The both of them using their powers against shigeo..

deep down they know they don’t want to hurt him, but they’ve convinced themselves that it’s the only choice they have.

they both made themselves think this is what they wanted all along while they deny the their true feelings (serizawa doesn’t really want to hurt anyone, ekubo doesn’t really care about becoming a god anymore)

also ekubo did all this because he realized that if he doesn’t carry out his dream of becoming a god, he has no reason to live, and so he will pass on. serizawa thinks that without protecting toichiro, he has no reason to live. they were both holding onto a purpose, something to keep going even if what they were doing was wrong
