woah.. big mission this weekend... 😅 wish me luck!
they are absolutely on opposite ends of the music spectrum, but nero doesn't mind. that's the great thing about music — there's crazy variety, and everyone gets to go along to the beat of their own drum. music allows for the expression of individuality and creativity — two things that the order used to hate, and therefore, were two things that nero grew to love basically immediately. besides, yuuta absolutely gives the impression of this elegant, music-loving guy. to be honest, nero, on the opposite spectrum of things, cannot remember at all the last time he listened to classical music — unless church hymns count. those, he's heard far too many of them. the only ones he can stand are kyrie's, after all, where she sings, and that's because she's his friend and he cares about her.
“ i listen to music when i probably shouldn't be listening to music, ” nero finds himself admitting. “ during the day, when i'm working, i listen to music at top volume. when i'm walking somewhere, i'm also listening to music. taking the bus? music. it helps me drown out the noise of the world, and everything. and if it isn't fast and loud, it can't drown out the noise of the world, so i guess we just listen to music for different reasons, in this case. ” he pauses for a moment. he does listen to slower-paced music later at night when he's in the van by himself, sometimes, but that's honestly very rare. “ i get it, though. late-night isn't exactly blasting music in your ears sort of timing. i'm not opposed to a recommendation or two, by the way. it might not usually be my sort of jam, but i don't mind collecting a few songs that don't fit my usual discography. maybe i'll end up listening to it when i've got a quiet moment at night. ”
it might be nice to have an actual song to turn up in his ears that isn't screaming after he's just had a nightmare.
“ rock star outfits are really cool, especially when done well. but you can argue that anything is cool when done well, so yeah, trust me on this. my opinions are always the best in general. ” nero allows himself to boast a little bit. he conjures the image of himself in different imaginary rockstar outfits in his head, and can't help but chuckle. “ psh, if you think i could play the guitar well and that it matches my aesthetic, at the very least, i might just give it a shot. besides, who knows? maybe i'll be the one to encourage you to start your violin or piano career, and you'll, ” he lifts his head from his palm to point briefly at yuuta himself, before resting his face back in his palm again, “ become a hit because of your secret dormant talent that's totally real now, by the way, and become world famous. then, i'll take credit for inspiring you, and get a cut of the funds so that i can pay for the gas on my van, and still go to diners for milkshakes at 3am. ” nero laughs at the idea, tilting his head into the side and further into his palm, crooked, fanged smile still on his face.
"world famous? oh, i'm really not sure about that one, haha!" he's got enough going on in his life already by now, after all. he can do without anything else on his plate. and, well, let's be honest, even without considering the fact that yuuta himself has nowhere near enough skill for any of that, are there any world-famous violinists (or pianists, even) that the average person can think of? of course, he personally has his favourites, but he's pretty certain that he's an outlier in that regard and that most of the population doesn't really go past mozart in terms of instrumentalists. they're not really the artists that tend to attract stardom, unfortunately, no matter how deserving of it they are. "but don't worry," he adds belatedly, "if i ever do get famous in, uhm, whatever one in a million chance that is — i'd absolutely make sure to get you the funds as your earnings for inspiring me. it's the least i could do, haha!"
yuuta tucks a strand of loose hair behind his ear before he continues talking. "recommendations, though... i've got a lot of those." a lot is an understatement, considering this is all but everything that he listens to on a regular basis. he pauses for a moment, thinking back to his many favourites, trying to guess at one that nero might like best. "well, hymn to apollo by arthur bliss is a favourite of mine, although i'm not sure it would be your style. it's rather... soft." and nero does not seem like the type to listen to that kind of music, and he would guess the same even if he didn't just tell yuuta that his typical genre was rock. "automne, cécile chaminade, is another one i really love to listen to, especially in the early mornings. it's such a lovely sound," he can't help but add anyways, even if nero never ends up checking it out. it's not often that he gets the chance to talk about his music, and even though it's not a strong passion of his, it's something he still cares about.
"although, for you specifically..." he trails off, thinking. rock and classical music don't tend to overlap much as a genre in general, but even less so in his own little sphere of favourite songs. it takes him a moment or two of thought to come up with something that he thinks would capture nero's interest. "i think i would recommend something like red autumn or — oh, ego death, i think that you would really like that one, actually. yeah! ego death, ben madcalf," he nods his head enthusiastically, perking up with excitement. "that's not technically classical music, but — it's really, really good. i like it, at least. it's a mix of this more traditional orchestra sound with electronic beats that are much more modern. it makes for this super interesting sound auditorily. i really like the beat drop in that one, too! if you were going to listen to any of these songs, definitely, definitely check out that one. ego death, ben madcalf," he repeats for good measure.
he pauses for a second, realizing how carried away he had gotten in the moment. "uhm, don't feel pressured to, though, of course! i don't mean to be pushy, or anything like that. and if you have any recommendations for me, i will of course take them too!" expanding his music palette could probably do him some good, anyways.
