"i would kill for you" "i would die for you" okay but would you forgive me if i forgot something important for the 51204th time in a row even though i tried my best to remember
Instinctively, Josh doesn't pull away from Alex's grasp. He pulled himself closer. Their lost look, the rising panic in their voice told him this was too much to bear. okay we'll figure it out together
Did he, believe that?
Part of him just wants to say yes, because.. Well because people leave, sometimes. Josh was proof of that. And Alex was no different, not really. Not towards the last year they had known eachother—
Honestly, he couldn't remember.
And that pained him.
He had started to forget more and more about Doctor Alex Grayson ever since they disappeared. Be it for pride, self-preservation, or because he'd dug himself deeper into his own rock bottom.
"Hey, come on, let's... Are you hungry?" maybe some food would do them good, and then, maybe sleep.
"Let's grab you something to eat and then.. we'll figure something out."
The door reopened as the curly headed Conall emerged holding two glasses of water, one for the visitor and the other because, well Josh had looked like he may have needed it too.
A glimpse through the peephole and a quick listen had Gabe quickly realize that this was some kind of emotional reunion.
But who was this guy?
"here." The younger cleared his throat, nodding to the red-eyed Alex to pass him his glass, and the other to Josh.
"you guys, uh.. wanna, come in?" He offered tentatively, carefully taking in his father's demeanor.
"..dad?" a gentle nudge like an unspoken you okay?

@biotechagent
Alex did not escape that Josh didn't answer the question. Ah. The realization, that this was something his friend would not put past him stung, but maybe that was fair enoug. Maybe he truly had squandered every trust that Josh ever had in him.
Despite that, he smiled shakily. Josh was still feeding him, it seemed. And their closeness felt good. Familiar. Some things hadn't changed apparently. He wasn't hungry -his stomach felt all twisted up- but he nodded anyway. "Okay. Yeah, sure. Why not."
Not like he had anything better to do.
Having a plan, some next steps, calmed him enough that he could quicky wipe at his face when the door opened. Surely it did not take that long to get water, but Alex appreciated the privacy they had gotten, however flimsy.
"Thanks", he muttered when he took the glass from 'Gabe' and when he took a sip he did realize he was parched actually.
He was just about to put the glass down again and ask who Gabe was, exactly, but the other spoke first, carefully, as if not to disturb. Dad. Confused, his eyes flickered from Gabe, who looked adult enough, to Josh. This time, he didn't even find words to speak. Dad??
There was no pushback to the suggestion, which felt like a good step forwards. Josh appreciated that, that Alex could give up his control and... Hell, the guy was probably too shocked to do anything about it.
Josh would have to prepare for the worst to come.
Finally the water got here. He watched Alex grab his glass, quietly taking his own with a nod of thanks to his son.
His eyes flickered back to Alex—
Then back to Gabe. Uh..
The slightest of frowns set on his brow as he drank the water, eyes moving from one curly head to the other over the brim of his glass.
Wait.
Wait wait-
Why did they look so alike??
' dad '
"Hm?" caught off guard, the man's half empty glass hovered as he shook his head to clear this strange idea.
"Yeah- Uh, no, I think... Thanks." he gave the glass back to his son. "We should head out.
You can stay with me until we figure this out." he told Alex, a firm suggestion that they would hopefully agree to.
"I have the car downstairs."
Gabe's head tilted slightly to one side, watching Josh's stare, watching it move from him to the other man and then back again. What?? He almost asked.
But then that startled look of his answering him told Gabe he'd just spaced in his overwhelm. It was known to happen.
Whatever this was seemed.. big. Somehow.
How did 'don't let him inside' become 'stay with me?'
"the fuck.." he mouthed to his father in his bewilderment, though he stepped aside to let them pass.
He nudged the elder Conall though, as he went to whisper a 'call me later', as in, Josh had some kind of explaining to do.
@biotechagent
Having an Evil Discussion
What do you think that sad little man is to your dad?
"i dunno, but they look... close?"
Wait, which one is your dad?
"Josh, obviously.
why even ask..?"
Josh could practically hear their brain breaking. His scientist, always finding a reason or explanation for how things worked, couldn't find one now. He took a small step closer, ready to reach for them in case..
