B SIDES - Late Chuck Berry
Shit Chuck Berry, you really shouldn't have gotten caught having sex with that 14 year old Apache waitress back in December of 1959. Seems he was transporting her across state lines to work as a hat check girl for his shows too. Big deal. He didn't let his three year prison sentence keep him from the spotlight when he got out however, in '63 he released "No Particular Place To Go," "You Never Can Tell" and "Nadine." All were Top 20 singles.
"San Francisco Dues" came out 8 years later and "Bio" 2 years after that. He slowed down a bit and changed labels a couple of times but was still writing hits. Though mostly straight blues, both records are defined by Berry's playful style, a great backing band and that infallible early 70's Chess studio sound. He even snuck in a little poetry - don't miss "My Dream."
Here's a few from each...
San Francisco Dues - 1971
Oh, Louisiana
Your Lick
My Dream (Poem)
Bio - 1973
Woodpecker
Annie Lou
Me And My Country

GOODBOY: SAN FRANCISCO DUES - THE B SIDES - Get more of the good stuff...
These handsome gentlemen were indeed two brothers from a musical family based out of Powderly, Kentucky. With their harmony laden blend of country, pop and bluegrass soul they helped pave the way for nearly every mainstream hit with even the faintest of hillbilly twang. Don and Phil can sit in and play at set at my bar whenever they damn well please.
The first track on S.F. Dues was taken from a 1970 performance at the Grand Hotel available on the "Chained To A Memory" collection of their recordings - I don't usually like live recordings because of the lack of fidelity / creative input from the producer and engineers but this set really cooks. Here's some more highlights...
- Mama Tried
- 'Til I Kissed You
- Maybelline
- Susie Q + Hey Jude
- Love Is Strange