( ☀️ ) re: jewelry, i don't think yuuta wears much, but i have a few thoughts about what he would wear. rika's ring, of course, but he uses that as more of a physical connection to manifest her these days, so he doesn't keep it on all the time. i think he wears exactly two other rings — one he bought soon after jjk0 because he realized he liked the weight of rika's ring on his finger but knew he couldn't wear that all the time. now it serves as a nice reminder of his time abroad, because that's where he bought it.
to me, the other ring was a gift from his friends (whether it was maki, toge, panda, someone else entirely, all of them together, etc, doesn't matter too much). he likes having reminders of the people he cares about right there on his hands, first rika and now them. no bracelets and no earrings, but i think he also has a small locket that he wears underneath his clothes, and rika's ring fits perfectly into it so that's where it's kept when he's not wearing it both for safekeeping and easy access.

in which okkotsu yuuta & nero sparda meet.
there's really only so many times you can wake up from a nightmare before you begin to grow tired of it. cold sweat, forcing your eyes open, laying in the dark, staring at the ceiling — wondering where did the time go, what could i have done to prevent it? that kind of guilt sitting heavy in your chest, burying itself into your lungs, finding a place in your ribs to settle in — deep, crushing, drowning, is hard to ignore. it's like having an anchor placed right where your heart should be, and you're trying to swim — but that guilt, it keeps dragging you under.
there's only so many times you can wake up from a nightmare before you begin to grow tired of that feeling. where instead of just shame, it turns into frustration. it undergoes metamorphosis, splitting open the delicate fabric of the cocoon, breaching as ugly strands of moisture cling to its newborn body. and after a moment of delicate, beautiful silence in the dark, where it seems the whole world comes to a halt in awe of its beauty — it rears its ugly, newborn head into the world with a flutter of its wings, still wet with tears and regret. but it has changed, and it has been born, and its name is anger.
around the lamppost, the moths flap their wings, circling around the source of the light, unable to reach the source due to a barrier of glass. cigarette smoke, in the deeper parts of certain cities, sometimes is so strong in the midst of back alleyways that it feels like he's trying to see through a haze — and what makes it even worse is the smell. nero can't stand the smell of smoke, and yet inhales it anyways. second-hand smoke is no joke, or at least that's what they used to preach at the church before tossing the cigarette pack onto the ground in front of another kid who'd gotten caught for having it on him. he'd been shamed, that day, during prayer, in front of the whole crowd of people, all wearing hoods over their faces like they'd been ashamed and afraid to be alive.
the great sparda died for you, sanctus says, in his memories, in his dreams, the words bouncing around in his head. he knows that isn't true. nobody knows what happened to sparda. and you repay his kindness like this? he knows the tone so well that he can recite it in his sleep. it's bitter, with resentment, helplessness, disappointment. nero has always been a lost cause — too loud, too opinionated, too curious, too wrong and too different. and so even when he'd hated the smell of smoke, he'd tried, once, with that kid who'd gotten caught for it.
he'd gotten glared at. even among outcasts, nero is still an outcast — and this sentiment will ring true until the end of time, he feels.
so, nero hates the smell of cigarette smoke, and stands it anyways, because he can't afford to be picky. affording to be picky would be like saying he lives in luxury. nero has never lived in luxury. (too-small clothes until he'd gotten his uniform for working for the knights, too-small beds to sleep in, shitty hand-me-downs, a fucked up mp3 player — everything is fought for, in his life. even to live; that is a battle.) he waves it out of the way of his face with a disgruntled wrinkle of his nose, bumps into a man in the middle of the darkness who turns. the stranger's face contorts into something ugly.
nero can't hear what he says over the screaming of music in his ears, and instead chooses to raise his middle finger before kicking at a stray rock on the ground, ignoring whatever insults would have been thrown at him in favour of moving forwards. moving forwards, isn't that what everyone does, in the end? (even if it means leaving everything behind? even if it means leaving himself behind?)
so, it starts like this. nero has a nightmare, and he gets out of bed in the middle of night to take a train to the outskirts of downtown that costs too much — not that he cares about the cost right now — and walks down streets until he comes to the heart of the city. it's bright, and surely he'd note the absurdity of the loudness if he didn't have his headphones in at nearly full volume. people stumble by him, drunk, laughing, arms wrapped around one another — warm breaths, warm bodies, alive and happy. (nero turns his gaze away to curb the disgust rising in his throat. whether that sort of emotion has wormed its way into his esophagus like a parasite was placed there by the church, or because of jealousy, he does not know. he does not care.)
the singer in his ears screams something, but nero can't make out the words — not that he really cares to. the sound of music is there to only drown out his overly-loud thoughts, and is the only thing that remotely even comes close to comforting or therapeutic. a woman and her boyfriend walk by him, and one of them exhales cigarette smoke again, and nero just—
without thinking, he pushes open the door to the nearest shop, which thankfully has its lights on and seems to be open at this godawful time in the very early morning. even as he slides his headphones off to rest around his neck, he can still vaguely hear the drums and the guitar. if you don't listen to music at full volume, what's even the point?
