“How you doing?”

How have you been feeling lately? Are you taking care of yourself? Are you making time for yourself?

Self-care is super important and I believe that most college students are unaware of this.

Yes, its important to make sure that your taking care of all your responsibilities and what not but, its more important to make sure that your relaxing too!

My relaxation = watching Friends on Netflix! Episodes are only 30 minutes and this show is guaranteed to make you laugh and smile (sometimes cry depending on the episode).

I’m on season 7 and I am hooked!

Another good de-stressor = exercising! This can also be a 30 minute thing to take your mind off of school just for a little (go to the gym, yoga, pilates, etc.)

Keep in mind, there is no right way for self-care. That’s the funny thing about self-care; you don’t have to do anything! People put self-care into their schedules as a “forced” thing. Then they feel tired out from it, and forget the fun stuff.

Sometimes, all you need is a hug to make it through the day :)

Take the time to do something for yourself. It’s not selfish to do what you need to make yourself feel better.

You Don’t Want To Be Homeless!

If you don’t already know, room selection has begun for next year…do you know where your living?

Each student will receive an email with an appointment time to make your room selection.

There are three steps: 1. Pay your housing deposit before your appointment! 2. Make sure you get your housing key by completing the license agreement. 3. Simply pick your room! Either at or after your appointment time.

Did you know there was more to this glorious Irish holiday than consuming massive amounts of alcohol?!

Have you ever wondered what the story of St. Patrick’s Day is?!

1. Why March 17?

March 17 is the death date of Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint.

2. First parade

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City.

There are 34.7 million U.S. residents with Irish ancestry. This number is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself.

4. Shamrock

5. Leprechaun

Leadership Education and Development, a.k.a LEAD, is a campus program that provides students the opportunity to explore leadership.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting with Elise Cain, the coordinator of the leadership program at SUNY Oneonta, and she gave me tons of info on LEAD Credit and what it actually is.

*LEAD CREDIT: given out to students at events with educational goals that are consistent with the following leadership outcomes-

· Balancing Independence & Collaboration

· Career Path

· Critical Thinking

· Effective Communication

· Healthy Behavior

· Leadership Development

· Meaningful Interpersonal Relationships

· Media Literacy

· Personal Competency/Confidence

*Three levels to LEAD Credit- silver, gold and platinum! As students complete a leadership level they will receive certificates and other forms of recognition, like pretty colored cords for graduation. Completion of a leadership level will be recognized on campus as a kind of credential that can be used when running for office, applying for STEP funding, writing a resume, etc.

*About 1 in 4 students participate in the program & 386 students have completed a level before graduating (the number is anticipated to be higher!)

*BTW TO TRANSFER STUDENTS: LEAD Credit can be transferred from your previous school. So, if you were in a club or attended a conference at your other school, talk to Elise Cain about transferring those babies over here!

*You can check your LEAD Credit status on Campus Connection and you can join the LEAD organization to get emailed updates on LEAD credit deadlines, conferences, and important info.

*LEADERSHIP MENTOR: students have been hired to have drop-in hours to answer any questions in regards to the LEAD program. WOW, WE’RE IN FEBRUARY ALREADY! That’s right, we are in the month of February and time is flying by! I’m already thinking about summer

It’s around that time where some of you may be looking for a job and/or an internship.I just so happen to also work at the Career Development Center (CDC) and know a lot when it comes to finding a job/internship, handling your tax forms, and building your resume.

Yes, I am a woman of many talents, I know.

DRAGONLINK!

DragonLink is the CDC online job management system. If you are looking for a job on or off campus this will be your first place to look.

The tricky part about DragonLink, is logging on. I’ll give you a hint now on how to make that an easy process. Your username will be your typical Oneonta email address and your password will be…nothing! Because you have to click “Forgot Password” to set up a new one or use the password given to you in your “Student Welcome Email.”

If you continue to run into issues, just give the CDC a call or shoot them an email, someone will be able to assist you…and it will most likely be me :)

Feel free to make an appointment with CDC counselor, Anna Legname, Student Employment Coordinator, to assist you with your job search!

Internships can also be found through DragonLink! There are four different types of internships; paid, unpaid, formal (has specific descriptions and contracts), and informal (does not have set schedules or contracts). There are a few things to keep in mind when searching for an internship:

- Must have junior status

- 2.0 GPA overall and in major

- Pass the CWE (College Writing Exam)

Feel free to make an appointment with CDC counselor, Megan Scrivener, Internship Counselor, to assist you with your internship needs! (She is currently out on maternity leave but will be back in March).

