QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: I saw that your Japanese debut single album reached #1 in reservations at Tower Records. Is your preparation for advancement into Japan going well? ZICO: There were a lot of regretful things about the local showcase that we had not that long ago, so we started to feel like we’d need to do even better. It was a concert that created a lot of various thoughts. Usually we end without a lot of lingering feelings, but this time there was an unusually large number of things we regretted.

Q: I’m curious if there’s anything you do differently to prepare for overseas promotions versus domestic promotions. ZICO: I do have some experience studying in Japan, but I’ve spent way more time in Korea, so by now I’ve forgotten almost all the Japanese I knew. These days I’ve started studying it again. If you plan to promote in another place I think it’s important to be competent in the language.

Q: You spoke earlier about a regretful concert, but I’m curious about what constitutes a successful stage to each of you. ZICO: I think that Block B’s music is always changing. Because we didn’t really have any say in our music until we released our second album, there were a lot of restrictions on us making the kind of music that we wanted to make. We really started making our own kind of music with ‘Nalina,’ which we directly produced.

Q: We can’t not talk about Block B’s fanclub BBC. Even when Block B was suffering so many unfortunate incidents during that time, the fans were always there. It seems like they have an incredible loyalty, even more than other fanclubs. ZICO: It does seem kind of like that. Aren’t schoolteachers usually a little kinder with the students who avoid trouble the most? Shall we call it a love-hate relationship? Now that our primer is flaking off, our fans think, 'If I don’t take responsibility for these kids, then who will?’ and they keep us close to their hearts.

Q: Honestly, people who don’t know Block B well might have some prejudices towards them and there might be times when you’re overlooked. Don’t those things make you uncomfortable? ZICO: We can acknowledge that there have been a lot of prejudices that have arisen because of our mistakes. We’ve heard often that we have no manners. Of course there have been misunderstandings, but we have to take responsibility for having made people think that way. But to the extent that people say we have no manners, I want to say that we did not intend to become that kind of artist. With regards to our mistakes, if we apologize with certainty and show ourselves to be hard-working people, I think that people will understand that as well.

Q: When you look at articles about Block B, the word 'hooligan’ seriously comes out a lot. I don’t know if that’s the kind of word that would become repugnant through repetition. How is it? ZICO: It seems like that’s become our trademark, so I do like it, but the fact that that can sometimes put limitations on our music is a little regretful. Because we’re not just singers that do hip-hop.

Q: Do you have any new years resolutions? ZICO: First of all, I want to earn more money than I did this year. And I’m trying hard not to lose my tension as time passes. Even just 1 year ago, my heart was focused on doing just one thing, but these days it feels like things have become a little looser, whether that’s a relief or a misfortune. Of course it would be nice to have some freedom, but I’ve also realized the method for avoiding laziness. So now I’m trying to find the me of before.
