You should ask random people who have never seen your website, especially on mobile, to browse around your website. Give them little scenarios like “make an enquiry” of perhaps find my services pages. Watching your friends browse around your site and learning from their experience could provide your and your business key insights into your overall user experience that your customers are also experiencing. Quite often, I am asked "What is a quality backlink" in an SEO context? However, links were around well before SEO was even considered. Links are an important component of how the internet works. Without them, you wouldn't be able to (or at least not so easy) browse to valuable content you need on demand. I have worked on a website where the owners would enter these Persian & exotic cats into shows and most of the time, won. They had an average website, not much to look at, outdated, did not work on mobile, however, they had their cat named "Ruby" which would win many shows they entered her in. They obtained hundreds of links from relevant and authoritative resources because of their passion for these types of cats. No link-building strategies, no outreach efforts, just a cat that was so cute, people linked to her due to her award-winning status. In their Google Analytics reporting, the majority of their traffic was referral-based from these show-based websites. They had hundreds and hundreds of visitors from websites that linked to their Ruby page. Small clip from our recent podcast where James wants to improve his personal brand using traditional SEO strategies. My advice is that it is really a content marketing and thought leadership game. Consistency and patience is required and continuous content creation based on what your target market is actively searching for is key to build any personal or commercial brand. My simplest and favourite content marketing strategy is as follows: 1. Keyword research what your customers are asking for. 2. Build a lengthy written article covering a range of topics in your article. Around 1500 words or more is recommended. Keeping in mind content depth is more important than content length. 3. Create a YouTube video and embed that into your article with images etc. 4. Run social media ads from Facebook to your blog article. 5. Use Google a Search Console and quickly get the content indexed. If it’s not indexed there is no chance it will rank. Speed is everything in SEO. 6. Promote your content to relevant sites requesting links and providing reasons why they should link to the article. During our last podcast discussion, James Wrigley and I discussed SEO strategies to build his personal brand, and in particular, developing content marketing blog articles from suggestions from Google itself. Below I have shown two graphs from Google Analytics where I put the same strategy (with a few differences) into place and developed a holistic SEO strategy that generates links to the articles and improves the overall user experience. This is a very niche B2B industry with below-average search volumes due to the nature of the industry. The top picture shows all SEO growth from 78 visits per month to over 4,600. The bottom picture shows blog landing page visits from Google and Bing. We started with 0 visits to increasing to nearly 3,000 per month from our BLOG alone.