It broke his heart seeing them like this.
The text? With a light shake of his head, Josh tried to think back to when the last time Alex had contacted him.
"..I never got that text." he said quietly. And if he had, he didn't remember. There was no way of finding out now anyway. That phone was long gone.
"Alex.." he reached out for them, slowly, carefully, worried they'd try and leave. "This isn't a joke.
You just, disappeared." you just stopped being my friend.
Five years. That number kept repeating in his head like a heartbeat, drumming in his ear.
He wanted nothing more than close the distance left between them, wrap his arms around his friend. Josh had been there for every moment in which he had felt lost, unfocused, like he was floating away. And he was here now.
With one hand he reached for his friend's arm, dug his fingers into the other's sleeve, as if worried he might lose him once more. As if, when he blinked again, everything around him would change for a second time. Another five years might pass.
"I don't know what's going on." His voice was hoarse from the tightness of his throat, and now there truly were tears he couldn't hold back, hot on his cheeks, as he tried to regain control of his shallow breaths.
But I never left.
"Is that what you believe? That I would just leave, for years? You and work and..." And his cat, who was god knows where, after all this time. For what?
Instinctively, Josh doesn't pull away from Alex's grasp. He pulled himself closer. Their lost look, the rising panic in their voice told him this was too much to bear. okay we'll figure it out together

Curly hair, lanky and looking sad
Remind you of anyone?
“No idea”
He opened his mouth, paused, a disturbed look coming over him.
“…. It’s not me from the future is it?”
Curly brown hair. Lanky. Sad eyes.
' says he's looking for you '
There was that silence again, as the man on the other end of the line tried to grasp what he was being told.
The frown depended, until a shake of his head cleared it away, the disbelief heavy in his heart.
Alex Grayson.
How many years had it been?
"—No.
Don't let him leave.
But don't let him inside. Okay?
I'll be right there."
Grabbing the phone, he headed to the door to get his keys. He paused.
"Gabe,
shield up if you have to."
No.
Right away Gabriel straightened up, listening to the instructions the former agent had for him.
Don't let him leave, but don't let him inside. A cautionary thought flew to Rue, as he went for the desk to grab the firearm his father left for him, pocketing it and throwing his shirt over for some disguise.
"Yeah, alright."
So he was dangerous then. "I'll keep him here. Come fast."
He hung up the phone, and pulled the door open again, only fast enough to step outside and shut it behind him.
"Why you lookin' for Josh?"
@biotechagent
@fuascailt
The stranger stepped inside and any other day Alex might have wondered why it wasn't possible to answer a simple yes-or-no question. But today wasn't any other day and so Alex, frazzled as he was, tried to keep his mind busy while he waited.
He didn't quite walk circles, but he tapped his fingers together as he waited, mentally went through his options. Maybe he was hallucinating. Possible. Of course on his walk here he had learned that he was not the only one affected but maybe he had hallucinated that too. Less likely?
The guy at his apartment -his former apartment apparently- had said he had been living there for three years. Alex had been there just this morning, leaving his coffee mug in the sink.
It didn't make any sense. His head hurt. He wanted a smoke desperatedly.
The door opening pulled Alex from his thoughts. The tapping of his fingers had turned into his fingernails digging into the skin of his own hand and he relaxed them now that he noticed.
Something was wrong. Obviously, but something more than the changes, the missing time. He didn't like the sight of the stranger in front of the closed door.
"Like I said, he is a friend. I'm afraid I lost my phone, so I can't just call him. If he's not here I can come back later." Alex knitted his eyebrows together as he looked the other over. "I'm sorry, who are you?"
Gabriel's eyes flickered downward, something softening in the boy's demeanor having caught sight of the familiar anxious habit of nails pressing into the palm of his hand. A distraction of the pain..
Nothing added up, why had Josh reacted that way?
"--i never heard of you." And his father kept a pretty select group of friends. His mouth opened and then shut at being asked who he was.
Disarmed as he was by the man's overall demeanor, he still wasn't about to go completely disregarding what Josh said and offering up any information.
"he's on his way." He said cautiously, ignoring 'Alex Grayson's question.
"you sure you're friends..?
Joshua Conall hasn't lived here for a while."
