It stormed today. I sat outside with a cup of coffee and a book. It was so nice.

This minizine is a collection of short essays. Most of it is self-reflection, as fits a perzine. This one is from 2016; I wonder what, if anything, about the author’s thoughts has changed since then.

The author’s zine aesthetic includes a lot of black-and-white collage. The result is a zine that is pretty both to look at and to read. I think this is one of the first zines I ever got in a trade.

Issue #9 of All in Your Head Zine - WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED: Perspectives by Queer Disabled Black Indigenous People of Color All in Your Head is a queer/feminist traditional cut-and-paste style zine with a focus on LGBTQIA+ neurodivergent and disabled activists, zinesters, artists, and authors, sponsored by GlitterWurst Zine Distro. Our zine operates on the following *principles: 1.) social inequality and injustice exists [racism, classism, ableism, heterosexism, cissexism to name a few]; 2.) disability, neurodiversity can be understood as a viable form of human difference that intersects with/is shaped by systems of dominance; 3.) claims that there is a “normal” bodymind can have damaging and harmful effects (physically/emotionally/spiritually) and are partly shaped by current social/cultural values and white western colonial histories; 4.) neuroqueer and disabled people must navigate cultural taboos, move among complex institutions and systems of care and negotiate conflicting ideas of “wellness/illness,“ “silence/disclosure,” “visibility/invisibility;” “dis/ability” and more 5.) most importantly, our stories matter. I'm interested in 1970s zines that mention asexuality! I'm really excited to learn that there's some form of asexual history that predates AVEN!

Im glad you are, and i can definetly point you in that direction!

So basically something you have to keep in mind is the mentions of asexuality by name are sparse; they exist but theyre sparse. Part of the reason is for a long time, until sometime in the 90s i believe, asexuality was considered part of bisexuality because “bisexual” was often defined as “neither straight or gay.” Most zines you will find that specifically cover asexuality by name are from the 90s onward, and mostly in the early 2000s.

So i guess what im trying to say is your ask means there’s gonna be a lot of different links for different things. I can point you to scans of queer zines that mention asexuality by name from the 70s, but it will be a light read. There is, however, many other resources for 1) reading queer zines, 2) reading zines about asexuality, 3) seeing asexuality included in queer history, 4) reading about the history of asexuality, but they will be all different sources!

Hello! I’m not on Tumblr much, but I’m Olivia M and I gave the talk yesterday at the Ace & Aro Conference in NYC! (Thanks ACES NYC and AVEN and the Grace Institute for making it possible!) I don’t think the footage has been uploaded yet, but it was in fact recorded. The talk was titled “Ace and Aro Zines as Community History and Community Building” and discussed zines and diy self published works from as far back as the early 70s.

I will be writing up my findings (with lots of images and full citations) in a zine and a series of blog posts on the Ace Zine Archive website (which I co-founded) eventually, which will be more comprehensive than the talk, but here’s some of what I talked about yesterday:

In terms of publications that were explicitly known as (fan)zines, mentions date back to the mid 80s. One popular 1990 zine’s poll of over 300 responses revealed 1% IDed as asexual (2% celibate) and another in 1997 polled said 2% asexual (which was listed using the words “sexual orientation” out of 620 responses. The others I talked about were diy self published magazines mostly from the lgbt/queer and feminist communities that were zines in all but name. Most alluring to me were the mentions in queercore and riot grrrl zines, some of which I could only get access to by both visiting the physical zine library and getting scans of them (and tracked down the authors to ask for permission to reprint from them, but not all have replied yet. Still, I’ve seen the scans.)

Surprisingly, most of the oldest explicit support and affirmation of asexuality was in early lesbian feminist magazines. The definition was in flux, but was often written about as comparable to other sexualities. One article from the early 70s from such a magazine (on bisexuality and avoiding bi stereotypes) called for the lesbian community to make it easier for bisexual and asexual women to identify as lesbians. Many similar early 70s publications listed asexuality in lists of orientations and differentiated it from celibacy. I even found a speech from a lesbian feminist conference in 1973 that called out and condemned how people treat asexual and celibate women as if they are sick or perverted. Those were the actual words used. Sick. Perverted.

