thing as lying about having something you don't. Be nice to teenagers they're still learning
Gets to be rather disconcerting to hear people discussing red flags, all the time. So, here are some green flags to consider.
I can’t tell if this aged like wine or like milk.

I went on snopes and like, yeah no this was genuinely published in 1997, somehow
YEAH ITS REAL. i own the issue with this comic.
One time I heard a dude online compare new and obscure LGBT terminology to newspeak. This I think is one of the biggest examples I have seen of people with their whole chest ignoring the basic themes of 1984.
In 1984 the whole point of newspeak was that it shrinks. Ideas that could once be communicated now cannot. Everything is simplified as much as possible. You cannot explain complicated ideas of freedom or equality because the words no longer exist, or they don’t mean what they once did.
More specifically, there is canonically no word for “gay” in 1984. There are only two words for the entire spectrum of sexuality. “goodsex” and “sexcrime”. If you’re gay it’s the exact same as being a pedophile. And those are is the exact same as cheating on your wife, which is the exact same daring to fuck your wife just because you feel like it. Which is no different than literally any sex act that might offend big brother.
Do you see what’s happening? In 1984 can no longer ask your wife to peg you or something because the word for pegging is the exact same word for pedophile. And you can’t come out as gay because all you can say is that you did a criminal sex act, which means you cannot make a case for your rights either.
Inventing made up words to describe obscure things that previously lacked words would literally be a perfect remedy to newspeak. This language would counter every barrier to communicating the necessary concepts. Because it’s what literally every normal non-dystopian language does.
Keep this in mind especially in regards to what's happening in Florida right now. They associate LGBT+ content with grooming, define it as pedophilia or child abuse or sexual crimes or etc. Then they pass laws calling for sex offenders to be executed. Bigots or morons claim "Oh, why are you against these anti-child abuse laws?!" Because the state is trying to redefine LGBT+ activity and individuals as being the same as child abuse. For all the bluster and anger over "Grrr, words don't mean anything anymore! These terms I grew up with don't matter anymore!" the truth is THEY are the ones trying to limits what words mean because they want to associate certain groups of people with evil people to make more innocent/ignorant individuals be okay with hurting those groups of people.
i feel like im in the sims where it takes 5 hours to make pasta and then u have to immediately go to bed
I think an under-discussed component of "Twink Death" is that whatever allowance we are awarded to express femininity and androgyny is tied to youth. It can be charming in a "boyish" way, but it's a phase we're supposed to grow out of when we reach a certain age and revert to the generic category of men. Are many afraid to age because we live in a youth-obsessed culture and want to remain fuckable? Well yes, but I see a real fear that suddenly our gender expression will be seen as embarrassing or perverted. It's also of course fucked up that gender expression should be tied to body type to begin with!
Anyway let's talk solutions. Obsessing over the word "Twink" is a symptom of people's only exposure to gay culture being porn and Grindr. Offline, the word you're looking for is QUEEN. The term doesn't depend on age, body type or race. It's sometimes honorific, sometimes bitchy, always from the heart. We all need to get offline and meet role models who prove we have long, flamboyant gay lives ahead of us. Queens with robust social and sex lives, fat queens, balding queens, queens with thick regional accents, Black queens and fems to whom we owe the world, all of them. Feminine gays who are afraid to age: your femininity will not wither away but ferment and flourish into something powerful and inspiring. Live in defiance of a culture that says femininity has an expiration date. Who cares about being a twink? Be a queen.
you've gotta have friends who are older than you, not because you're a dumb kid, but because you'll be terrified of growing up otherwise
being the oldest person you allow yourself to know will eat holes in your brain and you'll start saying weird stuff
I can’t say enough how good this advice is.
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba
Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)
I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head
