I am picking Justin Gaethje to beat Ilia Topuria.

This match up has been in the making for a while now. I remember making a post about this a year ago. To summarise said post, I said Ilia would most likely win. But Justin has a chance if he's able to keep Ilia at close range and hit him clean with some of those crisp uppercuts he has. Leg kicks will also help in taking away a lot of the power Ilia has in his hands. Aside from his KO of Charles Oliveira, a lot of Ilia's wins have been him knocking people out whilst they are on the back foot, mid combination. We haven't really seen him tested in the phone booth.

Power is the last thing to go, and even at Justin's older age now... Bro can still crack, we're talking about the person to end Prime Tony Ferguson after all. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok... Now with the recap out of the way, why am I actually picking Justin to win this fight? The short answer? Gut feeling. Back in 2020 after Khabib ducked Tony AGAIN, and the UFC booked that short notice fight against Justin. I was shooketh... I was anxious, I was sick for several days, and I couldn't sleep. I knew in my heart that Tony most likely would win. But there was this real feeling of impending dread I had that loomed over me. Then Tony did a second weight cut in 2 weeks, and well... Once Justin survived the Upper Cut in round 2 we all know what happens, don't make me go back to that bad time.

The feeling I have right now, is that exact same feeling. The build up, Ilia's confidence, it all feels too, too cocky. It doesn't feel right, and I don't even know why I have this gut instinct again because I don't even like Ilia Topuria! Tony is my favourite fighter so it at least made sense there!

I wish I could give you a rational breakdown as to why! I really do! But I know better than to bet against this omen i'm once again feeling. Thus, I have to go with Justin. Feel free to absolutely clown me if I end up being completely wrong. I'm aware at how retarded this pick will look. I don't care though.

Paddy vs Justin... Went as we all expected let's be honest.

As a brit, I feel shitty for picking Justin to win this fight obviously. But, can you blame me? Anyone with a pair of eyes and a brain, would have picked Justin vs Paddy... It was the obvious outcome. Paddy is a great fighter, but he has major holes in his game that have been evident from day 1. His chin stays higher than me on an Acid Trip. Yes, you can get away with this fighting Jared Gordon, a 40 year old Tony Ferguson << Even then Tony took it to him, and this was before his TRT ressurgance in boxing. I don't care how old Justin was, because unlike Tony who relied on his awkward style and athleticism, Justin hits HAAARD! Very hard. Power is the last to go, so even if Justin looked like shit, it didn't matter. If he hits your chin, you are going to take a beating. Paddy was like a fish out of water, when you can't take Justin down and thus your best path of victory is gone. You are NOT beating him in the stand up, you aren't Max Holloway, you don't have the striking or the fluidity of Illia Topuria. This was always going to go one way, and this is exactly why I'm concerned for Paddy going forward. There are no more easy fights now with his ranking, Charles Olivera, Arman, Max, Illia, Makechev if he ever comes back down. If he doesn't FIX his fucking defense and learns to not put his chin up, his career is done quite frankly. He ain't beating any of the guys I've listed on the feet, he isn't taking most of them down either. He is fucked. For Justin. See people are counting him out for this fight with Illia, and Illia will probably win. Certainly now after the wife fiasco. I have learned from experience to never count Gaethje out, I STILL HAVE NIGHTMARES about that 5 round fight he had with Tony. It still haunts my dreams. I would not be surprised if Justin crashes the party one more time and beats Topuria. If he can rely on those nasty leg kicks to slow him down, and then use his power to land a good shot in the phone booth, I can definitely see him winning the title.