nero's eyes scan over the interior of the shop without really taking in any of the details, eyes landing on the menu choices hanging from the ceiling. so, he's walked into a ramen shop to get the cigarette smell out of his face. he might as well order something to eat — his stomach feels empty from the fact that he skipped dinner yesterday to just sit and listen to music in nico's van. she hadn't asked about what the hell was going on in his mind (thank sparda for her), and had just been content to let her lay on the couch in her van and exist. (it's hard to do that. 'exist'.)
the whole place seems to be empty, save for the presence of one other guy, who nero doesn't really pay attention to. he clears his throat, and walks up to the register — where a very tired-looking, middle-aged man asks him for his order. nero orders the first thing he sees on the menu that's in his budget, and with his free hand that isn't wrapped in a sling, goes to fumble his wallet out of his pocket. his hands feel shaky; cons of having a nightmare just about an hour ago — and with the fact that he's using his non-dominant hand to fish his wallet out of his pocket, it only takes a little bit of a fumble for his grip to loosen. nero's wallet goes tumbling from his hands, slipping through his fingers and onto the floor — even then having the audacity to actually slide across the floor away from him.
frustration immediately settles deep in his chest. really, just when his night couldn't get any worse. “ shit. you have got to be fucking kidding me. ”
@okkotsuyuutaa
yuuta being unable to sleep has never exactly been a rare occurrence, even back when he was simply a child with no knowledge of how horrible the world could be. first it was pure health-induced anxiety, which his mother would have to soothe him about in his hospital bed for hours upon hours before he managed to let his eyes shut and the nauseating thoughts finally went away. after rika's death (and her subsequent transformation) came the steady terror, the dread that kept him constantly awake and on his guard, and the nightmares that tormented him whenever he eventually managed to drift off. jujutsu high may have helped with that bone-deep fear, but it had then also introduced a new pastime to keep him awake: training until the early hours of the morning, something that he now does far more often than not. and, of course, there is still the anxiety, still the nightmares, worse than ever before after all that he's now experienced.
needless to say, it's far more rare that yuuta actually gets a decent night's worth of sleep than not.
tonight in specific had ended up being particularly rough on him. while this had actually been one of the rare nights where he'd been able to fall asleep on time, he'd awoken with a racing heart by a familiar recurring nightmare — one in which he found himself in his small twelve year old body, those terrible years back when he had his best (and only) friend in the form of a special grade curse he couldn't even dream of controlling at his side. in this dream, he had been surrounded by the child versions of his current jujutsu high friends, and they had been playing and laughing much in the same way they do now before dream-rika had killed them all. in his mind, the blood still stained his hands.
nightmares are nothing new, of course not, and this hadn't even been one of his worst — nothing close to his worst. but when he tossed and turned in his bed for an hour afterwards to no avail, he figured that he may as well give up on the idea of sleeping for now and take a break. it's not as though running on a few hours of sleep has ever been anything unfamiliar to him, and, besides, a short walk to clear your mind never hurt anyone.
with this in mind, it's no surprise that here he is now: in a small ramen shop that is all but empty, incredibly late at night, waiting for his order to be made with the dark circles under his eyes deeper than ever. he's pretty sure rika wouldn't be pleased with him if he starved, which is how he'd ended up here.
yuuta's eyes flit up the second that the door opens — if there's one thing that jujutsu high has taught him, it's to be aware of his surroundings (although, ever since rika, that's been second nature to him anyways). he scans over the new entry briefly, gaze darting from the headphones to the sling, before turning away. he finds himself a little curious, but he's never been one for small talk with strangers, so nothing is done about it just then.
the sound of something falling against his floor has him paying attention to his fellow customer again. "oh!" he exclaims, eyes on the wallet that had skidded across the floor and landed near him. "here, let me get that for you!" he picks it up without a second thought, before taking a few steps closer to the stranger so that he can hand it over.
"there you go!" he beams at him, smile bright and genuine. he pauses for a second afterwards, eyes landing on the sling, before hesitating and adding, "...uhm, would you like some help with that? i don't mean to be presumptuous, but i imagine it must be difficult to handle money while being unable to use your dominant hand?" yuuta has never been particularly great with interactions with strangers, but he hopes that this isn't some social faux pas.
on instinct, nero turns his head towards yuuta with narrowed eyes, mouth opening, lips forming the familiar start to the words ‘fuck off’ — until his brain registers what yuuta had said. he's so used to people addressing him only to either shout at him, insult him, prod at him, or accuse him — hardly any of his interactions with strangers are ever positive. so, it's become second nature to immediately snap back when talked to, which probably isn't a good habit to have, but it is what it is. so, in response to this new information, his mouth snaps shut so fast you'd think he was trying to win an olympic award, and almost sheepishly, his expression shifts from angry to awkward in a matter of moments, blue eyes turned towards yuuta's hand (and his wallet) rather than his face.
a moment of silence stretches between the two of them as nero contemplates what to do next. he's not in the habit of accepting a stranger's pity or kindness — hell, every act of kindness that has ever been given to him has felt like a two-faced, double-edged sword that came with a full ten papers of terms and conditions, and if nero were to accept it and sign his name at the bottom — the consequences would be devastating.
his first instinct to is to snap at this friendly-faced stranger no, i don't need your fucking pity, but he also considers the fact that this man is right. nero is using his non-dominant hand because his dominant hand actually looks like something straight from hell, so he can't exactly take it out in public, and if he spends five minutes fumbling in front of the man at the cash trying to pull out his card, he might just kill himself out of embarrassment.
