Great blog! This isn't strictly mythology related, but one thing I noticed about the imps is that their masks each have characters of the iroha poem, with the exception of that merchant one. You probably already noticed that, but I thought it was neat.
Indeed they do! Their respective power relates to the order of the syllables, although the imps use katakana instead of hiragana. The first line of the poem, “I ro ha ni ho he to”, maps to the green imps (イ), red imps (ロ), yellow imps (ハ), blue imps (ニ), and black imps (ホ). Meanwhile, the merchant imps bear the symbol “hin” (品), meaning “goods”, and Ajimi, though a green imp, has “ri” (リ). I’m not sure what this one is supposed to mean.
Actually, I think the “iroha” poem is also used on the floor of the Sliding Doors of Doom on Oni Island…
