Onaga’s cause is stopping the so-called “relocation” of the Futenma U.S. Marine Air Station, a base located in the middle of a mid-sized city, Ginowan City, on the island of Okinawa, to another part of the island prefecture, Henoko in Nago City. In actuality, what is taking place is more than a small base “relocation.” It is the planned construction of a massive new all-purpose base, the first large scale American base to be built in Japan since the 1950s.

To promote their art exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM), artists Laura Kina and Emily Hanako Momohara will be visiting our Uchinaaguchi Class! They will discuss their exhibition and reconnecting with their Okinawan roots. They will also be selling and signing copies of their art book, which features their original works from the JANM exhibition and essays from scholars.

In Okinawan dialect, "urizun" means early summer. A documentary film, titled "Okinawa Urizun no Ame" (Okinawa: Rains of urizun), taught me the following tanka poem: "The rains of urizun are rains of blood and tears/ They remind us of the spirit of 'Ishiji' (cornerstone)."

Okinawa Blue The last time I was in Okinawa visiting family, my uncle in Yomitan gave me this deep turquoise handwoven pouch as an omiyage (souvenir). My mother looked at it and said, "Okinawa blue." I loved that, so now that's how I think of this color, and why I chose it for the name of this blog. It's connected to my mother and her family. It's the color of the sea at its most vibrant, of infinite horizons. It's a spiritual color that stands for healing and hope and peace.
