Ohsweken Demons

The Ohsweken Demons are one of five teams in the Canadian Lacrosse League. They play out of the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, Ontario.

The Ohsweken Demons announced Friday that their team’s coaching and management staff has been modified for the upcoming season.

2015 Head Coach, Ron Henry will transition into the role of the team’s General Manager. This move is being done as Vince Hill moves into a league role that will see him assist with the continued success of both Jr. C-Lax and pro player development.  Henry has spent two seasons in the Canadian Lacrosse League, winning a Creator’s Cup with the Iroquois Ironmen in 2013, and leading the Ohsweken Demons to the Creator’s Cup final last season.  Additionally, he has been involved with the NLL’s Buffalo Bandits, the Iroquois Nationals indoor team, and the Six Nations Chiefs.

“The Ohsweken Demons are one of the most successful teams in C-Lax history.” said Ron Henry. “We will focus on continuing that success, and build on our tradition of winning.”

Roger Chrysler accepts the role of Head Coach this season, having spent two seasons with the Demons as an Assistant Coach.  Chrysler has great chemistry with Henry having been a part of the 2013 Creator’s Cup champion Iroquois Ironmen.  His coaching resume also includes time behind the bench of the Jr. B Niagara Thunderhawks and, most recently, the Sr. B St. Catharines Saints, helping them to a bronze medal at the 2015 Presidents’ Cup.  

Chrysler is excited to be back with the Demons this season saying, “I’m looking forward to being back with the Demons as the Head Coach this season.  Obviously, there are big expectations for this team having reached the Creator’s Cup final in each of the last two seasons, and we are excited to get back on the floor and back to work.

The Canadian Lacrosse League (C-Lax) is pleased to announce six players have recently signed NLL contracts for the upcoming season.  The Colorado Mammoth have re-signed alumni Mike Burke while also signing Geoff McNulty (Durham Turfdogs).  Additionally, theGeorgia Swarm have signed netminder, Grant Crawley (Southwest Cyclops), the Buffalo Bandits have signed Corey Fowler (Niagara Lock Monsters), the Rochester Knighthawkshave signed Jake Crans (Southwest Cyclops), and the Toronto Rock have re-signed alumniSteve Fryer.

On Monday, September 28, 2015, the National Lacrosse League (NLL) hosted their 2015 draft at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre.  Over the course of the evening, three C-Lax players were selected:

Doug Buchan (Niagara Lock Monsters) - Saskatchewan Rush

Thomas Hoggarth (Durham Turfdogs) - Georgia Swarm

John. St. John (Durham Turfdogs) - Rochester Knighthawks

Niagara Lock Monsters goaltender, Doug Buchan said, “Walking up to the stage was the most amazing feeling that I have ever experienced, it was exciting but also felt very rewarding that all the years I have played and worked has paid off.  The whole experience of draft night was surreal and is going to be a memory that I will remember forever.”

Buchan was a rookie last season with the Niagara Lock Monsters appearing in three games and posting a 10.80 GAA and .740 SV%.  “The experience that I gained from the C-Lax season was very valuable and taught me a lot.”  Buchan said, “practicing with better shooters, adjusting to a faster game that I am use to at the junior level and most of all it helped me enter training camp with my Junior A team in mid-season form. This was my first opportunity to play winter lacrosse and it was a huge benefit to my development. Coming to a new team and starting at the bottom of the depth chart and having to prove myself at a higher level was great experience.  Overall C-Lax was one of the reasons for my successful Junior A season and gave me valuable lessons that I am going to take into training camp with the Saskatchewan Rush.”

From September 18-27, the Onondaga Nation hosted the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships (WILC).  This event saw thirteen Nations gather together to compete and celebrate the game of lacrosse.  C-Lax is proud to have been a part of this important international event by having nineteen current and former players and coaches participating

Ohsweken Demons’ Offence Struggles In First Loss of the Season

The Barrie Blizzard (2-2) used a strong second and third quarters to defeat the Ohsweken Demons (2-1) 9-7 on Friday night at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

In a quiet first quarter, the Demons would open the scoring with just under five minutes remaining when Dewey Porter would take a feed from Chris Attwood and bury it behind Barrie goaltender Angus Dineley.  Blue Hill would follow that up just over a minute later and the Demons went into the second quarter up 2-0.

