I learned a while ago via a Merlin fanfic (and a couple google search results afterwards) that medieval peasants would break a coin in half and exchange it with their betrothed instead of exchanging rings for marriage.
Merlin and Arthur are constantly referred to as two sides of the same coin.

arthur brainrot so look away but i cant believe arthur is one of those people who literally wants to escape. like hes one of those people who just wants a simple quiet life. he literally dreams about leaving the life he has to live away from everything. hes the destined king meant to win legendary battles and fight impossible foes and bring about a golden age of change and his whole story is riddled with tragedy and adventure and unbelievable achievements and he just. he just wants to live on a farm by the lake or near the mountains. hes literally. he DOESNT WANT TO BE THE HERO. he doesnt want that. he just. he just wants quiet and contentment and to be with the people he loves.
and the person that's always there is Merlin. Like merlin is there, Arthur doesn't even need to think about it. I'm dead.

Headcanons of Merlin and his magic
(And other magic and merlin related stuff)
Merlin’s magic makes him warm to the touch but he’s always cold
He always got sick when he was young because his magic couldn’t fit inside his body so it made him ill to cope
Being a dragonlord gives him certain immunity to regular fire and complete immunity to fire spells
He unconsciously knows how to speak languages of the old religion and used to speak it frequently as a child
He's immune to any harmful magical spells
His magic didnt only make him immortal, but when he became fully realized he stopped ageing
Animals (predator and prey) dont react to him because they see him as part of the core of nature. To them, he's as natural as wind. He had to actively tone down his magic to make them react to his presence, he does it unconsciously now.
He can shapeshift into any animal
He likes spicy food.
He hates hunting not only cuz he hates killing innocent animals but because he could feel the magic leave the animal and return to the earth.
He used to bring back animals to keep as pets when he was little. Hunith had to draw the line when he brought back a bear. Bears arent even native to Essetir!
Merlin can feel the difference between magic that died and magic that left.
Everytime magic was purged from a magical area it would store inside Merlin until it could be restored to the land.
Magic is kinda like energy, it cannot be created or destroyed but transform into one form or another and Merlin is basically every converted magic that had no one where to go
I have discovered that I don't like when fanfics have Arthur react badly to a magic reveal and then continue to have him be insensitive/rude/mean/discriminatory towards Merlin afterwards.
Of course, Arthur canonically reacts negatively to Merlin's magic reveal, but he comes around fairly quickly and the real issue was the deception rather than the magic.
Sometimes I'll read a fic and Arthur will be incredibly stubborn about magic being bad to the point where it's out of character. He had lost his mother to magic, but he still wanted to see the good in it when Uther was dying. Even after Uther died, he wanted to see the good in magic to save Mordred. He's always tried to consider the alternative.
Season 2, Episode 08 - "The Sins of the Father" "What if my father's attitude towards magic is wrong? Perhaps it's not as simple as he would have us believe. Surely not everyone who practices magic can be evil."
Season 5, Episode 05- "The Disir" "Perhaps my father was wrong, perhaps the old ways aren't as evil as we thought."
If it was the magic that bothered him in canon, he would've reacted far different. For example:
Arthur just watched Merlin (possibly) kill those two men. He watched his best friend and the person he trusted most use magic for violence; this is what magic is falsely associated with, but Merlin potentially confirms it in front of Arthur.
If the problem was the magic, he probably would've said something more along the lines of Merlin being a bad person or a monster. Instead he's far more focused on the fact that Merlin lied to him.
I don't mind if characters in fanfics are out of character sometimes, but I guess in this case, since it leads to Arthur being horrible to Merlin, it bothers me. It's an added reason to make him be cruel to him when there's plenty of reason there for a negative reaction already.
Maybe I'm just a snob or overly sensitive, but I guess an inaccurate portrayal of Arthur in magic reveal situations gets under my skin for some reason.