RESUMES:

The CDC offers a resume/cover letter critiquing service that all students should really take advantage of. If you hand in your resume to the office→ we will then assign it to a counselor→ who will then go over it and make notes (critiques) → then you’ll receive an email notifying you that your resume is ready to be picked up. You can hand your resume in up to 3 times to be critiqued and it takes about 3-5 days to be completed. Go try it out!

ORIENTATION LEADER POSITIONS AVAILABLE NOW!

Welcome back to the returning Oneontans and Welcome to our new students this semester!

I hope everyone has had a smooth transition into this semester, whether it be moving into a new residence hall or starting your new classes, I hope all is going well :)

A key component in helping transfer students get settled into Oneonta is the Office of New Student Services. They provide new students with all of the essential resources to progress and grow at the college. Some of these things include: Transfer Traditions, Transfers take the Lead, Transfer Student Mentors (TSMs).

TRANSFER TRADITIONS: Every semester, New Student Services collaborates with offices on campus to provide awesome programs and events for transfer students. Some of these traditions are Join the Club, Transfers Take the LEAD, and the Transfer Tea. Find more info on the Office of New Student Services website!!

TRANSFERS TAKE THE LEAD: An important piece on campus is the opportunity for students to develop their leadership potential. Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) credit is available to all students and all you have to do is attend programs and events (that’s pretty easy!) Not only will you learn more about what resources are available, but you will also gain LEAD credit. The New Student Services Office invites members of the campus to discuss their resources and how they will specifically help transfer students through a series of programs called Transfers Take the LEAD. TIS’ THE SEASON FOR FINALS!

Winter break is just around the corner and it’s almost time to get ready to head home for the wonderful holidays; once we make it through finals! When I lived in Hulbert, it was very important to follow the instructions my RA gave me when it came to checking out. Some important things to remember to do:

- Unplug your refrigerator and empty it of its contents ahead of time. You want to give it time to thaw and most importantly you don’t want to return in January to moldy food.

- Unplug all electronics from the outlets (WE DON’T WANT ANY FIRES)!

- Make sure to bring home any college prohibited items such as extension cords, alcohol, and candles.

- Make sure your windows are fully closed/double paned and locked. This helps keep the temperature of the building up.

- Lower your blinds and make sure they are closed.

- Make sure to sign the piece of paper that will be hung on your door by your RA. This helps increase the communication between you and your RA.

After all the residents leave, the RA’s and RD’s go through each room to double check that all of the above instructions are followed.

My neighbors at the time were not returning to Hulbert Hall after the winter break. They had to follow the same procedures as well as make sure their room was completely clean. They needed to fully move out of the room, make sure their space was ready for a new student to move into, and make sure they checked out with an RA by completing the proper paperwork and handing in their key.

FINALS WEEK:

Tis’ the season for being stressed beyond comprehension!! We all know this time of the semester can be overwhelming but it doesn’t’ need to be. Here are some tips that I found on Google that are fun and easy ways to keep us sane during finals:

1. Doodle on a piece of paper

2. Take a step outside. Even if it's only for a second, you will appreciate the fresh air.

3. Crank up the volume on your favorite song and enjoy three minutes of solid rocking out.

4. Do 10 jumping jacks

5. Reward yourself with a piece of candy or junk food. If you don't have any, go find some. You can spare a couple extra minutes for a much-needed sugar rush! (Resolve to eat vegetables from now on after the resulting sugar crash.)

6. Try deep-breathing. They might seem awkward at first, but they're super effective. Personally, I find this very helpful.

7. Search Google Images for: cutest babies, cutest animals, funny memes, hot celebrities

8. Let out your best horror movie scream. Trust me, it is so exhilarating! I do this as well but I choose to scream into a pillow.

9. Give your mom, BFF, or whoever else can make you laugh a quick phone call. It's a simple and pleasant distraction — just don't chat for too long!

10. Have you ever meditated? Try it! Meditation can be anything you find relaxing. For example, if you completely stop what you’re doing and sit still in your chair for 5 minutes, with your eyes close, and focus on inhaling and exhaling, that can be a brief meditation. Of course, when all else fails, just take a deep breath and remember that break is right around the corner.

