A Nipping Cold

Hiya! I'm Jack "Overland" Frost and I'm the one that brings in the flurries and gets you the snow days, winter or near spring time. Don't be too shy to talk to me! I nip, not bite.

It’s definitely nice to be back! Seems like I overdid the snow and low temperatures a bit. My own mun had a bit of trouble with that traveling cold, flu, bronchitis—pneumonia thing. They’re good to go now though!

He smirked. “My muns been worried sick about churs…but I share her worry…” he said as he painted an egg, it trying to wiggle from his grasp.

“But it’s good to see you back…really is Frostbite.”

"That egg wants down, Bun Bun." Blue eyes turned to look at the wriggling creature first before he eased closer to Bunnymund in tiny light steps, feet barely making a sound on the floor. He grinned. "Besides, you still got a few months until Easter. Play a little!"

Finally…he’d reached the point in the cave were Jack was in plain view. “No. It doesn’t.” he said slowly approaching the boy. “Come home with me. I have something important to talk about with you…” he said, closing in on Jack.

Jack kept his head down, white locks lacking their usual glimmer. In fact, the boy looked less like snow and porcelain and more like frosted ice and rough alabaster. He barely glanced up at Bunnymund, refusing to look at him when he was about to be told that everything was ending.

That it was over. 

“Why? Why can’t it be here?”

He sighed. “Because this is…depressing…but fine.” he placed his hands on his hips, shivering sligthly. “Cupid it over holo-globe and she wants to talk to us about…the you know what…” he kneeld down to the boys face. “If you still want to do it that is…” then Bunnymund blinked, looking at the boys face. “Mate are you okay…?” he reached a paw to the boys face.

The touch has a shudder go through his body, making the boy tremble almost immediately when warm fur touches his face. Finally, he glanced up at Bunny and there is speckles of black against his usually clear light blue eyes. He parts his lips to say something but all that comes out is a wordless gasp before Jack's eyes are rolling upwards and he's slumping bonelessly against the pooka, unconscious. 

There was fear and darkness in everyone and the worst part is that no one is ever quite safe from their own doubts and worries. Weary, heartbroken from things that he had come to believe to be so true that it's reality rather than just a jab at him from a stranger, Jack had allowed a bit of his own internal nightmare to swallow him from the inside.

“No.” The words came out regardless of how much he would rather keep quiet and say nothing. Jack blinked tiredly out at the little ray of light at the end of his cave. He shivered and then took in a shuddering breath, speaking louder. His words would echo and the pooka would hear them without needing Jack there to hear.

“No.” He repeated. The wind seemed to shudder beside him, filling the cave with the sound of a crying howl. “I don’t want to talk about anything.”

“And I don’t want to talk about how you just want this to end. Go away.” The spirit sounded more tired and more defeated than he was angry. Perhaps that was because that is how he feels.

Like he had already lost the war before he had even began fighting it.

End? Bunny, despite the harsh wind wanting to drive him away, he pressed forward. “End wot? Jack come back to my Warren with me. This is no place for you to stay…” his words were soft yet loud, as though to let the boy hear him over the roar of the wind.

“It fits me better, doesn’t it?” His voice sounded broken to his own ears, the words crackling in the wind like ice about to break from an unknown weight on them. At least here in this cave it was cold and quiet. It was empty and without anything that reminded him of a warmth that he couldn’t have for three hundred years.

It didn’t have anything to remind him of the warmth that he still couldn’t apparently have now.

Pitch’s hate flowed in an easy stream, and his hateful eyes were asphyxiating, ready to rub out that last light that lay inside Jack’s now frail body. Every shuddering gasp or struggling exhale made the elation he felt spike. Not a thing could hold a candle to this sort of thrill.

The release of pent-up anger was quite an unbelievable sensation. And this one was perceived so much more dramatically, and clear after the curtain call of Pitch’s destruction. This was the grandiose decrescendo that he deserved, the climax was him being dragged by his own fears back to his hideout, back to be weakened and alone, back to his own devices. And now, the final end he wanted to tie down was being knotted forever.

He could feel the heaving breaths that Jack took, trying to resist the coming darkness that enveloped him like an illness. Loneliness took it’s toll. Empathy seemed to have departed the port a long while ago.

He didn’t want to feel sorry for Jack anymore, he didn’t want to feel like he needed a partner in crime. Now those things hung like a dead weight. The atramentous dark spilled over him, much like ink, devouring his lower back. Now, the pique was finally in sight. The obliteration of this thing he felt for. The last human element to his plight of darkness, that singular thing that he never needed. At this point, he was glad that Jack rejected him. He leaned into the boy’s face, that same teasing smirk filling his features. 

“Be alone,”

The Pooka huffed, still not finding the boy. Where could he have ran off to? “Jack…Frostbite…” Bunnymund looked around. “I wanted to tell you something…important. Can you…can you come out?” he pleaded with the air, hoping Jack would hear him.

The hands covering his ears weren’t helping and there was nothing Jack could do to drown out the voices and the pleads from Bunnymund. Was the pooka here to say that it had been a lie and that he wanted out? 

No.

No. Jack refused. If it was going to be that way, at least give him some time to accept it and drown his sorrows in iced water. 

‘All I wanted was someone to love. That’s all I wanted.’ The snow thickened and slowly ice pierced upwards in the form of upside down icicles, sharp and unyielding to those who wish to speak to the boy. Any visitor was going to have to cut them down first to find him inside his self made cocoon.

One step and Bunnymund noticed the ice. The snow. It was…frighten almost. He then saw a cave. Maybe…slowly he approched the entrance to the cave. “Jack…” he called out into the dark, shallow cave. “Jack please come out…I know you’re in here…” he took another step into the cave. “It’s about us. And I’d really like to discuss it now.”

Bunnymund looked around, not finding the boy. "Jack..." he called out softly as he pushed himself around a tree. "Where are you...?"

He would usually be out and about, demanding an affectionate hug or two from the pooka by now but the thoughts would not leave him alone. The boy stayed curled up against the shadows, despite the fact that they haunted him just as terribly as the thoughts whispering to him about his stupidity and his naively placed hope for something good. 

Three hundred years and he had been the only one that ached for someone to hold close, to talk to--to feel. Three hundred years and some odd days after the battle and he had thought he had gotten what he had always wanted and wished upon.

He had thought the moon had finally heard his prayers and had finally given him something to call his own and to call dear to him. 

But what if he was wrong? What if he had only imagined everything and had only listened to what he wanted to hear? Maybe it wasn't even a trick--maybe it was pity. 

Jack pressed even closer to the wall, tears gathering into little droplets at the corner of his eyes as he clenched them closed and covered his ears in hope of quieting the words--whether it was Bunny's or his own that he wanted to quiet, the spirit did not know.
