why you shouldn't make a new year's resolution
I didn't make any New Year's Resolutions this year.
Here's why: every January, people make these outlandish promises to themselves. They tell themselves that they will lose a ton of weight, exercise every day without fail, save a small fortune, find a boyfriend who is as nice as he is attractive (which should be easy once you get really skinny--see resolution #1), create a rubber band ball that will land them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records--the list goes on.
Then, one night in mid-January, these people find themselves curled up in the fetal position on their bedroom floors, alternating between spoonfuls of extra-crunchy peanut butter and brownie batter. They overdrafted their checking account when they bought those fancy new running sneakers. The ones that are still in the box. It probably doesn't need to be said...but there is no hot, friendly boyfriend in sight.
"Where the hell am I going to get the money for all those goddamned rubber bands!?" these people will scream out into the night before crumbling into peanut butter/brownie batter sobs.
Uhh...is this just me? Orrr... Well whatever. New Year's Resolutions are the worst.
Of course, this isn't to say that the New Year isn't a good opportunity to set some new, positive intentions for yourself. The problem with a "resolution" is that once a person "fails" to meet the parameters of the resolution, they tend to give up entirely. You can't fail with an intention. For example, the resolution to never eat junk food again becomes the intention to make food choices that make your body feel healthy and happy. The resolution to eliminate stress becomes the intention to not let little things throw you off balance. The resolution to practice yoga every day becomes the intention to deepen your practice and listen more closely to your body.
Like many yogis, I like to set a new intention at the start of every yoga practice. While the New Year provides us with a metaphorical clean slate and the unique opportunity to set fresh goals, it's important to remember that your intentions are fluid and can change according to what your body and soul needs. Sometimes your body and soul need you to eat peanut butter straight from the jar with a spoon. Sometimes.
(Just don't do the brownie batter thing. That shit will give you salmonella.)

"yoga is hot" or... "my own butt"
I am both a yoga practitioner and a writer. And let me tell you, I have been waiting YEARS for the opportunity to write a piece about my own butt. (That's my butt. I don't care what you say.) There just never seemed to be an appropriate context for such a subject. Until, I think, right now.
My story starts one spring evening in Vermont. I was walking through the tiny town of Burlington to attend a yoga class at Yoga Vermont. I had my mat in hand, my chakras were more or less aligned, and I was confident that the crisp, spring air would make my Ujjayi breath all the more ocean-y. My calm was interrupted, however, when a young man yelled out to me from a moving car.
"Yoga is hot!" he called out into the night, like some sort of aggressive mantra.
Unfortunately, he sped away before I had time to really delve into the details of his statement, let alone agree with him. Regardless, his simple words held a simple truth.
Yoga is hot.
When people are asked why they practice yoga, their answers can vary greatly: peace of mind, increased flexibility, balance, etc. Most people don't say that they practice yoga in order to achieve a greater level of hotness. (Well, unless you're Adam Levine. Oh hayyyyy.) Adam Levine aside, there are few yogis who would deny that one of the nicer side effects of regular practice is a nicely toned bod. Which brings us to the real topic of this post: my butt. Okay, fine. Maybe this post isn't about my butt, exclusively--but yoga butts in general. Like it or not, the idea of a "yoga butt" has become something of a pop culture phenomenon. There are entire (kind of sexist and gross) websites dedicated to these butts. I would argue that the obsession with yoga butts is a little...much. Hey, even the ever-hot Adam Levine admits that while he started practicing yoga for physical benefits, emotional and internal benefits became equally important to his practice. Here is a quote from a recent Yoga Journal interview:
"I won't lie: At the beginning, it was 100 percent physical for me. I had lactic acid from working out. I couldn't touch my toes. People who say that they don't do yoga for the physical benefits are full of it. It makes you look great, which is cool, but it also makes you feel great. Both are awesome. It puts me in a completely different place mentally now. The practice slows me down. I have to focus so intently, I'm not thinking about anything else. My mind is free of the typical thoughts. Yoga really revolutionized my life." - Levine The truth is, while that "Yoga is hot!" kid in the car may have been on to something, we yogis are probably better served focusing on our breath rather than our butts. So the next time you find yourself stressing about whether your behind looks okay in your yoga pants, remember this: it probably looks awesome. Fuggettaboutit!
A toned bum is something that is going to happen naturally from practicing yoga. HOWEVER, if you want to focus your practice on toning your glutes, take a look at this 12-step sequence. You'll have a butt just like mine in no time.

Hey cuties, booties, and yogis, My name is Lea and I have created this blog exclusively for your reading pleasure. Need specifics? Sure thing. I aim to please you, dear reader, by way of the following: 1. In one short month, I will be beginning my 200 hour yoga teacher training. This fact fills me with joy, excitement, and even a little bit of nervousness. I feel a lot like this, actually (last 10 seconds only). I hope that this blog can be a resource for other yoga students--those who are going through teacher training, those who are considering it for the future, and those who are just kinda sorta curious about it.
2. I am currently based out of Boston and I plan to cater to the specific and extra-special needs of Boston yogis. What are the best studios near Harvard Square/Back Bay/South End/etc/etc? Which Bikram studio is the hottest? Which smells the least sweaty? (probably not the same studio--just guessing). What places in Boston offer teacher training? Where can you buy organic, local kombucha? What workshops are going on this week? You get the picture.
*#1 and #2 cover the main points of the blog...but if neither of those things strike your fancy, don't worry. There is much, much more, including:
2. expertly photoshopped images of cats doing yoga
3. inspirational quotes that will inspire you
4. delicious healthy (and maybe some not-so-healthy) recipes and photos
5. expertly photoshopped images of dogs doing yoga Well. Hope you're excited as I am.
Finally. A good pic of me doing yoga.
