in ur opinion, do u think the show will be successful? ive never been this early to a fandom and i just really want the show to run for many years
Hi! First of all, welcome to the fandom!
The show’s success will depend on a lot of things.
1) Popularity of the books - the book has only been out for a year or so, which in my opinion is too short a time to release an adaptation of. Although the book is popular, it isn’t insanely popular to have a massive fan base yet. For example, the first ‘The Hunger Games’ book came out in 2007, and the movie came out in 2012. In that whole five years, ‘The Hunger Games’ became insanely popular, and garnered a massive fan base, which is the main reason for the film’s success. The book fan’s were what propelled the movie franchise forward. In my opinion, the book hasn’t got a big enough fan base for the show to excel in ratings.
2) The network the show will be aired on — as mentioned in a previous post, it has been announced that E! will be airing the show on their network. E! is most known for its reality shows like ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ — VERY different from ‘One Of Us Is Lying’ which is a murder mystery… It’s hard to predict the outcome of the show based on this. If the show had been picked up by Netflix or The CW - or even Freeform - the show would be in safer hands, as these networks have experience on making shows like these.
3) The quality of the show — this kind of links in with the previous point, but if the show is messily made, with bad writing and bad acting, I wouldn’t expect many people to stick around for the whole season. Which is why I am worried about E! having the rights of the show, because they have never made a show like this.
4) There is only one book — it will be hard to have multiple seasons if they follow the books, because there is only one book to base it on. If they were to make more seasons, they would have to make new storylines and plot lines, which may be difficult. The writers would need to do a good job, and it should be worth making another season. If not, people will stop watching and fans of the book especially may not enjoy it. But like I said, it depends on the quality of the show. My worry is that the show might turn out like ‘Pretty Little Liars’ where there were new seasons for no reason, and they began to make stuff up that didn’t make sense. After season 4/5 of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ the show went downhill because it stopped beginning to make sense.
5) Worldwide influence — E! is only a major network in the US and UK, really. International fans may not be able to watch the show, and will hence watch illegally or something. Netflix could pick up the show for global audiences, like they’ve done for ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Shadowhunters’. In the US, ‘Riverdale’ airs on The CW, but the rest of the world can watch it on Netflix as a Netflix Original Series. In the US, ‘Shadowhunters’ airs on Freeform, but the rest of the world can watch it on Netflix as a Netflix Original Series. The more people watch the show (across the globe) the more successful the show will be.
I know this is a bit long, but I think all these points will be relevant in terms of how successful the show is. In my personal opinion, I don’t think the show will be hugely successful, mainly due to the fact that E! will be airing the show, but also because the fan base isn’t that big.
Obviously, it is too early to make predictions; we will have to wait and see what happens — perhaps the fan base will grow, perhaps the show might be of good quality. Who knows? I think we should try to be positive, and be hopeful! Stick around to find out more! We’re in for a long ride. I hope this helps!