Some More Tips for Success: Don’t let test anxiety and cramming affect your grades this semester. Try the following tips:

1. Study for 30-40 minutes a day in the week leading up to your final

2. Exercise before you study→ this gets blood flowing to your brain which can help you focus and absorb more information

3. Sleep after you study→ the brain encodes what it has recently learned into memory while you sleep.

4. Of course, eat a healthy breakfast!

As long as you're prepared and are trying your best, you will be fine. Stay focused and know that another semester is almost over! You can do it. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE :)

Mine was spending time with my goddaughter. She’s almost one is growing so fast! Every time I go home she’s bigger and is doing much more, like crawling, talking, and laughing :)

THE STRUGGLE: TRANSFERRING, FINANCIALLY, AND REGISTERING FOR CLASSES!

WOW! We are in November already, where has the semester gone?! (I can’t say I’m really complaining though…)

Last Thursday I attended the financial literacy program “Making Cent$” and found out that my future finances are pretty good! I highly recommend going to this next year. It was great to get an idea of how much money I will be spending and saving when I graduate from grad school and begin my career.

When I first arrived at the event, I was given my free T-shirt (because I preregistered) and a folder that had a layout of things that I would be spending money on, on the back of the folder. I was also given a certain amount of “money” before I went into the ballroom to start my adventure. The money was like monopoly money and I received over $3,000 as my monthly salary for being a school counselor. The various tables that were set up outlined the ballroom and required payment at each one.

Some of the tables included: 1. Student Loans 2. Taxes 3. Housing 4. Food shopping 5. Insurance 6. Transportation/Owning a Car 7. Miscellaneous spending 8. Sustainability 9. Credit/Debt 10. The Classroom (conclusion)

At each table I stopped at, I was required to pay with my paper money for all of the above. For example, at the Student Loans table which was represented by the Financial Aid Office, I had to pay $380 dollars as my monthly payment in student loans. Another example is my payment of $590 at the Miscellaneous table...clearly I need to control my online shopping.

Overall, I really did enjoy this event and I’m glad that I have an idea of what my life will be like financially in the future.

My Transferring Process- When I transferred to Oneonta two years ago (I feel old...) the office of Academic Advisement (AA) helped me understand my degree requirements and my degree applicable credits.

AA is an overall resource for students, parents, faculty, and staff. They are largely involved in helping students comprehend the concept of degree applicable credits, courses for their specific major, and reassuring that students meet with their faculty advisor.

Another huge suggestion is transfer students getting to know their financial aid advisor as well! They are helpful when it comes to looking at degree applicable credit. BTW- degree applicable credit (DAC) is any credit required by your degree program. DAC is any credit which may satisfy any requirements found in any of the three categories/classifications. Degree applicable credit is any credit that fulfills requirements defined by the student’s degree program.

One very common issue experienced my most transfer students, including myself, is the struggle of transferring course credits from other schools to SUNY Oneonta.

I personally dealt with this when I transferred from SUNY Delhi. There was a lot of crying and screaming involved. I took Bio 100 at Delhi but, I was informed that I still had to take it at Oneonta. Not paying much attention to the fact that I was retaking a course I already took, I started the Bio course at Oneonta and was very overwhelmed with the workload it had (I was also the only junior in the class). It wasn’t until about the 3rd week of classes when I received an email from an office (I do not remember which one) that was informing me that my Bio 100 credit from SUNY Delhi has successfully transferred over and that I did not need to take Bio 100 in Oneonta anymore. Can you imagine the frustration I felt when I got this email…after all the time and energy I put into the work for this course…I was NOT a happy camper!

Of course, my natural instinct, was to call my mom and start screaming/crying at her thinking she could make this all better. After the realization that my mother could not do anything for me, my thought was to head over to academic advisement to see if someone could help me sort out this whole mess! As I walked into the office completely distraught, I was able to meet with the director of academic advisement, Eileen McClafferty, who used her superpowers to help me straighten out this mess.

It has been a while since I have told this story but, basically, there was a delay in that specific credit being transferred over which was why I started taking Bio 100 at SUNY Oneonta.

All in all, everything was figured out and in the end, I was able to withdraw from the course receiving a “W” on my transcript but, I became a happy transfer student. My situation is what most transfer students go through when transferring. This stuff happens, and you really need to be on top of your credits and courses when it comes to switching schools (and you cannot rely on your parents to handle this for you).

Tis’ the season for class registration! I hope you all get the classes you need and aren’t too stressed about it. The Registrar Office is a great resource during this time. They can help make sure that you get into the classes you need or, if you don’t get your classes, they can help you create a backup plan.

Fortunately, being a part time graduate student, I registered for classes no problem.

So I hope all of my transfer students had a great Halloween, I know I did! I’m already thinking about my costume for next year (I’m crazy)

Today’s blog will talk about the marvelous Career Development Center (CDC) and the Payroll office.

