I'd like to officially invite everyone to the Oklahoma Scenic and Historical Art Exhibit being thrown by me on September, 20th at 6pm. It's 100% free, free baked goods (courtesy of @voodoocakery), free giveaways throughout the event, and Oklahoma based art will be on full display! It will be held at the Old Moore School building built in 1928,abandoned in 1980,then renovated into an amazing structure with beautiful auditorium that is swimming with history and also benefits the entire Moore community. The Old Moore High School In the year 1927 the town of Moore, Oklahoma woke in the middle of the night to a ringing bell signaling a massive fire that claimed the town's school that was built only 6 years prior. The entire community of Moore banded together to help build a new school. The bricks and other materials were pulled from the old school and reused and after a year and a half the new school was finished. The school accomodated grades 1 - 12. It was perfect for the little town at that point in time. But as time marched on the little town of Moore got bigger and bigger and bigger. Around 1960 they decided that the school was going to only hold middle school and elementary children. It stayed that way until 1980 when they closed it down completely. It sat abandoned for nearly 20 years. Now I have covered a lot of schools since I started the Oklahoma Abandoned Project. Every single school I ever went in gave me the same exact thoughts. Why did we let this happen? Why did we waste this potential? Why hasn't the state done something? Why can't we use this building to help our community? For the very first time since I started this project I am happy to announce that the ending of this story is a happy one thanks to Charlie Cotton, his original partner Joe Alexander, and their passion to restore the building. You can find a resturaunt, different types of shops, photography studios, and so many other cool businesses inside of this school now. One of the most heart warming aspects of this renovation is the new owner's decision to keep so much of the original school still in tact. You will find the original lockers still in the walls and the original ceilings above your head. The hall ways are covered in pictures of all of the students who graduated from the school in the past. The auditorium is available to the entire community and all of the local kids as well as the senior alumni who used to attend the school. Everything about this is perfect. That is why I am happy to announce that the old Moore Highschool will be the official location of the Oklahoma Scenic and Historical Art exhibit on September 20th, 2019. Mark your calendar! What happens when somebody actually steps up and does something? When a building that has served it's purpose is decommissioned but instead of being neglected, and forgotten until nature brings it to its demise, it's preserved and actually utilized for the good that it's perfectly capable of bringing a local community? That's the story behind this curtain. Tomorrow morning I'll be releasing a story of a beautiful building built in 1928, left to rot by the state, but saved and re-purposed to bring good to it's local community. This was the very first photo I took when I started my road trip to the panhandle. This was in El Reno, Oklahoma and the sun was finally up enough to give me the lighting I needed. While this grain elevator might look rough, it's certainly not abandoned. It's hard not to take pictures of them because they are usually so photogenic. Last night I transferred all of my photos from the panhandle trip onto my computer. 48 hour trip 29 hours driving 900+ miles 50+ Oklahoma towns 1,578 photos Every photo in this collection along with every photo I've posted over the last 2 days has been taken with my cell phone so that I could update and share real time with you all. I can't wait to share my photos from my professional camera setup with but that might be a few days as I get them prepared. So, I'm finally home and catching some much needed rest. It was such a great trip and I'm so glad I was able to do it. Oklahoma offered up some amazing views and seriously cool architecture. I felt like I was stopping almost every 10 or 15 minutes to photograph something. Until I got to the panhandle... The panhandle was less exciting. The first hour or so I was pretty amazed by the flatness of it but after that hour I started to get bored. Structures, people, and even trees started to get very few and far between. Once I got to the tip of the panhandle around Boise City it started get really really pretty though. The Black Mesa is probably one of, if not the most beautiful part of the state. I look forward to editing all of the photos and sharing them along with all of my experiences and the history of the places I visited.
