chasen wasn’t exactly sure what time it was, but he new it was late…or early, technically. he closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against the wall, “yeah. i’m fine.” he could barely feel the throbbing in his hand and the stinging in his split lip. really, he couldn’t feel anything at all anymore, but that was nothing new. anger was the only sensation he could rely on: anger and the pain of broken fingers. “sorry…i know it’s late, and the last time we talked….” chase licked his bottom lip and wrinkled his nose as the taste of copper invaded his mouth. “i didn’t know who else to call.”
clem didn’t know if she believed him, and if he wanted his freedom she could make him talk and be honest with her for a change, but that felt moot in the moment. it felt stupid for that to be the thing to pick an argument over. “i already told you i’d patch you up even if you dropped by my place at 2 in the morning.” she didn’t really feel like getting into their last conversation; clem was still half asleep and her emotions were still raw. the question of being good enough lingered in her head, in the places she’d been pushing it to the corner for later conversation - always later and not present. clem had already asked chasen and she didn’t get his answer - or his half an answer, so it felt unresolved. still misunderstood. she wasn’t going to pretend like she did’t know about his argument with daisy, so she only fidgeted on the line as she stood at the curb, hailing the first cab to pass by. “i’ll grab your checkbook then jet over, okay?” if they were going to hash out feelings it should maybe not be at this moment, or maybe not tonight at all.

there was a different ambience in the law department, one that made her feel uncomfortable unless she dressed like a character from suits. although the art department wasn’t lax, they were slightly less serious, probably due to the nature of their work not involving legal cases and sometimes court. regardless, it was still part of masters so naomi wasn’t intimidated, just a bit uneasy to walk around after getting only two hours of sleep the night before. “at least you’re finished. on to the next boring case, right?” she offered, searching the basket until she found a light roast, remembering that they had the highest caffeine content. “there is one close to my apartment, but it’s the matter of actually having the time to get there, you know?” she said, thinking fondly of a place she had visited with athena. “would you go if i booked something?” naomi asked, “i would probably be more likely to actually go if someone held me accountable for it.”
“oh to the next one, yeah. and then the next, and the next...” talk about monotonous. but her job had already been that way, so she didn’t know why she was complaining. clem hummed, knowing exactly what naomi was talking about. there was a whole lot of fun stuff to do around where she lived but she hardly had the free time to do it. if she did go do something it was usually out on the town and with people who didn’t necessarily hold the same interests, so. “that’s a whole mood.” she was dying to go back into the seamstress shop she loved visiting but every time she got off work they were already closed. she blinked owlishly at the open invitation, plugging naomi’s pod into the machine and setting her favorite mug underneath the drip. “honestly? i need that so badly i’d let jude drown for a day to go.” although if it weren’t on a workday that’d probably be better. but still, she meant it.

sebastian sat on his favorite chair in baby’s entire penthouse. he moved it every time he came over so that he could admire the spectacular view that surrounded just about the entirety of the girl’s penthouse. sebastian sucked his teeth as baby groaned, “baby cariño, when are you going to learn that anything other than a dry red is a headache in the morning?” he said raising his glass to her as he proceeded to throw it back like a newbie at a frat. “while you’re over there pouting, check my briefcase cry baby.” he stuck his tongue out at her playfully.
“that’s nothing some pain killers can’t fix. i like ‘em sugary.” she drank enough wine coolers to know when the sugar was too much, but sebastian was acting like a grandpa, as usual. baby stood from the piano bench, giving a gloriously fake sigh as she sauntered her way over to his briefcase. “why? are you going to give me free money? more wine? a mint?” she would steal a piece of gum if he had gum, regardless of the fact that she had some in her own purse that was on the rack. she stuck her tongue out as she pried it open and peaked inside.

“really? like, the ones that keep it juiced up? i mean, only if you’re not using it. i have an iphone xr,” she said, partly shocked but mostly excited that someone she grew up watching was so generous. of course, she didn’t actually know baby, but mardra felt like she at least knew part of her, even if it was only the part she was forced to play. “wow, that’s really awesome. i, uh, i grew up watching you and your brother. but i bet you get that thirty times a day, honestly.” she said, her words strung together a bit at the end, slightly embarrassed for what she had said. “i work in the music department, so if you ever want to branch out, i can help. i mean – i’m just an intern right now but hopefully i’ll get a full time position soon.”
“yeah! those ones. i’ll have my assistant bring one for you and leave it in your mailbox or something?” she suggested, phone already out and texting said personal assistant about it so that that was one less thing she had to remember to do. remembering to do stuff was her assistant's job, anyway. she flushed at the mention of her childhood career - even if she heard it all the time it still felt novel. it still felt like something she was always surprised about it. “really? haha it must be weird seeing me in person, then. when i met john stamos for the first time in person i think i might’ve peed a little bit.” but he was john stamos, so that made sense. it always felt different when it was someone doing it to her. “that’s super cool! good luck on getting a full position, then! i’m working on a kids’ television pilot right now so music might get involved but-. we’ll see.” she laughed a little at the thought of sitting in a booth and having to sing something like babyshark for hours.

𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐓 𝐇𝐄𝐑, and then the ugly dog, unamused. “ he should be insecure about it, ” he mumbled, watching the dog pad around the office. maybe if sticks had grown up with pets he’d be more used to animals. and of course, it’d help more if baby hadn’t gotten the most ugliest, stupidest looking dog he’d ever seen. “ the dog is the main character ? ” he repeated, confused. “ how’s america’s audiences supposed to root for him when he looks like that ? ” and how was a dog a main character, what ? he shook his head; he didn’t understand baby’s world – he just had to protect it. and speaking of, “ i’m only getting paid to make sure you don’t get mobbed, ” he told her, “ not this dog. so don’t expect me to look out for it when it’s around you. ”
baby frowned. “that’s so rude. you’re lucky dogs are empty-headed or else i’d really be mad at you.” she reached down to pet the dog and console him, telling him that she didn’t find him ugly and that he was perfect just the way he was. “it’s a kid’s show, i don’t know if they’re going to be that concerned about how he looks on-screen so much as how much he’ll be there.” which was going to be a lot, assuming the show got picked up after the pilot. she sighed, taking the leash and beginning to make her way towards the next office she had to visit while here, the dog trotting beside her snorting away happily. “no one knows i’ve moved to new york, yet. the most you’ll have to do is pretend i don’t want to sign an autograph here and there.” and if people were doing that in the office it was probably for their children, so baby wasn’t too weirded out. “i didn’t know you had such an aversion to dogs. if i would’ve known i would’ve gotten one sooner.” she didn’t want to purposely annoy him, not for real, anyway. he was still in charge of her safety, even if she didn’t feel unsafe here.
blvercmance:
his face made her laugh, holding her hand up to cover the soft giggle. “you could live with that? really? where’s your professionalism? your love of the craft?” she teased, shoving her hands in her jacket pockets. “so are we almost done? because that pizza is absolutely calling our names.” she looked around, and she thought, they were done, right? things were all put away, and she was pretty sure they didn’t have to actually lock up. mostly, she just wanted her day to be over so she could do whatever she wanted.
“look. i do love my craft. it’s great. better than great. what i don’t love is listening to execs or assholes trying to tell me how to do my job when they don’t know shit. don’t they know my degree isn’t for nothing?” he didn’t care about them and they didn’t care about him either - he still delivered, despite them thinking they know anything and everything there was to know. but that’s because eli was good at filling in their cracks. it was fine. everything was fine. “let’s fucking go. if they wanna be mad later they can take it out on everyone else.” he slung his bag over his shoulder and made his way towards the door, tugging it open and waiting for lindsey to exit before following after her, turning off the switch and locking the door behind them. “i can hear it in the distance. it’s begging to be eaten.”

it seemed like every other weekend naomi was traveling, but she never actually minded it. her weeks were spent either coming back to the city, editing what she had shot, or finding new locations. either way, it felt somewhat rare for her to see coworkers, that is until elijah stood in her doorway. looking up from her computer, she leaned forward on her elbows, “ tell me about it, and summer shots of tropical places get boring. how many more things to i have to photograph that look like they could be a default windows background ? ” she said with a similar level of annoyance, although there was still a jovial tone in her words.
"well, when you’re good at something people will run you into the ground doing it until you hate it.” which is why he was glad he was just a house videographer, sometimes. it meant he got to do a whole bunch of things while still behind the camera. “to be fair, if i walked by a bunch of computers and work i did was displayed on every single one of them i might take bragging rights for the rest of my life. milk it.” he’d definitely be a little shit about it, so he wouldn’t blame naomi if she did take the bragging rights and drove them into the ground. but elijah was prideful, so maybe that was just him.

I wish I could say this was a story about how I got on the bus a boy and got off a man more cynical, hardnened, and mature and shit. But that’s not true. The truth is I got on the bus a boy, and I never got off the bus. I still haven’t.