( besides. something about yuuta's bright-eyed demeanour and willingness to help reminds nero a little bit of someone he used to know. he isn't in the habit of trusting strangers, but... it's late at night. it's whatever. nero can call it a mistake tomorrow morning. )
so, slowly, eyes darting up to scan yuuta's face for any sign of danger or the fact that he's being somehow tricked, nero nods. “ erm, thanks. ...about getting my wallet, that is. and for offering. you're right. it would sort of suck ass to try and get my card out from my wallet with just my left hand, wouldn't it? ” his words sound slightly hesitant, but it's mostly overshadowed by the attempt to put on his usual swagger and sense of humour. it does fall a little flat because of how tired and awkward he is, but nero's trying, and offers yuuta a small, crooked smile in return for his help.
during that quiet stretch of time between his own question and nero's reply, yuuta resists the compulsion to fidget with his hands or shift from foot to foot nervously. he has never been good with silence (and definitely not when it's awkward like this, and extra definitely not with a stranger, too), and tonight is no exception to that. he manages to keep his free hand by his side without playing with it and his feet planted firmly on the ground, however, which he'll consider as a win for the night. you take 'em where you can get 'em. he thinks he's heard maki say something along those lines at some point.
...sometimes it strikes him how different his confidence and stance can be in battle and in social situations. this is another one of those (frequent) moments where he wishes the kind of self-assurance that he finds in combat transferred to scenarios like this. he feels awkward and painfully unsure, but at least when nero offers him a small smile in return, some of that thankfully does fade away.
"ah, yes, that's what i thought," he agrees, a small nervous chuckle escaping his lips. "to be honest, i thought you were about to decline for a second. uhm, which would've been well within your rights, of course!" he clarifies quickly. "i just think i would feel bad if i didn't at least offer, haha."
he feels the urge to wince — it's not often that he wishes he was more like gojo (well, personality wise, at least) but having his suaveness would come in handy right about now. "anyways! there you go." he holds open the wallet for nero so that he can pick out whichever card he'd like with his free hand, because he figures that getting it for him is venturing into the territory of snooping, and he's pretty certain he's about one conversational fumble away from being ostracized from society.
nero snorts, plucking his card out of his wallet and tapping it against the terminal to pay for his ramen. the beep signals the loss of even more cash from his account — sparda save him, he's always broke, buying stupid cigarettes for nico. the guy at the cash who'd been watching the whole interaction just looks too tired to even care about what he's witnessing, which nero is thankful for. the less questions, the better. the conversation is definitely awkward, but at this point, nero is committed to actually talking to this guy. he wonders if he'd be an asshole if he actually told yuuta that he had considered declining his request for more than just a second. he'd been considering it for several seconds, actually.
...even nero knows that would be an asshole move, so he opts out of actually telling this poor guy about the fact that he had genuinely been considering declining his offer. “ relax, ” nero says, feeling amused at how nervous yuuta seems to be. the initial awkwardness is still there, of course, but now it's definitely being overridden by how nervous this other guy seems to be. at least he's not the only one entirely out of his depth here, and it makes him feel a little more confident. his smile creeps a little wider across his face, revealing sharp canines. “ i'm not in the habit of biting. probably. ” he slides his card back into the wallet before taking it — patting yuuta on the shoulder with it still in his hand — and the source of his bank is then pocketed.
“ do appreciate you doing that for me, though, ” he says, because nero is keeping up his streak of not being a complete asshole. this is probably the most he's talked to a stranger that isn't a client in like, four months. it's also the last time he remembers where a conversation with a stranger was friendly instead of both of them shouting at one another, nero pulling out his gun, and flipping them off before shouting curses. “ it's definitely up there in 'things strangers have unexpectedly done to help me', probably currently ranking at number one, actually. you really didn't have to do all of that for me. ” shit, does this mean according to the laws of society, nero owes this guy one? he doesn't even know his name! shit, he doesn't even know his name! “ name's nero, by the way. ”
"oh!" yuuta blinks, quickly realizing that somehow, through his distraction, he'd managed to entirely forget to introduce himself to this poor guy. how rude. "yuuta," he says, offering him yet another friendly, sweet smile and raising his hand in greeting too, for good measure. "i'm sorry about that, i completely forgot to introduce myself!"
he hesitates for a second afterwards — banter like what nero had said earlier is a sign of friendship right? or, well, friendly intentions, at least? well, maki had been far more hostile during their first few interactions, and they're close now, so he should probably just take nero's advice of relaxing and roll with it. "haha, you caught me, i was a little nervous," he admits sheepishly. 'was' may not be fully accurate, but he's definitely not as nervous now that they've begun talking. "i don't talk to strangers too much and i wasn't really expecting to tonight, so forgive me if i've been a little bit... uhm, awkward." he pauses, fiddling with the ends of his shirt sleeves for a moment (ugh, and he was just saying he was getting better at not fidgeting, too), before adding, "you really don't have to thank me so much, though. of course! i'm happy to help. i'm sure most people would say the same."