I actually work at the CDC as their office assistant and have been there for a little over a year. I started out as a federal work study student and made my way up to the office assistant spot. I am a CDC genius! I know everything you need to know about the office.

The Career Development Center does exactly what their titles says…they help students develop their career exploration and help you prep for life after college. Some of the services we offer are: -resume/cover letter critiquing -mock interviewing -internship opportunities -student employment opportunities -Processing tax forms and I-9’s -a library filled with information about different majors and careers -graduate schools -DragonLink

Here are some quick facts that you need to know when going to the CDC: 1. Resume Critiquing- the office recommends that students hand in their resumes to be critiqued before making an appointment with a counselor. This takes about 3-5 days to be done. So, if you have a deadline for your resume, make sure you plan accordingly. Students receive an email when their resume is finished. 2. Mock Interviews- your resume and job description are needed when making the appointment. Interviews are an hour long and they may be recorded if desired. You should dress as if this is a real interview (make sure you look sharp!)= 3. Internship Opportunities- in order to obtain an internship you must pass your College Writing Exam (CWE). 4. Student Employment- students who get a job on campus are required to fill out tax forms every fall semester (and an I-9 if it is your first time working on campus). All tax forms are available on the CDC website and provided in our office. If you have to fill out an I-9, make sure you bring a passport, social security card or birth certificate and photo ID (passport triumphs over everything!) Another important thing you need to have is your “white card” which is provided by your supervisor. Once all of the forms are completed and handed in to us, the office will give you a timesheet and then you can start working & making money $$! Another SUPER IMPORTANT fact is that students are not allowed to begin working until all of the paperwork has been completed and submitted to the CDC!

These services are delivered by five wonderful counselors: -Amy Benedict-Augustine: Director of the CDC/general counselor -Megan Scrivener: Internship Coordinator/general counselor -Matthew Munson: General counselor/expert on Graduate Schools -Anna Legname: Student Employment Services Coordinator/general counselor -Cassandra Mullinex: First Destination Survey Coordinator/ general counselor

The CDC also hosts numerous events for students. I WORK EVERY EVENT SO IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO ASK! Some include: -The Graduate and Professional School Fair (which just passed and happens every fall semester) -Take the Lead: New York City Internship Fair (1/7/16 at the Manhattan Community College) -The Summer Opportunities Internship Fair (TBD)

Stop by the office at room 110 in the Netzer Administration Building! I’m there Mondays and Fridays J

GETTING PAID: All of the students who work on campus get paid through the payroll office (room 214 Netzer). *In order to pick up a paycheck you need to have your ID card!!

Paychecks are given out bi-weekly AND you have an option for direct deposit. I do direct deposit and it’s much easier than having to go to the office every time.

When I wanted to sign up for the direct deposit, I was able to get a form from the payroll office and the CDC also has them (the form is also on the payroll office website). I couldn’t fill out the form right then and there because I needed my bank to sign off on the form as well. So make sure you remember that you need to do that as well. FYI- When I was a FWS student I had a different timesheet than student temp service, make sure you are filling out the right timesheets depending on your position. I have two part-time positions on campus. My situation is a little different because I am a part-time grad student so I can make having a job work into my schedule. My CDC position qualifies as a student temp service job and my NSS/ResLife position qualifies as a faculty position. I wear many hats here but I am able to make everything work. With my two jobs I NEED to make sure that I do not go over my hours given to me for each job. This is something that every student with a job on campus has to keep in mind!!

WRAP IT UP: So this Thursday I will be attending the Making Cents Financial Literacy program in the Hunt Union Ballroom! In my blog next week I’ll let y’all know how it goes and if I can financially support myself after graduate school (I hope so!)

HELP ME PAY FOR COLLEGE, PLEASE!

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE! I hope you are all doing well because I am having a fantastic day so far!

Today’s blog will consist of great info about SUNY Oneonta’s Financial Aid office and an upcoming event called “Making Cent$ of Life After College!”

The financial aid office is part of the Wonderful World of Netzer, located in room 123 (near the registrar office and the call center btw).

When I transferred here, I worked with financial aid to see if I was eligible for an award. Luckily, I did have the help of my mother to assist me but, many transfer students are on their own with this stuff.