Well, as long as Alex didn't know who the other guy was, this meant little to him. Of course he never would have claimed to know all of Josh's friends or acquaintances or colleagues but...surely he should be aware of someone that stayed at his apartment? Alex had been over often enough after all.
Just as he considered if maybe it would be better to leave, he learned that Joshua was on his way. Choosing to accept this as truth, that at least calmed him a little.
For a few seconds at least. Until the information hit him like ice water.
"We used to be coworkers, but..." What to say? Friends felt too weak of a word, everything else too intimate to reveal to a stranger. Joshua knew all of the worst parts of him. His betrayal, his vices, his weaknesses. He had been there to remind him of his needs whenever Alex got his head stuck too deep in his work. There had been fights, sure, and he had grown distant in the last few months, too overwhelmed by shame and confusion and fear to stand Joshua looking at him. But he was still confident that he could recognize the other's steps blindly. Surely he had not missed this much?
"How long is a while?"
Used to be coworkers.
SHIELD coworkers or.. the side jobs? Gabe had a guess, but it made him take a step back. "You work for Shield?" He asked cautiously. That coupled with Josh's alarmed response made Gabriel step again in front of the door, as if to block the distressed looking man's way in.
But if anything, Alex looked so confused.
"Like, over a year now? What.."
Why did that information make the stranger blanch like that?
"hey- man, are you okay?? like I said, he's comin'.
Just uh.."
Caught between a rock and an awkward place, the young mutant shifted from one foot to the other. But this confusion all over the other man was contagious, so he couldn't help but ask-
"did you guys get in a fight or something?"
Was that it?
"'cause I've lived here, like, ten years and I never seen you before.
are you in some kinda trouble?" And was that trouble inclined to follow him here?

"--I'll get it!" The young mutant called from his spot on the couch, rolling off to stand only to bring his shin hard against the edge of the coffee table. "jjffuucK.."
Just, give him a second.
Next he nearly tripped over the scruffy little one-eyed dog lovingly known as Ferg. "dude!"
The apartment, still mostly furnished with all his and Josh's old belongings- the couch, kitchen table and island were the same, though plenty more decorations had been added over the years and since his Asgardian had moved in to join him.
Checking up through the peephole, Gabriel paused to find an unrecognized face behind.
Immediately on his guard, he left the chain latch closed as he cracked the door to inspect the curly haired stranger. "..Who is it?"
There was movement behind the door, he could hear as much. So someone was still living here, at least. But as soon as the door opened just a bit, Alex found a stranger's face looking back at him. His stomach sank. What if Josh had disappeared too? He had not considered the thought so far, but now it came uninvited.
He could not start losing it in front of a stranger's door. Maybe Josh was on vacation and had a neighbor housesit.
Sure. Because that's likely.
"Hi. I'm really sorry, I don't mean to be a nuissance. I'm, um...I'm looking or Joshua Conall. He's a friend of mine, but it seems..." It seems I blinked and the world changed around me. Too much information.
"...does he still live here?"
Only then did he remember that the stranger asked for his name. Fair enough. "Alex. Alex Grayson."
Was it just him, or did the guy look.. kind of crushed as soon as he set eyes on him? Gabriel's own narrowed as he took in the stranger, still not unlatching the door.
But something about that lost look, the hesitancy to speak reminded him uncomfortably of someone.
He was just about to ask him, "Yo, you g-" But the lost looking man started talking, and while the immediate apology sparked pity in the young man's heart- as soon as the name Joshua Conall was uttered, his guard was up again.
See people coming to look for Josh could easily be, and had been, bad news. And the pity Gabe felt, he no longer fully trusted now. It could be a ploy.
A practiced Never heard of him, was ready at the tip of Gabe's tongue, before the stranger supplied a name.
Well.. he'd never heard of him either.
What to do..
Squinting at the stranger, he looked him up, and looked him down. A friend, huh? "Gimme a second." He held up a finger, and disappeared beside the door again, he started dialing his father's number.
"yo.

In the quiet of the apartment, the stay-at-home father of two swiped the towel across the kitchen counter one last time.
Julia was out with Bernie, which gave him ample time to tidy up around the place, keeping his mind off of things. Ever since the argument he'd had with Julia, any time alone was a needed break.
