WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I have finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel.... well sort of. Sadly, as you (Rusty) already know.... I am such a loser and didn't turn in all of my mounted pieces on time. However I did finish everything yesterday, like I said :( no printing was done. But ya know... shizznet happens.
Anyway, here is my final 5 piece pdf thing. I chose to include my life and death illustration, the Native American Heritage Month poster, book cover, product illustration and lastly my society of illustrators illustration.
1st one: Native American Heritage Month poster
-this made the list because I really liked how it turned out. I like how the poster has an old worn out feel to it. Plus, the line art that I did for this piece turned out pretty good. Overall I just like the texture, color and illustration. This puppy took me about 3.5-4ish hours to complete. The line art was easy, figuring out where to put my text and what font to use, now thats a whole other story. I was very indecisive when it came to that.
2nd: Life and Death Illustration
-So this one took me ages to complete, like really forever. My initial idea was to do a fish in a fish bowl then someone flushing them in the toilet, I just wasn't really feeling it, so I changed the concept. After a while of google searching dead things and what not I finally ended up doing what you see now. So I did a nice lil fox out in the snow somewhere and in the next scene that same fox has become a fashion accessory. As I worked on this project all I could think about was that dumb song, What does the fox say, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jofNR_WkoCE, there is the link... enjoy.
Umm... so yea, it took me awhile to get this done because, just with the assignments before this one, I would start them then stop and do a little bit of the newer assignment that was being assigned. I had difficulty painting the fur, at first I only did color blobs then as I tried to add in the fun it got lost because ... well I just didn't know what I was doing. At the last minute, last night I figured that I would go in and add a lot of black lines to suggest the fur instead of trying to do it with all the different colors the fox had (in its fur). I am really glad I did this, it gives the fox a lot more depth, which was lacking. So If you notice in the death scene the fox looks slightly different, as if he has been skinned and treated with all sorts of nasty chemicals to stay forever young. Which is exactly what happened, I made him look like this so that people could get a since of how dead he is and how he has now been made to look cartoony just to be someones fashion accessory. This took me about 17 hours to complete.
3rd: Book cover illustration
- so, because I am so lame and my school didn't make us read half the list you had listed, I had not read most of them, more like I watched just about all the movies that were based off the books. Anyway, I chose to illustrate Romeo and Juliet, why? No clue, I just did.
So I wanted this illustration to be very line art based. After I got that established I went in and digitally painted. I stuck to four solid-coated pantone colors. After that I added a gradient, which then changed my four colors to what you see above. This illustration gave me so much grief, because the colors I had on my computer looked totally different on the macs and that just was annoying. So I had to figure out how to get my colors look nice instead of the crap colors the mac was showing me. In the end I figured it out and it turned out very nicely. This project took me about 11.5-12ish hours. Most of the time was spent fixing the dang colors :|
4th: Product illustration
So by the time this was assigned, this class and others had lead me to wanting to become an alcoholic (just kidding). :P So I chose to illustrate this beautiful bottle of Patron tequila. I just love the shape and the color of this product, so I chose to illustrate, eventually I bought me some, and it tasted very good. Back to the point, uh, this was probably the first digital painting I had done. It was very annoying/frustrating. But I eventually figured it out and this is what I got. I feel like now that I know more about digital painting I could of redone this, but ain't nobody got time for that. This took me about 14 hours. If I did redo this, like when I am back at home or something, I would defiantly do it using watercolor.
5th: Society of Illustrators
I wasn't quite sure how to approach this assignment. I couldn't come up with anything awesome to make. I google searched for hours but nada. I eventually ended up illustrating a picture of my cousin that I had taken when we went to Fright fest in 6 flags this past october. I chose this picture because I really like the dumb looking face she made, when I put the Jamaican frog hat on her. I wasnt really sure how to illustrate her at first, I didn't really want to just pick out skin tones and paint just blob colors. So when I had established the base colors I would go in and add subtle lines to suggest the shape/shading that was on her. If there had to be a tag line on this I thing it would be something like
- Croak! out illustrations, or leap into art, something corny like that. This beast took me just about 20 hours to complete.
I think my top favorites would be the fox one, book cover and the society of illustrators.
IN CONCLUSION: this class has been some journey, I am really glad I got to take this class because I feel like it has helped with my ability to draw. I really liked the being able to use the tablet, although I love the unpredicability of watercolor more. I sadly do not have many watercolor pieces for this second half of the class because I found it too time consuming to do, when in reality it wasn't being on the computer took way more time. I would probably go back and redo some stuff in watercolor just to see what different results I could get.
Class is finally over and I made it to the end with some pretty decent artwork :D
