I may have figured this out a whole 2 years ago (please see that post for the results and a few warnings), but it was brought to my attention today that there is no how-to post about soaking a glue-filled Mattel doll head in L.A.’s Totally Awesome to get the glue out.

This is L.A’s Totally Awesome (TA, from here on, or LAsTA if you’re nasty). It’s an all purpose cleanser with an “As Seen on TV” stamp. A few auto detailers like to use this stuff to clean car carpeting and seats. It is recommended as a carpet cleanser, as well as a bunch of other stuff listed on the bottle.

You want the concentrate, not the sprayer. I get mine at the Dollar Tree, meaning it costs about $4/gal. You can get it online.

I like this stuff better than Goo Gone, because I have a hard time getting Goo Gone to wash out of doll hair (we have hard water), and no trouble at all getting TA out.

Gigi here has head glue. It’s liquified and soaked down into her hair almost the entire length.

And these are the plastic cups that come with Aldi brand Specially Select ice cream sundaes. My son eats a LOT of those sundaes, so we have a LOT of these cups. They also come with lids!

The first thing you want to do is remove the doll’s head. I can’t stand the way that nasty glue feels on my skin, so I like to hold the head with a paper towel while removing it. You can also wear gloves.

It doesn’t seem to matter, but I do my best to get all of the hair and head soaking together. That’s just in case the TA changes the hair or vinyl in some way. I want to be even. However, the only changes I’ve noticed are to the texture of the hair. You do want to soak all of the hair together.

I put the heads in upside down to make sure the glue in her scalp is saturated. The other way around, you might get an airbubble and then part of the glue isn’t getting soaked.

Pour the concentrate straight from the bottle, making sure to pour it into the neck hole so the head doesn’t float up and out. If it does float, get a stick (chopstick, popsicle stick, handle of a spoon, or you know, gloves) and push it down until it fills and sinks. You don’t want to touch this stuff, it will make your skin sad.

A little flake of glue came out already. Look in the bubbles nearish the tip of her right ear.

Put the lid on to slow evaporation.

And I like to stick them in a sunny window, which is more effective when it is sunny. Today, it is not.

But, since the glue does react to heat, I figured warm cleanser might work better.

TIP:  Also put the cups in a container lid or something like the ones that come off of cheap lunch meat. You can see little cup rings all over my windowsill. The TA evaporated, condensed on the lid, slipped out and down the outside of the cup, and dissolved the windowsill paint.

And then you wait. How long you wait depends on how much glue is in the head.

Check it every couple days and fish out large glue lumps. If the solution turns cloudy or has a lot of lumps, dump it out and put new cleanser.

I do occasionally stick the tip of my hemostat in the neck hole and swish it around to help dislodge more glue.

If you find the hair stays clumpy and gross, try either rubbing cleanser into the hair with your gloves on, or lay the head out (do NOT rinse) and “brush” the hair with a toothbrush. Friction helps break up the glue.

When you feel like enough glue has come out, dump out the cleanser and rinse the head A LOT inside and out. Rinse, rinse, rinse the hair. Lots of nasty lumps will come out. It’s gross. Be prepared.

You may have to get in and pull out any very large pieces of glue. A hemostat is great for that. You can also try needle nose pliers or tweezers.

Follow up with a soapy wash. I use plain old dish soap because it’s good at breaking up grease and oil. You can use shampoo if you want.

This process will make the hair dry and unpleasant feeling. It’s a degreaser, and doll hair is made of plastic.

So after all of that, give your doll’s hair a soak in some conditioner. A lot of folks like to use fabric softener but I don’t care of it. I use people hair conditioner. This is a great way to use up a conditioner you bought and don’t like. You can also grab a bottle of something cheap at the Dollar Tree if you go in there to get some TA, the quality of the conditioner doesn’t seem to matter.

If I’m feeling patient, I’ll leave it soaking overnight.

After that, style and dry as you like.

But do check out that older post for the results before sticking a head you really like into some TA. Keep your expectations realistic.