has nero accidentally been thanking yuuta too much in his attempts to come off as a normal teenage boy who is totally well adjusted to society and knows how to deal with people? shit. if he backtracks too much, he'll come off as more of an asshole, but if he doesn't backtrack, will yuuta think he's nicer than he actually is and get preconceived notions about him? this is why nero doesn't talk to people, he's just remembered. people are complicated and social situations are awful to navigate. wait, why is nero even trying to come off as normal? it's not like he cares about how other people see him in the first place, and this is just some random teenager (or... well, nero thinks they're around the same age?) off of the street in a random ramen shop. none of this will matter tomorrow morning.
“ don't even worry about it, ” nero says, despite the fact that maybe yuuta should be worrying about it. he pulls his mp3 player out of his pocket, and in the universal sign for respect, turns off the music (that was probably still at least a little audible to yuuta, with how loud it was) with a click of a button. “ nice to meet you, yuuta. i don't think anybody is expecting to talk to a stranger at this time of the night, though. ” it's true — nero doesn't go out expecting to talk to people in general, though. nico says that he's a shut in, and nero disagrees — he's just really focused on his job and killing devils, okay? people can come later. plus, he and people don't usually mesh or match, so there's no point just going and looking for friends. especially not in favour of killing devils.
“ i don't really think that most people would say the same, though. most of the people that i run into are assholes, actually, and are happy to do the literal exact opposite of what you've just mentioned. they're all way too happy to be complete and utter assholes and pieces of shit, ugh, just thinking about it makes me pissed off... ” as nero grumbles, he walks over to a nearby seat, plopping down in it, and then proceeds to kick his feet up onto the table like the absolute fucking delinquent that he is. he's pretty sure he gets a dirty look from the chef. does nero care? no. “ whatever, it's not a big deal. point being, you're basically the nicest stranger that i've ever met, zero exaggeration. ”
yuuta follows suit, not taking a seat along with nero, but lingering near the table instead so that they can continue their conversation for a little while longer. he eyes the way that nero sits curiously, but doesn't comment on it aloud — he supposes that his stance fits with his attitude and overall aesthetic, even if he wouldn't have expected it after how much he had thanked him for such a simple act earlier. such a nice guy doesn't give him a feet up on the table vibe — or maybe yuuta's reading into things too much once again and a position is a position and it doesn't really mean anything at all. either way, he's not judging. nero does look rather cool in the pose, after all. it reminds him a little bit of something that gojo would do, honestly.
"...it sounds like you've had rather bad luck with the strangers you meet, in that case," he comments carefully. he knows a thing or two about bad luck himself — accidentally cursing your dead best friend at a young age will teach you a lot about misfortune, he's learned. that aside, though, he thinks that at least since starting school at jujutsu high, he's landed on the better side of interactions with strangers, especially considering what nero's saying about his own experiences. now that he doesn't have to worry about rika having a... reaction to any semblance of a wrong move from either party, interactions with people he doesn't know have become less terrifying recipes for disaster and more just a normal-ish level of nerve-wracking for an anxious teenager. so it's been better for him, lately. not the best, but better, and what more can he ask for right now?
he clears his throat, shifting from foot to foot yet again. "that being said, i'm still glad i could help!" he says honestly. "especially if it had such an impact!"
nero tosses his head back with the loudest, biggest sigh ripping its way out of his chest. it feels like all the tension leave his shoulder in his sigh the moment that yuuta brings up the idea of misfortune. nero does have bad luck. abandoned by both parents, bullied growing up, stuck in a stupid church-cult during all of his teenage years, and only when sanctus had gotten himself killed after nero had been absorbed into a makeshift god and they'd battled it out had peace been restored.
even now, nero is still haunted by the aftermath — he thinks back, briefly, on what it had been like to fuse with another human being. kyrie. for what had felt like an eternity and, at the same time, only a moment, they had been one. one person. like skin interlacing and veins meshing into one another, crushing with the unbearable noise of slick, disgusting flesh — and blood cells had stuck to one another like magnets, he had felt her heartbeat because it had been his heartbeat, too, inside that cocoon of demon-flesh, and he'd heard her thoughts in his brain, all screaming and loud as they had both cried out for another, to be free, as everything in them merged and then was separate, but also, together, each little cell—
bad luck. that is exactly what nero would call it. nero would also call it fucking bullshit, but still. bad luck in his past, but bad luck with strangers, too, sure, that works. nico tells him that he needs to stop being an asshole. he told her that he was going to shove the entire barrel of his gun down her throat and pull the trigger in return, which may have proved her point, but really, who cares?
