Peyton is a coffee addict, with unfortunate side effects. Too many espressos, and Peyton is prone to oversharing, and not enough coffee may just bring out a snappy, irritable side to her. Her coffee preferences are as follows. 

Espresso: Served without sugar, but with a glass of sparkling water that she drinks beforehand. Yes, she takes her espresso seriously. 

Cappuccino: One sugar. Chocolate sprinkles. 

Black coffee: Only ever consumed as a hangover cure and with a glass of alka-seltzer to follow. The alka-seltzer is something she picked up from living with Ravi. 

Mocha: Over her dead body. 

Latte: Only as a torture method. Or to disguise a very badly made coffee.

OK, so I’m not a Paine shipper. But can we talk about that scene in last night’s episode? 

I think it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a show discuss enthusiastic, informed consent so clearly, so beautifully. See, it’s where a lot of shows fall short. They’ll discuss consent, but usually, it only comes up in relation to storylines that involve rape. And if the first, or only, time you discuss consent is in relation to rape, then you’re already failing the discussion.  What iZombie posed us with last night was a scenario where Peyton not only took the lead, but Blaine was willing to bring things to a halt whilst they ironed out concerns he had. Concerns that, even though this would be a scenario that Peyton initiated, it could be a scenario that she might regret. He recognised that his memories reappearing could be a deal breaker for Peyton,  “If I’m still me, we can do this later if you still want. If I’m not, you won’t have to regret this.” 

As he said, quite rightly, the old Blaine wouldn’t have cared. But he does care now, enough to ensure that Peyton is entering this on a basis that gives her enough time to consider whether this is what she really wants. Blaine knows that, being who he is, this could have negative consequences - emotionally - for Peyton. He also, likely, realises that her finding out who he was after they first slept together brought up negative emotions. Guilt, Betrayal. And although she consented, it wasn’t healthy, informed consent. As she pointed out to Liv. She never would have slept with Blaine, had she known who she was. 

The old Blaine was capable of some heinous things. But this episode proved that his old ways are not inevitable. He knows what his past self was like, and although he’s not trying to refuse himself any happiness, he’s already actively trying to make sure that the Blaine he is now is a better person than the Blaine he was then.
