to be fair to giroux, his was more a case of being a drunk asshole to a cop and not, ya know, r*pe, domestic violence or an ongoing pattern of violent behaviour

still, he faced absolutely zero consequences, which could absolutely be attributed to his being a face of the NHL.  To be honest though, it’s just as likely that had he not been an NHL player and just your regular run-of-the-mill wealthy white man the charges would have been dropped anyways (which is, of course, a whole other conversation about white privilege and classicism)

And before anyone comes into my inbox about how AM34 was also just a case of getting drunk and disorderly in public, the difference here is that the victim of his actions wanted to press charges.  also (and you could ding me on this but honestly idc) there is a difference in terms of the trauma caused between being an armed police officer with a drunk guy trying to touch your butt in broad daylight in front of multiple witnesses, and being a black woman alone in an otherwise empty parking lot at night having a group of men trying to get into your car.  Maybe matthews thought it was a harmless joke because they weren’t actually going to do anything, but she sure as fuck didn’t know that