There’s more, and I’m still researching. But good things will come to those who wait.

P.S. - Most of what I found is from the relatively small amount of materials that are digitized and publicly available. I’m not university affiliated, so my options are limited, yet I’ve found so much! This is literally the tip of the iceberg.

Technophilia: A Transhumanist Zine // Call For Submissions! Issue #4

Transhumanism (H+) a movement aiming to transform the human condition by utilizing technology to enhance intellectual, physical, or psychological capabilities.

What does this mean in the context of humanity’s future? Is transhumanism “gentrification of the human body”? What type of enhancements will be available or mandated to the disabled and disenfranchised? What does this mean for the definition of gender, sexuality, or queerness? What repercussions will this have on mental health? What ways might new advancements serve to enforce, or deconstruct, power? How will this adversely or positively affect social norms and the politically oppressed? What will be the environmental impact or economic effects?

Submissions accepted in the form of poetry, short story, comic, & images.

There are no limits in subject matter; as long as it can be tied to the idea of transhumanism.

QUEER LATINOS AND YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE ZINE

Here is a Zine I made for class about queer Latinos in YA. It touches on Chicano/Latino history as well as overall Queer Lit. It’s not perfect and it mainly focuses on cisgender Chicano/Puerto Rican characters but that’s mainly due to the lack of representation. Anyway, take a look!

Call for submissions to The Language of Pride Zine

What it is: a zine that explores the words we use to define ourselves and what those words mean to us.

This issues topic: exploring the use of umbrella terms within multiple communities and what they mean to the people that use them.

Words/Acronym examples: queer, LGBT, LGBTQIA, QTPOC, MOGAI, trans, nonbinary, etc.

Who can participate: Though I have no way of screening for it, TERFS/transmeds/exclusionists need not apply. Other then that, if you are LGBT+, queer, or any subset of something related to that you are welcome to participate! And yes! I include intersex in this!

Type of content accepted: Any kind of art in any media is welcome! This included things like collages, paintings, sketches, comics, photography, etc. you can also submit poems, short stories and thought pieces if you want!

Where to submit my piece: please submit to [email protected] if possible. If you are unable to submit via e-mail you can submit your piece over tumblr.

Anonymous submissions: yes this zine will accept anonymous submissions! (I definitely understand the need for them) If you wish to be anonymous please submit to the blog rather then the e-mail provided.

Deadline: all submissions must be in to me by MAY 30. You may submit your piece earlier but I will not be accepting any later then that.

I recently got this zine - “(meta)paradox #6: The Brainweird Issue” - in a trade and really enjoyed it! The artist, Olivia (ParadoxNowCreations on Etsy), writes so eloquently and insightfully about her own mind and her neurodivergences; I really relate to a lot of her writing. It’s super long (23,500 words!) but I finished it in like two days, which is unusually speedy for me. I love seeing other Autistic folk write candidly about their Autistic traits in this way. I love her writings on Autistic/vampire comparisons, her views on ‘pure thought’, and her explanation of personal rules that can’t be broken and the difficulties these can bring. There’s also a cute little glossary of terms in the back! If you’re Autistic, or otherwise neurodivergent, I definitely recommend you buy (or trade for) this brilliant zine.

Along with this, she also sent me her zines “Anecdata #7″ and “Nostalgia Whiplash #1: The Internet of 2005-2007″, both of which were a great joy to read. “Anecdata #7″ is a real classic perzine, with some really cool zine recommendations. I love reading perzines, it’s just like reading a blog but with the added joy of a handmade zine! I relate strongly to her empathy with plants. And “Nostalgia Whiplash #1″ was really sweet to read and took me back to that time, even though our experiences are slightly different. It’s weird to think about how, even though strong friendships and memories were formed on them, most of those early websites are either vanished or abandoned now.