The Demons kept it on in the second opening the quarter just 45 seconds in when Travis Hill was left all alone in front of the Blizzard goal, quickly making it 3-0 for the Demons.  Finally, with just over ten minutes remaining in the quarter, Barrie’s Mike Teeter would take a pass from Connor Latimer and get the Blizzard on the board.  Barrie would go on to score three more in the quarter and find themselves leading 4-3 heading into half time.

The Blizzard would open the third with a goal from Mike Mawdsley, who took a great pass from AJ Masson.  Michael Teeter would complete his hat-trick less than a minute later giving Barrie a 6-3 lead.  Roger Vyse would get the Demons back on the scoresheet with twenty-five seconds left in the quarter, and the Blizzard would go into the final frame leading 6-4.

In the fourth, the Blizzard would open the quarter with a goal from Darryl Robertson, putting the Barrie up by three goals.  The Demons would storm back with back to back goals from Roger Vyse and Josh Johnson; pulling the Demons back within one goal.  However, the Blizzard were not shaken and Connor Latimer would roll off a screen, taking a pass from Mike Teeter and burying it behind Jake Henhawk.  Brad Levick would add some insurance for Barrie three minutes later and the Blizzard would lead by three.  Roger Vyse would add one final goal for the Demons with twenty seconds left but, the Blizzard would hold on for the 9-7 victory.

Five Demons Named in CLax Players of the Week

The Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) is pleased to announce its Players of the Week for week three of the 2015 season.

Offensive Player of the Week: Torrey Van Every – Ohsweken Demons – Van Every was unstoppable on Friday night as he netted four goals. He currently leads CLax and the Demons with six goals on the season.

Honourable Mention: Roger Vyse – Ohsweken Demons - Vyse was able to tally two goals and four assists for a total of six points in his first game of the season.

Defensive Player of the Week: Jay Preece – Southwest Cyclops – Preece was rock solid allowing 10 goals against, with 38 shots on net.  Preece’s performance was highlighted by an incredible save that robbed Dallas John of a sure goal.

Honourable Mention: Jake Henhawk – Ohsweken Demons – For the second week in a row Henhawk stood on his head in net, aiding the Demons to back-to-back victories.

Transition Player of the Week: Dylan Webster – Southwest Cyclops – Webster was instrumental in Southwest’s efforts against Ohsweken, netting two goals and adding an assist.

Honourable Mention: Tom Montour – Ohsweken Demons – For the second week in a row Montour was influential for the Demons, he added a goal and an assist to his stats and is currently tied for the league lead in points with eight.

Rookie of the Week: Rodd Squire – Ohsweken Demons – Squire would capture the game winning goal for the Demons, also adding another goal and assist.

Honourable Mention: Travis Burton – Southwest Cyclops - The 8th round selection in the 2014 draft added a goal an assist for the Cyclops.

Ohsweken Demons Storm Back In Fourth Quarter to Defeat Cyclops

In week three of the 2015 Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) season, the Ohsweken Demons would use a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Southwest Cyclops 10-9 in their home opener at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

In the first quarter, the Ohsweken Demons would open the scoring just over five minutes in when Tom Montour would take a pass from Kyle Jamieson at the side of the net and put it behind Cyclops goalie Jay Preece.  The Cyclops would answer five minutes later when Dylan Webster would score just as a Demons penalty expired.  Southwest’s Jordan Critch would give the Cyclops the go ahead goal but, Rodd Squire of the Demons would pot one of his own and the first quarter would end tied 2-2.

In the second, the Cyclops would take the lead on two quick goals from Eric Pitre and Ryan MacGregor.  Ohsweken’s Torrey VanEvery would put in his first of the night and the Cyclops went into the half up 4-3.  The highlight of the second quarter was Cyclops goalie Jay Preece robbing Dallas John with a potential save of the year.

The third quarter was scoreless until Torrey VanEvery would pick up his second of the game and tie things up at four.  That seemed to ignite the Cyclops as they would score four goals in the quarter and go into the final frame leading 8-6.

The fourth quarter would be all Demons as they would storm back with three straight goals from Torrey VanEvery (2) and Roger Vyse to take the lead 9-8.  Then, with 2:41 remaining in the game, Cyclops’ Dan Keane would tie it up 9-9.  However, with just over a minute remaining, Rodd Squire would bury a pass from Josh Becker and seal the Demons victory.

Ohsweken’s Henhawk, Montour & Becker Named In Players of the Week

The Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) is pleased to announce its Players of the Week for week two of the 2015 Season.