The phone buzzed against the surface, and he put the call on speaker.
"Hey, what's up—"
He can't be sure he heard right, can't be sure he was on a call right now and Gabe had asked him something.
Alex Grayson.
Alex.
It took a moment of silence before he took a deep breath, a frown settling on his brow, Gabe might've thought he'd hung up.
"—uhm..." one swipe across his forehead, a shift in his stance, he can't find what to say besides, "Long time ago.
Why?"
The long moment of silence left Gabriel's eyes drifting toward the door, wondering for a moment if the call had been disconnected. But there was Josh's voice again.
He frowned deeply.
Okay..
Flicking open the peephole, Gabe took another good look at the guy. The one who looked all kinds of shaken up, lost and rattled. It didn't seem like an act.
"Curly brown hair, kinda lanky. Eyes kinda like.. sad, like a puppy?" He asked carefully. "That him?

As it turned out, the keys to Alex's apartment no longer actually fit. Someone, it seemed, had exchanged the locks. Not only that, but in the split second where the entire world had changed around him, someone else had moved in there. Gotten rid of all his furniture. Said he had been living there for the past three years.
That's impossible.
And yet there was a stranger in his apartment, none of his belongings were to be found anywhere and his cat was missing. This was what all those frozen-in-time supersoldiers had to be feeling - a little bit like losing his mind. With no answers besides the increasing realization that this, apparently, was happening to a lot of people, he went to the next adress that crossed his mind, already dreading what he would or wouldn't find there. His lips pressed into a tight, determined line, Alex made his familiar way to Joshua's apartment (although some details were off, it wasn't like it used to be) and, body tense, rang the doorbell. Surely something must have stayed the same?

i hate it when people ask me to "explain my thought process" like hell if i know
"what's going on in that head of yours?" nothing i want to be a part of
"STOP PUTTING YOURSELF INTO DANGER!" PROMPTS * assorted dialogue for expressing your fear that the person you care about might get themselves hurt if they keep acting like this, adjust as necessary
i thought i told you to stay back.
i love you too much to let you get hurt like this.
this affects me, too, you know.
every time you leave, i sit up all night waiting, praying you'll come back alive.
you keep pulling stunts like this and something bad will happen.
do you have a death wish or something?
this isn't fair to me.
i deserve better than this.
i didn't get any sleep last night because i was so worried about you.
you promised me you'd stop going out at night.
i don't like hearing this.
you've been risking your life, and for what? so you can feel like a goddamn hero?
i said i would handle it.
what the fuck are you doing here?
you told me you'd stay put.
so much for laying low.
you remember how bad it was last time.
seems like you haven't learned anything.
i believe you promised me you'd lay low.
i can't keep doing this.
don't give me that look.
we'll discuss this later.
this stops now.
i'm tired of picking up the pieces once you've left.
you keep throwing yourself into danger.
you don't give a shit about yourself, do you?
i'm sitting here, worried out of my mind, while you're out doing god knows what.
that was really stupid of you, and you know it.
i thought you knew better than this.
what's your excuse this time?
you do realize what this does to me, right? seeing you get hurt like this? you know it hurts me, too?
you really don't give a shit how this affects me, huh.
that was the dumbest possible thing you could have done.
i need you to stop throwing yourself into harm's way.
that was completely unnecessary.
they had it handled.
you didn't need to step in like that.
why do you think you're invincible?
the last time you pulled a stunt like this, it nearly got you killed.
i can't just sit here and watch you get hurt.
what are you trying to prove?
you just like fucking with my heart, don't you.
this shit hurts me, too, you know.
you're not the only one affected by this shit.
you've got a lot of people counting on you to come home every night.
what happens if you don't come back?
you think we can just carry on without you?
you think i can handle things if you end up dead?
i'm not sticking around to watch you get hurt.
you're not even slick.
you think you're invincible, don't you.
quit pretending you've got everything under control.
let someone else do it for a change.
you can't keep putting yourself through shit like this and expect me to just sit back and watch.
i'm done with this.
next time you do this, i'm not coming back.
promise me this is the end.
look me in the eyes and tell me you'll stop doing this.
let the authorities deal with it.
you're making a big mistake.
is it worth dying for?
i've dealt with enough pain over the years.
