Lost and found research- Inspiration
This is one of the images Im using for my inspiration, this photo i found quite funny and I definitely decided from this is that I wanted to create an image that might be just as simple and amusing.
This photo reiterated that if I want my final image to be 2 objects attached and working together that both my object and my final location must have similar shapes, The interesting thing about this is that the object that they are using produces its own light which they have edited in. I will consider this if i want to use a object that has the same effect.
In my final image, I could use something really small like in this image, as long as its effective, I need to remember to keep my idea simple so I am able to execute it well, and if I feel I have done then I may experiment with more complex ideas.
I think this image is really effective not only because of the guitar in the background and how detail is lost as it gets closer to the light source, but I also like that there is a call to make this more 'realistic' and sell the story it is telling by giving the person in the image a giant guitar pick.
While this image is absurd it does also sort of make sense, for the object to be where it is, and i really like the idea of my final image working together like this instead of picking two random photos and putting them together.
Same Set- reshoot and behind the scenes
In this set I did a couple things differently, Firstly I used the Bluetooth feature on my phone to take the photos to make sure that I didn't move the camera, this also meant that I was able to zoom into my image to see if it was as sharp as I wanted it to be. I also made filters out of bottle caps for my touch to reduce the amount of light, to make sure I got the highlights I wanted.
This set is also under a desk to completely reduce any lighting that might be coming into the room.

No background lighting however this did involve using a mixture of the pen tool and the quick selection tool
Illusion evaluation
This brief was about exploring surrealism and creating a brand new object, using the same lighting and perspective, It was an exercise in photo manipulation and for me, this was a lot of new things to learn and lots of hours of research.
I found this brief really enjoyable, This was mostly because of the ability to be meticulous, spend time planning my manipulation, and come up with a plan around an object that won't exist until I create it. This also meant that when it came down to optimizing my images I was able to do whatever I felt was best to achieve my idea. A new technique that I had to learn throughout this process was using ‘select and mask’, and then creating a new layer and mask, so creating this image before now would have been impossible for me. This also meant that the research I did into layer masks, selection tools, and how they all work, was incredibly valuable to me. I would like to develop my skills in blending images together and using the selection tools to do so, I think this will be valuable throughout my photography, so I am able to bring in aspects of different images to make my final photo.
For my research, I looked into the works of Christopher McKenny, Martin Roller, and Benjamin Henon, Each for very different reasons, and some of them are very close to what the brief asked for and some are similar photo manipulation techniques in more abstract forms. What I took from each was about their different approaches to lighting, the perspective, what they are showing or not showing in each image, for the viewer to understand. Something that stood out and was always in each of their images, was that the shadows and highlights were always consistent, the objects were either similar shapes or would normally interact with each other in a specific way, and each selection was of an object that had a clear line for them to select, they didn't pick anything that was opened ended like hair or clouds.
The most successful part of my image, thanks to this research was my image blending and bringing both images together, there were shape edges and both were rounded at the top, I was also able to use a reflector to make sure there was light hitting both the edge of the cup and the edge of the can, which made blending the images much easier, due to them having very similar highlights. I think this made my new Can/Mug object much more realistic. The biggest problem I had within this project was my background, I had taken my final images using a colored background which in the end I felt wasn't bold enough so I had to experiment with different colours of what I thought might look good. Another learning curve I went through was trying to keep my lighting consistent between taking photos of the different objects as they were different heights, but also in the final image the ‘Can’ would have to be placed slightly lower into the mug. To get over this I used a reflector to bring out highlands in both objects and I think overall this meant that I had made a much better image than if I had not used one. To also combat my lighting I was continuously checking my images on a computer to see what I might want to change if I felt it wasn't working. If I was to redo this brief I would pick less reflective Objects, I would use a more neutral background, and I would have used a reflector from the start of taking my images. The biggest technical issue I had with this was me accidentally peaking white in my highlights due to the can being so reflective, followed by just having to take my time while optimising my images, as I found it frustrating that I didn't just already know what I was doing.
Research into layer masks and selection tools
'Research the use of layer masks in photoshop'
Using layers in Photoshop is a non-destructive way of editing your image, it also means you are able to bring in pieces from other images by using a selection tool, and placing them on top of the original, edit in what you want or need to complete or correct your work. Any separate layer can be changed at any time which means you are able to keep developing your idea. To layer masks you can either make a duplicate of your current layer by using the short cut 'Command J' or click the right hand button that states 'create new year', layer masks however you take your selection from the right hand side and simply drag it to the tab of another open image, then 'Command T' to move the selection.
'Research the use of selection tools'
Selection tools are used to 'select' parts of an image, this then continues to let you be able to 'Select and mask' where you are able to see more clearly where you are selecting, once you are happy you can make a 'new layer with layer mask' and you are able to bring this onto another image and use your layers. These are incredibly beneficial if you are using a small section of your image, to correct another or if you are creating a new image like for this brief.
The selection tools and what they do.
The selection tool I used was the quick selection tool for this edit, this tool is meant to be easy to use and it is when there is a clear and defined line of the object, but if the object dosent, like a cloud or hair you would either want to correct the selection in the 'select and mask' stage or pick another selection too. Another tool that you could use would be object selection tool, where if you again have a clear and defined object in your image that you are wanting to fully select this tool should be able to accomplish that for you. The 'Magic selection tool' is another option this selects an area based on its colour, so if you are selecting something a bit more abstract this might help. There are other selection tools that aren't automatic, such as the you have the 'lasso tool', that you can make free hand selections with, and draw around bit of the image you want to select, 'polygonal lasso tool' which is similar but makes connection in only straight lines, and finally the 'Magnetic lasso tool', this snaps to the edges of the object that you are drawing around. There is also tools that let you make a selection in their shape, the 'rectangular marquee tool' and the 'elliptical marquee tool.