“ bad luck. ” nero chuckles, after his sigh has faded into the open space between the two of them. his head rests against the uncomfortable edge of the top of the wooden chair. he stares up at the fluorescent, shitty lights. “ yeah. that's definitely what i've got going on for me, like, just in general, honestly. ” he makes a vague gesture with his hand, before lifting his head back up again so that he actually is looking at yuuta. “ but i think if we were going to get into that, it'd require some serious suspension of disbelief. ” fucking understatement of the century. what random guy off the street is going to believe him when he says he kills demons?? like, demons from hell kind of demons?? and also that he was absorbed into a false god?? “ so i'm just gonna tell you that you helped. and that i appreciate it enough to actually turn off my music to listen to you talk, which is basically the equivalent to getting an olympic gold medal. good on you. ”
certain things requiring some level of suspension of disbelief is not exactly a new concept to yuuta — after all, he is a jujutsu sorcerer, and he likes to think that, because of that, he understands very well the depths of how crazy that the world can be while the details remain entirely a mystery to the majority of the population. he's sure the average person would think that he was crazy if he attempted to explain the concept of exorcising curses to them, after all, true as it may be. and even beyond being a sorcerer, he's experienced enough strange, downright surreal things in his life that he's quite confident that there's not too much that would seriously surprise him anymore. he has a lot of practice when it comes to believing in impossible things.
to be honest, maintaining a suspension of disbelief is practically second nature at this point for yuuta. it has been since gojo first told him about a secret society of sorcerers and curse-wielders however long ago that had been, and even before that. it has been since rika. although he finds himself curious as to what nero could possibly be referring to, since he's certain it can't be anything quite as unbelievable as real, tangible curses, he doesn't broach the subject. the conversation is going well right now (he thinks? he hopes), after all, and he doesn't want to make a potential new friend uncomfortable by bringing up some sore topic.
he flashes nero another smile. "haha! you know what, i'll take that. an olympic gold medal sounds pretty nice, all things considered," he says good-naturedly. "i get it, though, i'm big on music myself," which is a pretty big understatement, actually, if he does say so himself — after all, he can only imagine what must be the number of nights he's spent by now sitting outside and drowning out his many thoughts with his favourite instrumentals. he coughs. clearing his throat, before continuing. "and it sounds like that makes two of us with the bad luck. here's to hoping it gets better with time, right?" although he doubts that it ever really will for him. such is the life of a jujutsu sorcerer, right?
nero is relieved that yuuta doesn't push the subject of suspension of disbelief, just a little bit, even if a more traitorous part of himself, ugly, weak, like a parasite, almost begins to wish that he had someone to tell. but if nero were to tell someone, it'd either be some complete stranger who was too high or drunk to even register what he'd said, or it'd have to be someone who got it. someone like kyrie. someone like nico, someone like dante, someone who had been there, someone who knew exactly what it was like to carry that sort of burden on his shoulders. the blood of sparda runs in your veins means nothing to the average citizen, but to nero, it means everything. he wishes it didn't.
( he wishes that he could just spill his guts, sometimes, to someone who would just listen, someone would be kind enough to just finally give him that sort of would just get it. in his mind's eye, he sits with his back pressed against the wall of his room next to a faceless figure, tells them about the church, tells them about fortuna, about devils, about dante, about his parents, the orphanage, his life. this faceless figure then tells him that it's all going to be okay. that what he went through wasn't his fault. that it wasn't all for nothing, that he can still build his life outside of this, all of these things that he tells himself in the dark to be spoken through the mouth of another person, and— )
nero's not weak nor gullible enough to believe that it would actually happen. that sort of thing is a naïve, childhood dream. even thinking about having someone to talk about makes his stomach turn in disgust. nero's perfectly fine. so he's glad that yuuta didn't push the subject, because the subject is disgustingly weak and it'll make him sound like he's high on drugs, or something. besides, there's something ten times better to talk about, here.
“ cheers to shitty luck that never seems to get better, yeah? ” it's humour tinged with resignation. nero's never going to get out of this path that he leads, both because of what he is, and what choices he's made. his bad luck is probably going to just get worse, actually. “ if i had any alcohol on me, i'd offer to actually drink to that, but i don't. ” ignore the fact that he's underage and technically can't drink. however, out of sheer respect for the topic of music, nero swings his legs off of the table and leans forwards, looking genuinely invested as he leans forwards. he actually holds and fixes his gaze to yuuta's face, a genuine, crooked grin spreading across his face. “ sooo! yuuta. ” excitement drips from every word, eyes gleaming with blatant interest, elbows against the table, left hand propping up his face. “ you a musical guy, then? what do you listen to? play any instruments yourself? ”
shitty luck that never seems to get better is a good way of putting it, honestly, even if it's not quite the choice of words that yuuta himself would've gone for. it's true nonetheless — he knows that his own luck, at least, will never get much better. jujutsu sorcerers aren't destined for long lives with peaceful endings like most people are, and he in specific never has been, either, considering his lineage. it's alright, though, he's long since made his peace with that. not completely, but enough for it to not bother him anymore, not during moments like this. everything has a price, and misfortune (in all senses of the word) seems to be the price of exorcising curses day after day. a fair bargain, to him.
still, he can't help himself from saying, "...i don't think you should discount yourself so early. there's always the chance for change." even if there's not for himself, then for his new friend (well, he hopes that this is a new friend). it's not as though nero is a sorcerer. yuuta is sure that things will turn out more than alright for him, and that's good, that's ideal, that's the way things should be. yuuta doesn't mind sacrificing his own chances at contentment for the wellbeing of civilians, for the innocent, good people of the world. he glances down for a second, toying with the ring on his finger — not rika's (he keeps hers safe, always, but doesn't ever wear it unless he plans on manifesting her), but another that he's gotten into the habit of wearing as of late — before looking back up at nero.
