Cy Twombly, the great American abstract painter, arrived in Rome in the late Fifties. This image belongs in a series shot by the iconic photographer Horst P. Horst for Vogue in 1966. Along with Twombly and his art, the image captures his explicit talent and passion for decorating. The apartment was in a 17th century palazzo originally built for the Borgia family. The ample rooms and grand proportions were perfectly suited for Twombly’s often oversized painting. The interiors were stripped away of centuries of old paint to reveal a shell of white washed walls and beautiful pale blue doors with gold moldings. The artful arrangement of antique furniture, contemporary art, classical busts and statues is a detailed lesson in art and design within itself.
