the treehouse + the development between sanctuary, childhood dependency, and the uncomfortable concept of change.  

the main arc / path that i take on this blog is canon divergent and tied in terms of dynamics with those on my exclusives list. the path follows the tozier family making a move out of derry to indianapolis, indiana. during the first couple years of having this blog, i’d developed a headcanon and concept surrounding a treehouse build in the backyard of the tozier home and how it plays a role into richie’s ability to cope with trauma, self esteem issues and a general place of comfort and sanctuary for not only himself but for the rest of his friends as well, a sense of creating a home away from their homes when those places became a haunted shell of what a home should actually be. 

the treehouse, being something that he built with his father in his early childhood is also a sign of the relationship he has with his father. it was a project they could work on together, something to bond them together in ways that only seemed to annoy his mother more. 

the treehouse as always been a place that richie sought comfort, a place of healing. a place that he simply could be himself without fear. a place to laugh. to rest. to joke with friends. a place that he’ll very soon lose when his family makes the move to indiana. the loss of not only his friends but the loss of a place that he spent so much of his time is something very unsettling and uncomfortable for him. to move to a new state and a new city without the ability to seek shelter in the treehouse again within that difficult transition leaves little to be desired. 

it’s this sense of unease that pushes richie to develop new means of coping. pushing through the idea of being dependent on this treehouse and the safety it provided into learning to leave behind the aspects of a childhood that was filled with horrors. it’s forcing him to develop a sense of independence and self-soothing techniques, pushing him to face uncomfortable situations head-on without the urge to hide away there.