"but we don't have to talk about such serious topics right now," he says, offering him a small smile. "i'm sure that's not what you're in the mood for so late at night, haha. you asked me if i play any instruments?" he pauses, debating on how to answer the question. "the answer is no, not anymore," is what he eventually settles on saying, toying with the ring once again. "i was enrolled in both piano and violin lessons when i was younger, but i wasn't able to continue eventually due to certain... ah, events, and i'm quite sure that i wouldn't be able to play anything anymore if i tried." not that he really has gotten the chance to try in the first place — he doesn't own a violin, and he wouldn't know the first place to look to try and find a piano other than somewhere public, and he's hardly knowledgeable or confident enough in his skills to subject other people's ears to listening to him just yet. and even beyond his lack of instruments, he doesn't exactly have the time, either. it's a miracle that he can still find the time to listen to music in and of itself, really.
"i'd like to see if i could pick it up again in the future, maybe," he says thoughtfully. "but my life at the moment is a little too... hectic to really consider it." he's not too sure that that will die down anytime soon (just like his luck issue they were talking about earlier), but it's a nice thought regardless. to be able to indulge in his old hobbies from childhood again. unrealistic, maybe, but still a nice thought. "enough about me, though. what about you? any instruments?"
nero almost laughs when yuuta says that — there's always a chance for change. of course, the poor guy doesn't know the half of it, doesn't know the half of the things that nero's been through, doesn't know that he can just make them stop. he's a devil hunter, his right arm is demonic, he doesn't think that he could stop the bad things from happening to him. maybe if he had more power, maybe if he had all the power in the world, maybe if he was stronger, he could. but the problem is that nero is a magnet for danger and shitty situations, and honestly, he seeks them out himself, either with his bad attitude, or with the fact that he just goes looking for demons to hunt, even when he isn't being called and asked desperately for help. it gives him something to do. gives him a target to pour out all his rage onto.
and when it isn't emotional, then it's physical. moving out of an isolated island at the age of 16 and stepping into a whole other world that feels so modern compared to fortuna, where phones and headphones are normal and where guns are legal in other places — it was like stepping into an alien society. getting a place for himself hadn't been easy as nero had assumed at first, either and he'd run into nico due to circumstances he wouldn't exactly call lucky. she'd been nice enough to give him a place to stay in her van, assuming they split the cuts of whatever jobs he got, which is pretty much one of the only good things he has going for him. there's so many things that are bad luck in his life — his upbringing, his current, shitty, broke circumstances — that if he tried to get into it all, he isn't even sure that he could unpack it all by himself. even briefly thinking about it in his mind now feels like it's a mess, an amalgamation of emotions and words sticking to one another, like wading through molasses, like trying to make sense of something you're looking through a kaleidoscope through. impossible. a mess.
what nero means to say, is that bad luck is never going to end for him. he wouldn't be nero if he wasn't plagued by bad luck. but the subject has moved on, and nero doesn't want to linger on how powerless he is right now, how weak he is right now. so, instead, he zones in on yuuta's little ramble, pushing his thoughts about weakness to the back of his mind in favour of getting to know this guy more.
“ huh, ” nero says, very intelligently. “ yeah, no, you strike me as a violin and piano kind of guy, ” no, really, it does genuinely make a lot of sense. yuuta has this vibe about him — sort of... not gentle, per say, because nero's not the best at knowing what like. other people's characteristics are, and he's always too on his guard to associate such a positive adjective with a stranger, but he's got this weird sort of elegance to him that feels like he could make for a classical musician. maybe it's the hands? it's probably his hands. as well as the general vibes, too. “ well, in my opinion, you never know until you try. who knows, maybe you've got some secret dormant talent for it. if you've got the funds and the time sometime in the future, why not give it a shot? ” a pause. “ sorry about whatever hectic events you're going through, ” he adds. “ sounds like shit. hope it's over soon. ”
however, yuuta's question then has him lighting up a little bit. he leans even closer through the table, eyes practically sparkling. “ nah, i never got the chance to learn any instruments as a kid — was too busy dealing with shitty circumstances, but you know what i think would be hella cool? if i learned how to play the guitar. like, full on electric guitar. like, whole electric guitar, and i could do like, ” signifigantly more energetic than he'd been approximately a few moments ago, he mimics doing a sick ass riff in the air. “ imagine! wouldn't that be awesome? i wish i wasn't so broke right now, or i'd pick up a guitar and try to learn. don't have the funds for that kinda stuff. i'm too busy worrying about like, groceries, and stuff. but like, it's the thought that matters. and i listen to so much music that has like a bunch of electric guitar, i just can't help but imagine what it'd like to be a rock star... ” that's a dream that's never going to be realized, of course, but nero likes thinking about it sometimes. “ they have such cool outfits and such cool music, like, that's my general taste in music. rock. things like that. you can never go wrong with a guitar. hey, do you listen to more classical music, then, if you're like a piano guy? are you one of those people that listen to instrumentals instead of songs with words in them? ” this is... probably the most chatty nero has been in months, actually. he looks very invested in the conversation.
