“Please, I’ve been climbing trees since I was six,” Pin sassed as he took off his shoes and began to climb. In a matter of minutes he was already sat on the highest branch that would support him. He looked back down at the other guy and yelled,”Was that supposed to be a challenge?”

Koda huffed. “It looked like a big tree!” He grumbled. “I always forget that there are other forresty people here in the city... I’ve never really known other forresty people.” He held up the money and waved it. “Fine, fine”

“I don’t really mind about all the coffee you’ve had, it kept me going to watch you get hyped after every single one–.. a lot of people don’t have that effect anymore.” Luke laughed, then shrugged. “Well, if you want, you can have like some food or something on the house.. Since you’ve had so much coffee in your system, you must be starving.”

“If it’s your first time doing near 5 cups of coffee in a go, then yeah it’s normal.” Luke smiled at the guy, another laugh daring to erupt. “It’s not a good habit, but I have a few regulars that do it, but space it out over the day–.. so, it’s a habit for some, yes. I can only have one cup a day or every two days but some people are on 3 cups every 3 hours, you know–.. all dependent on the person; and you seem the type to get pumped off fresh air and a jog, so I’ll put you down as a no.”

Koda laughed, slightly manically if he did say so himself. The stranger seemed to know an awful lot about the way everything worked, although he worked here so naturally he’d see a lot of different people and learn how different people worked with coffee. “I am actually quite hungry now that you mention it. I heard that people eat once they’ve had alcohol to soak it all up. Does that work like the same with coffee and stuff? If I have something bread-like, will it soak up the coffee and take a bit of the buzz off-- Or is it too late for me now?”

Running both his hands through his hair a few times, Koda perked up at the mention of the fresh air. “Oh I love the outdoors but I currently fear that going outside may make be a tad insane. I grew up outside. Literally, cabins and treehouse style. It was fucking brialliant. You should see the views I’ve seen. I miss Canada... The North... The forests... All that, really.”

“I wouldn’t get too excited...” Koda huffed. “I’m only back because a friend of the schools was on the search for me after they put out a message. My life state is ‘missing’. I don’t know why they panicked so much.”

“So... 20 minutes to climb to the top of that tree? If you do it I’ll give you--- $5.”

“Oh would you die already Charman-- Oh. Hi. Playing Pokemon. What were you saying?”

Luke sat across from the boy who had been sitting in his workplace for the past two hours, brows furrowed. He didn’t know how to start the conversation, so he stared. He went to stand as the stranger spoke, then seated himself again. “Uh, alright–..” he shrugged, like was allowed to complain his workplace, ha, no way. He glanced over at his supervisor then kept staring at the caffeinated other. 

“Look, I am so intrigued by this conversation, really and truly, but my manager over there–.. as much as we’re not opposed to long staying customers or new regulars –.. needs to know if we’re making your order a permanent one.” Luke shrugged over at the boy, smiling softly. “’Cause we’ve not seen you around here before, so, sometimes we just think you’re a one-off, but I said I’d seen you around school and yeah–.. so, is this going to be a normal thing?” He took a breath. “Or were you just that pumped to be up bright and early on a Saturday?”

Koda sat for a moment, perplexed by the question. “Uhm--” He laughed briefly. “Well I honestly don’t know, you know? Like if I begin travelling soon then I’m not gona be around but also I do actually probably need to work a little bit more to have the money,” He laughed again, shrugging. Koda placed a hand on the table, smiling at them. “I’m so sorry for like, all the coffee I’ve drank because literally I don’t even normally drink coffee which is probably why it’s having such an effect on me.”

A headache was well under way at this point. Koda took a  deep breathe and pulled a face as he exhaled. “God my head is killing me. Is this normal-- Oh shit wait you asked me a question.” He stopped, laughing again and stretched his eyes wide open. “I think we’ll go with a no because it can’t be a good habit to drink this much coffee can it?”

It was ridiculously early for the young boy to up and awake. He’d usually still be in bed right now, but an inability to sleep and a craving for life had pushed him to be sat in a Starbucks with three empty cups in front of him. Eyes wide and hands moving with a slight shake, he finished his forth cup and then pulled a book out of his bag.

A stranger sat opposite Koda and he looked up with a wired gaze. “How’s your day been?” He questioned, eyebrows raised. As someone left the store, he snapped up to look as the doorbell rang. “This book? It’s a book about travelling. It’s like a more fun self help book. I’m actually bunking a lot of my classes at the moment and working all the time. I mean yeah I might fail an exam or two but y’know, at least if I don’t get in I can just continue to travel and not come back, right/”

“--- What.. Wait, wat were you on about?”

“Aah, I see; was coach tough on you about it? ‘cause I like to think I cantalk some sense into him, given the fact he’s put up with the girls and I for this long, but—- yeah. You know, if you want to get better at maths, I could always tutor you.”

“He just threw a chair and ball at me and told me to leave: Nothing much really. Thanks again for this. Any improvement would be a dramatic difference to be honest. You’re a god-send.”

“I got kicked out of the gym for putting black food dye in people’s shampoos, so instead I’m here to get better at Maths.”
