like in regards to the critique of men specifically: gender essentialism is what it sounds like. it's ascribing specific traits towards men with the belief or implication that they are inherent, immutable things that come with being a man.

what gender essentialism is NOT is acknowledging the system we live in and how it inherently benefits men, teaches and influences them as a whole towards consistent behaviors, and reinforces toxic masculinity, which effects all men who live under that patriarchal system.

the difference between these two is that gender essentialism says "men behaving bad is how they're born," and the second says that "men are taught to behave that way and rewarded for it." gender essentialists promote ideas that say men can't change, the second is calling for change so that men do not learn this behavior or get rewarded for it.

it is a NUANCE, and a critically important one.

but if your response to the phrase "gender essentialism" is to go "aha! critique of men is bad!" you lack the nuance and understanding that are required to be helpful and you need to stop talking and start reading.
