Three Thirds Make a Whole... Record!

Three Thirds is very excited to announce the upcoming release of our first record of originals: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!. With funds from performances, educational concerts, and merchandise sales, we have completed the recording and initial production for Oh!. But now we need your help! We are launching an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to help us pay for printing costs, compensation for our local team of expert collaborators: Brian Saia (mixing), Clay Chaplin (mastering), and Saul Alpert-Abrams (graphic design), and a publicity campaign for the album in the months before the release. The Watt From Pedro Show

Yesterday we perform on the Watt form Pedro Show, the podcast of Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges). Here, we banter with Mike, jam with Brother Matt, and play a few tunes of our own. Mike takes a liking to Jake's bass playing and then calls our vocal harmonies "sock-tight." Thanks for the kind words and for having us on the show, Mike and Brother Matt!

Song A Day For A Month

Hey world, last month this band collectively wrote over 100 songs and uploaded them on a website that Alex started: songadayforamonth.com. Hill House Residency (wk 3)

In our last week, we turned up the dial on our studio sessions. We recorded live with no click and very little overdubbing, allowing for the quirks and imperfections of our playing to come out. i.e. Alex's accidental B7 flat 9 chord on the last Rev. E. Mitchell verse, Heather's impassioned vocal squeak on the third chorus of Lady Friend. Some of the song arrangements were being reinvented right before their recording. On the morning we record The 5, we spontaneously give it a Just Intonation makeover and add an extra flat 'septimal' seventh in the descending line. We're so excited to share these songs that we aren't even going to wait until their mixed. Here's two:

While Jake and Claire were making dinner one night, they had a sudden realization of highly improbable proportion. Unbeknownst to them, they knew each other in high school! (Backstory: Jake is from Utah; Claire, from Iowa). They discovered that for two weeks in the summer of 02', they had attended the same music camp in Ohio. Amazed at their intersecting teenage past, Jakes says "For years I haven't had to deal with my adolescence and now, sitting across the dinner table, there's this avatar of potentially embarrassing memories". Fortunately, they only had good things to say about their childhood selves. Claire remembers Jake as the quiet kid who performed a hilarious rendition of "This Is Halloween," from the movie The Nightmare before Christmas. Jake remembers Claire as the focused, nonchalant, short-haired girl who introduced him to Sonic Youth and who played in a band that she claimed sounded like Pavement. They hadn't talked until grad school and even then, it took 3 years at CalArts, 1 year of playing in the same band, and 3 weeks in a cabin for them to come to this realization. Alex and Heather tried to see if they had a similar story but figured out that Alex wasn't even born when Heather was in high school.

                       On our final afternoon, we performed at the Hill House for the ISLAND crew: Amanda, Brad, Justin, and their little ones. Here was got a chance to showcase what we'd been working on these past three weeks. We decided against Lady Friend, however, because we didn't want to scare any children. Instead, we played 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'. After the set, there was cider, cheese, whiskey, good conversation. 

It was really nice to get to know the people who made the residency possible for us. We would like to extend a big thanks to Yvonne, Jen, Amanda, Brad, and Jason for being so accommodating and for making us feel a part of the ISLAND family. All in all, the experience that they gave us will have a great impact on our relationship as a band and on ourselves as individual artists for a long time in the future. Thanks, ISLAND. Hope to be back again one day!
