Inauspicious Star Lyrics/Gaslight District End Credits Song Theory + Analysis
So, I know I may be late to the theorizing party.. BUT I SWEAR NOONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS.
Because fun fact, the song played at the end credits of the Gaslight District is actually called "Inauspicious Star", composed by Oliver Buckland.
AND I THINK IT HAS LORE SIGNIFICANCE.
Long post ahead ->
I walked upon a melancholy hill While whale song echoed from the chasm deep The weight of family bond cementing still The secrets our fathers chose to keep
Now "melancholy hill" is a direct reference to Mel, whose full name is literally "Melancholy Hill" (like the Gorillaz song), while the "whale song" could be referring to The Whale Belly Butcher Shop.
For the third and fourth lines, it could be referring to how Ken had to cement several of his employees due to them finding out about Mel's secret, and his heavily implied agreement with Temperance, in regards to Mel.
We drown our vulgar truths beneath the tide And lance the boils that fester in the dark The trust we place in blood has been belied The soul adrift without a guiding mark
First verse is obviously about cementing, not much to say there, and the last two verses is about Mel again, with how she's needed to conceal her black blood (because belie means to disguise or contradict) and how she's only one who can actually (and permanently) die in The Gaslight District, lacking the mark of The Black Hand.
But the in between verses are a very interesting rodeo,
To "lance a boil", in a literal sense is to cut open a boil with a scalpel or a lance, which is gross but fitting for TGD, but in a metaphorical sense means "to take decisive action to resolve a difficult situation or problem"
I believe this is referring to how at the end of the TGD Pilot, the main cast must think of a way to evade their little situation having been caught with the normal angel egg hatching too early. However, I feel like this could also refer with more difficult decisions in the future, with Mel's secret getting harder and harder to keep hidden, and being forced to confront more difficult situations.

A ship of family now unrigged adrift Conceals a cargo of unspoken shame The veil between our world begins to lift As we bear witness to a butcher's game (Do note that in the pilot, this is where the song cuts off ^)
(This is where my theory comes in, where I theorize that this song foreshadows the next major events/episodes of The Gaslight District.)
I believe this might refer to how The Smiling Dead might have to go on the run, with how, in the post-credits, we find out those who claim false reports or sightings of the angel-egg human will be sentenced to various acts of violence from The Gaslight District.
I'm not 100% sure about the "unspoken shame" referred to here, but it could potentially be referring to either Ken or Mel, who, for Mel, may be guilty for bringing The Smiling Dead into this situation, or for Ken, who is heavily implied to have a rough past of sorts that would ignite some kind of guilt or shame in him, one involving Temperance.
To support this ^ in this teaser for The Gaslight District, we see Mel aboard a ship of sorts, surrounded by two angels. (There is a chance I may be wrong on this one however)
The third line could be referring to how Mel's "day of destiny" will arrive soon. Where Mel will lead an army of angels to destroy entire The Gaslight District, and also perhaps heaven. Its been theorized by other folks in the community that Mel will bring forth a new era of humanity of sorts, destroying the current world so it can be reborn anew.
Now I don't know what "a butcher's game" could mean. All I know is that its probably referring to Ken the Butcher. Feel free to drop your own theory in the reblogs, i'd be happy to discuss.
The whispered lies of "they've abandoned you" Eclipse the truths that burn within our soul "I'm all you have" both false... and darkly true Our minds that struggle to stay whole
Now this part is purely my speculation
I feel like this trying to tell us that Mel will be "abandoned" at some point, or perhaps thought to be abandoned with the second and third lines making it seem like this abandonment is enough to shatter her morale enough that it "eclipses" the truth that she wasn't abandoned, hence the line "both false... and darkly true" (notice how there is a pause in the middle, almost in a sense that Mel realizes the dark truth)
Unless per chance you come to me again Mine own escape unfoldeth to my hope Entwineded life and death beyond our ken Immortal in our brief and bitter scope
Some things I noticed because I have no theories on this:
"ken" is probably NOT referring to Ken, but rather the word's meaning, "knowledge/wisdom"
I think this verse is Ken talking to Mel(?)
Perhaps referring to the finale
Anyway, that's all for my analysis.
Give me your thoughts, theories, and comments and tell me if I missed anything of interest!