Here’s what I needed to do/know when I started attending SUNY Oneonta:

*In order to get my award, I needed to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and by completing this, I was able to get the name of my financial aid advisor. BTW→ there are 6 people available to ya’ll: 1. Bill Goodhue (Director) 2. Barbara Pledger (Assistant Director) 3. Serenity Beardslee 4. Brenda Balcom 5. Rich Hansen 6. Jim Devine

I took full advantage of my advisor by asking all of my questions, expressing my concerns and making sure my financial aid was all set. PLEASE DO THIS TOO! REMEMBER: When making an appointment, you need to know you’re A#!!

My advisor also stressed to me to pay attention to emails from the financial aid office. These emails are important because they will notify you if you need to complete any additional steps to receive your money→ VERY IMPORTANT!

*After I completed my FAFSA application, I also needed to add that I was attending SUNY Oneonta to the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (NYSHESC) which will update your TAP grant as well. This can be done here: http://www.hesc.ny.gov/repay-your-loans/my-hesc-account-access

*Once I completed all of the necessary steps (which can be found on the financial aid website http://www.oneonta.edu/development/finaid/process.asp), I was ready to be awarded my aid!

Thinking I was all done, I was wrong!

Remembering what my financial advisor said to me about emails, I received one stating that I needed to complete an entrance counseling interview for my new school that I have transferred to. Transfer students need to complete exit/entrance counseling interviews in order to receive any aid. So, I needed to do both and once I completed those I then was able to receive some money$.

I was finally all finished with Financial Aid, and they were probably ready to get rid of me after this process ha-ha.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER: Admissions needs all of your final transcripts in order for your financial aid to be awarded! The transcripts NEED to be from AFTER you have completed your time at your previous school.

After that whole process, I also learned that I was eligible for Federal Work Study (FWS)! FWS is an awesome opportunity for students, with financial aid, to work on campus and get some extra money! Like a part time job. Depending on how much aid you receive, that will determine how many hours you can work a semester. I was awarded aid so I was allowed to work up to 100 hours a semester. I worked as a computer lab monitor in the Fine Arts Building and as a front desk receptionist for the Career Development Center (also in Netzer!).

I think we can all agree that being a college student is a struggle financiallyL, so being able to work is a great way to get some side cash$$. So far, I have worked all of my two years here at Oneonta, and have held more than one job at a time. I love working, can’t you tell?!

Moving on to my next topic→ as the semesters went by I was concerned about life after college and what my financial mess was going to look like.

The Financial Aid office and the Student Accounts office have both teamed up to create a Financial Literacy program at SUNY Oneonta. A new event that they have created for us is:

The 2nd Annual Making Cents of Life after College!

The goal of SUNY Oneonta’s Making Cents is to prepare students with a strong understanding of personal financial management concepts in order to promote informed decision making that will enhance short-term success as a student and long-term success as an adult. Here, advisors will map out a financial plan for you that will touch on how much you will be paying a month in student loans, how much you’ll be making with your career choice, how much you’ll be paying with your living situation, and even how much you will paying for groceries!

I will be going to this on November 5, 2015 in the Hunt Union Ballroom from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM. I pre-registered via Campus Connection but it also mentioned that walk-ins are welcome! BTW- the first 100 students to pre-register will get a FREE t-shirt! WE LIKE FREE! Pre-registration ends 11/1/15 so GO GO GO! “INTRODUCTORY & THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NETZER!”

HELLO EVERYONE!

My name is Kaytee and I am the new Transfer Assistant for the office of New Student Services (NSS) and the new Head RA in Hulbert Hall. I work with the assistant director and the Transfer Student Mentors on making sure your transition to SUNY Oneonta is a smooth one! Just like you guys, I was a transfer student as well. I transferred to SUNY Oneonta two years ago and unfortunately did not have all of the awesome resources you all have now but, was still able to fall in love with Oneonta. I graduated in 2015 and am now continuing my education in the School Counseling Graduate program here at Oneonta (I love it so much here I just can’t leave!)

When I first transferred here, I was unaware of all the amazing offices that the campus had to offer. One building, that has multiple services is the NETZER ADMINISTRATION BUILDING!

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NETZER-

The Netzer Administration building is, I believe, one of the best resources for SUNY Oneonta students. There are multiple offices and departments that offer great services to students. Some of the beneficial offices include:

-The Career Development Center

-Student Development

-Financial Aid

-Registrar

-Continuing Education/Graduate Studies

-Academic Advisement

-Employment Opportunities

-Payroll Office

Everyone should be aware of these offices because you will most likely utilize them at some point.

MY PLAN: For this weekly blog I plan on talking about each office and my personal experience with them. I will tell you directly what transfer students can gain from the office and what they do specifically. This can be a helpful guide for when you have an issue and you don’t know which office to go to, to fix it!