Offensive Player of the Week: Michael Teeter – Barrie Blizzard – Teeter was a key player in Barrie’s first win of the season netting four goals and one assist. Teeter joined the Blizzard this week after Colin Boucher was signed to a 1-year contract with Vancouver Stealth of the NLL.

Honourable Mention: Corey Fowler – Niagara Lock Monsters - Fowler was able to rack up three goals and two assists for the Lock Monsters.

Defensive Player of the Week: Thomas Hoggarth – Durham Turfdogs - Hoggarth was solid on defence causing a number of turnovers.  Hoggarth also added his first goal of the season this weekend.

Honourable Mention: Jake Henhawk – Ohsweken Demons – Henhawk made 28 saves in his first game of the season, which included some crucial stops in the final minutes to secure a Demons’ win.

Transition Player of the Week: Tom Montour– Ohsweken Demons – Montour picked up two goals and four assists; he was instrumental in sparking a fourth quarter rally.

Honourable Mention: Dylan Goddard – Durham Turfdogs - Goddard was a key part of the Turfdogs transition game picking up two goals and one assist.

Rookie of the Week: Mark Vradenburg – Niagara Lock Monsters – The 2nd round pick in the 2014 Entry Draft recorded a hat trick and added an assist, making a big impact for the Lock Monsters.

Honourable Mention: Josh Becker – Ohsweken Demons – Becker showed that he is well suited for CLax in his season debut generating numerous scoring chances and playing stellar defence.

Ohsweken Demons Battle For Win Over Niagara In Season Opener

The Ohsweken Demons came out on top over the Niagara Lock Monsters in the first game of their 2015 season. The final score of this electrifying game was 11-9. Although Niagara put up a valiant effort, it was not enough to hold back the Demons.

Niagara opened the scoring with back to back goals by Brendon Thenhaus and Corey Fowler.  The Demons would find the scoreboard when Kyle Jamieson scored the first goal of the Demons’ season. Travis Hill and Marty Hill added a goal each, making the score 3-2 for Ohsweken at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, Niagara rookie Mark Vradenburg notched a goal tying up the game 3-3. Josh Johnson scored for the Demons giving them back the lead at 4-3. Niagara would hit a scoring streak with goals from Devon Sartor, Thenhaus and with a minute remaining Vradenburg scored his second of the game making the score 6-4 for Niagara at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, Fowler buried his second goal of the game just under a minute into the second half. Torrey VanEvery and Josh Johnson each added a goal pulling the Demons within one. Just before the end of the third, Vradenburg seized his hat trick making the score 8-6 for Niagara at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Demons as they battled back to score three uninterrupted goals from Dewey Porter and two from Tom Montour. Corey Fowler landed a hat trick tying the score 9-9. The Demons then quickly pulled away with 5:37 remaining with goals from Torrey VanEvery and Rodd Squire.

The Ohsweken Demons Announce Roster for 2015 Season

The Ohsweken Demons unveiled their roster for the 2015 season, which consists of twenty returning players from last year’s team.  Despite losing their top point producer in Chris Attwood, the Demons roster will see the return of Wayne VanEvery, Josh Johnson and Tom Montour, who were three of their top point producers from last season.  Goaltender Jake Henhawk will also be returning between pipes and will look to carry the workload with Jake Lazore, and rookies Chase Martin and Brandon Styres battling for the back-up position.

The 2015 season will also see the return of Wenster Green, who spent 2014 with the Barrie Blizzard but, won the 2013 Creator’s Cup with the Iroquois Ironmen.  Jesse Johnson and Danny Vyse also return this season having played for the Demons in 2013.

Some impressive new faces in camp include Ty Thompson from the University of Albany, who is fourth all-time with the Great Danes with 154 goals.  Coming over from the Can-Am league are Josh Becker (24G 20A) and Rudi George (21G 16A) from the Newtown Golden Eagles, along with Mo Bissel (31G 11A) with the Tuscarora Tomahawks.

Ohsweken Demons Head Coach Ron Henry said, “There were some tough decisions made after a very competitive training camp.  We’re pleased with the amount of talent and dedication on this team and we’re focused on bringing the Creator’s Cup back to Six Nations.  We have players who have won at the NLL, MSL, Sr. B, Jr. A and Jr. B levels, it’s that culture of success that makes us all hungry for another championship.”
