Making her way steadily through the forest, Emma barely paid any mind to her surroundings beyond the path she was following. She needed to get through the trees before nightfall if she wanted to reach the inn in time, and her delayed morning hadnât helped at all. All was peaceful, the only sounds coming from the rustling branches and the small animals and birds that called the forest home, until a man burst through the brush ahead of her, looking like heâd been in a fight.
âYouâd turn around if you knew what was good for ya, lass,â the man warned, barely stopping to look her over. âHeâs worse than the stories say!â
âWho-?â Emma tried to ask, curiosity more than anything else filling her. But the man continued back towards the village, ignoring her.
Knowing she didnât have the time to turn around or find a different path through, Emma continued on. She wasnât afraid of who this mysterious man was. She posed no immediate threat to anyone in any situation, but she could defend herself if need be.
It didnât take long for her to find him, his voice calling her out before she could see him. She hadnât exactly been hiding her approach. Pulling the hood of her cloak down and smoothing it out over her shoulders, Emma stepped out into the clearing.
Eyes widened upon seeing the man, obviously injured, but recognizing him instantly. Her mother had told her the stories of the Huntsman when she was younger over and over again at her request. There was no way she wouldnât recognize this man, covered in leather and furs, to be him.
âYouâre hurt,â was the first thing she said to him, eyes trained on the blood on his brow as she moved towards him.
The woman who stepped out from the tress was not what he had expected. She looked familiar, even if he was sure they had not met before. She was not obviously carrying a weapon, though he doubted anyone would be reckless to enough to travel the forest completely unarmed. The kingdom may finally be at peace, and the rule of law was fairly enforced by the monarchs, however the forest still provided a home to bandits and thieves..
He could swear she was looking at him with recognition, but no one who knew he was would stand there so calmly. Whether it was with anger or fear, it did not take long for those who knew of him to show him whether things were likely to get violent, or if they would just cower until he went on his way.
He stepped back when she moved forward, adjusting his grip on his knife, he knew better than to dismiss her as a threat just because she looked harmless. So had Snow White. âAye. But do not think that will give you the advantage.â
He could not judge her intentions and that put him on edge. Her accent and the quality of her clothing despite its simplicity, showed that she was well bred and not one who would be expected to be wandering the woods alone. And that made her a mystery, something he was not comfortable with.
