“If You’re not afraid to get laid, hit the road.” It is this sentence that introduces an article published in The East Village Other in October 1966. Behind the provocation the newspaper just wanted to warn the thousands of young people who were fleeing the American dream for the enchanted shores of counter-culture. Sex predators and drug dealers could hide behind flowers and love and peace. It had to be said. The underground press warned potential runaways, but the urge to see was often so strong that all the alerts had no effect. How many missing on the roads? How many serial killers have feasted? Probably, we’ll never know.
