Joe? Are you harassing people?
Well, I didn’t think so but that appears to be the prevailing opinion in the world which I find strange. If you’re interested in hearing my point of view, I’d be more than happy to sit down and talk with you.
Joe was convinced that with all the things going on, maybe having joined a pack at all was a bad idea. And Ben’s discussion point could well be that they’d made a mistake. Well, he’d done without a pack before, he could do without one again. If it came to that.
It seemed silly- to lose Ben while trying to protect him.
Maybe they’d run him out of town. Maybe they’d finish the job the Grants started. He wasn’t sure but he’d prefer that to being abjured. If Ben abjured him- he’d never survive it.
He gave Ben a soft smile, memorizing the lines of his face before his sentence was passed. There was something sad and final inside of Joe, hard and breaking. Was this really it?Â
“No, but it’s nice of you to think of it. It’s what makes you a good leader,” he said in a measured and even tone, not trusting his voice so much anymore. Putting his tools down, he looked at Ben for a moment through tired eyes- like there was something he wanted to say but couldn’t.Â
Still, he lead Ben into the house.Â
“Sorry, the whole house is gonna smell like pumpkin pie for awhile,” he said, taking the roasting squash seeds out of the oven and sitting them on top of the range. “I’m afraid I’m nothing more than a basic white wolf. Can I offer you a drink?”