"i am," yuuta admits, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. by the way nero is talking, it sounds like the two of them are all but opposites when it comes to their music taste. yuuta can't remember the last time he listened to rock, if ever, other than the rare radio hit when he was much, much younger. "it's calming, in my opinion," he elaborates, "and i only really am able to listen to music when it's rather late at night, so i'm not usually in the mood for something fast-paced, and i like softer sounds in general. of course, there are plenty of good classical music options that are on the faster side, but they're not exactly my taste. i much prefer the slower instrumentals."
"it's been a while since i've looked at any kind of rock star outfits. or rock stars in general, really. are they that cool? i'll take your word for it, i suppose," he muses, thinking about what nero had said about it. electric guitar, riffs, general coolness — not necessarily his style (yuuta doesn't think anything about his appearance or mannerisms really screams cool), but he agrees, even with very little to go off of, that nero sounds like he knows what he's talking about. "i agree, though, i think someone playing guitar — or any instrument, really — is always a very impressive feat. it takes a lot of effort. and it does look very cool in the end." yuuta can't remember the last time he talked so much in a conversation with a stranger — has he ever? he's enjoying himself quite a lot. weird.
he hesitates for a moment, before deciding to continue. "...i'm not sure about having a secret dormant talent for piano or violin, but, ah, who knows? you may be right. i'll see if i can give it a shot, sometime. maybe if you ever give the guitar a shot, haha." he pauses for a second, picturing it, and almost immediately, yes, that makes a lot of sense in his brain. "i could see you playing the guitar well, i think," he says, very honestly. "it matches with your... aesthetic."
« Hey… » These conversations never got easier. It always felt far too intrusive for her tastes. Even after years of practice with the funeral home and her dad.. she still felt like a rat gnawing through dry wall, uninvited and violating. But the heart prevailed, even when social decorum SCREAMED at her to stay in her own lane.
Letting out a contemplative sort of huff, Yifei paused, concern knitting her brow, maybe she shouldnt be too direct, but, heavens that’d be worse, wouldn’t it? Decision made. Her voice dipped to just above a whisper
« Is everything okay? You’ve been out here for a while. Is, is it about her? »
(Left open ended, is she talking about Rika? Maki? Someone else entirely? Your choice!)
to be entirely honest, yuuta hadn't been expecting any conversation, so yifei's question breaking the silent atmosphere of the moment takes him a little off-guard despite its softness. he hesitates for a moment. "something like that," is what he settles on saying eventually.
unsurprisingly, yifei's managed to land right on the money. not that it's too hard to guess — after all, he's been sitting on a bench outside of the school for the last hour or so with rika's ring resting on his palm and a heavy heart, there's not much else that it could really be about. it always does come back to rika in some way or the other.
"i'm having a rough night," he admits, although he's sure that much must be obvious by now already. "but it'll be alright sooner or later; it always is. thank you for checking in on me."
« No, no- Yuuta-» Yifei’s words come with a playful, lilting cadence of feigned exasperation, though much of her dramatic flair is ruined by the unmistakable delight in her eyes as she adjusted the camera trying to keep up with het friend. « You have to stay still for the filter to work or else the ears won’t line up with your head, »
yuuta frowns, peering into the camera with his eyebrows furrowing together. "i'm trying," he protests, tilting his head to the side and watching his likeness on the screen move in turn. the filter glitches again and he moves his head to the other side to try and fix it, to no avail. "it's still not working, yi!"
you remind me of a prince charming... or perhaps a knight in shining armour... or maybe both at once?
aw, that's so sweet 🥰 do you really think so?
yes... you very much have those handsomely, fairytale, princely charming vibes. you know the ones that make you feel like you're going to be swept right up off your feet? :)
handsome...?
is it not an objective fact that you are rather handsome? you could ask anyone and they would probably have the same opinion as me.
oh, no, no, i really doubt that, haha. you might be the only one, but i'm very flattered nonetheless. ❤️
no no, i'm sure i'm not the only one. you should ask maki. i'm sure she'll agree with me. :P or even panda, he has eyes. you're a very handsome boy. :)
haha, you think so? they might just agree with you for the sake of agreeing with you. you're a pretty persuasive guy. 😆
when you can't talk, you learn how to use the words that you get your hands on persuasively and concisely. :P i'm sure i could talk all of them into agreeing, but i don't think that's necessary. you're handsome. still an objective fact. :)
...you've gotten to be such a charmer lately, toge, wow. i'm not used to this...
