I think Vergil is so fascinating to me because he’s been living behind a façade his whole life, to the point that he’s not really sure who he is without it. He was the studious and mature twin when he and Dante were kids, but I theorize that a lot of that was because with Sparda gone, Vergil took it upon himself to be the “man” of the house at like. seven years old. He was ruthless and cold in DMC3, but that was because he’d been constantly running and hiding for years beforehand, and needed to be cold to survive. He was a shell of his former self as Nelo Angelo. He was falling apart at the seams and so desperately clinging to that desire for the security that comes with ultimate power that he ripped his son’s arm off and cut away his own humanity. Even V and Urizen were both… different, in a way, different enough that they could’ve been two people, had they been born naturally. When he’s reborn, Vergil keeps up his façade, but you can see it slip for a second when he thanks Nero before leaving through a portal.

(Which in retrospect is pretty fucking funny considering Nero has no clue who he is, but also kinda sweet, because it shows that no matter how hard he tries to bury them deep down, Vergil has feelings. He feels things just as much as Dante does—if not more—but allowing yourself to display emotion outwardly is a show of weakness, in his experience. Vergil refuses to be perceived as weak, even if it comes at his own detriment.)

Now, after the events of DMC5, Vergil doesn’t have to run anymore. He has Dante back. He has his body back. He has his power back. But it’s kinda like a dog chasing a car. He finally caught it, finally achieved that lofty dream of being so powerful that nothing can touch or hurt him, but what’s a dog gonna do with a car? Dogs can’t drive. Vergil doesn’t know what peace is. He’s been running for so long, hiding behind a mask out of necessity for so long, that I don’t think he fully knows who he is outside of killing and surviving. He doesn’t know how to live like a person rather than a cornered animal, and that scares him more than Mundus and his servants ever did.

I feel like after DMC5 (and presumably after returning to the human world after he and Dante finish their weird lil honeymoon in Hell), Vergil doesn’t know how to be human. But now that he has Dante back, now that he has a family and something to live for other than power, he wants to try.

I know it was probably done for gameplay purposes, but sometimes I think about the narrative weight of Vergil refusing to use his Devil Trigger until Dante got his 🥺

"What Makes a Devil," Chapter 4

Waves, Souls, and Observable Changes

Summary:

Dante decides to get back Samhain's confiscated belongings, only for him and Vergil to find something completely unexpected and far more valuable than they could've imagined.

Excerpt:

"Impossible…" Vergil whispered, then said it again, louder, almost shouting, "This is impossible! How could a weak demon like Samhain obtain a Devil Arm?! He doesn't have the strength to become a Devil Arm himself, much less enough power to force a greater being to submit!"

Dante, who had been holding his cupped hands to his ear, eyes closed as he listened, smiled and opened his eyes again. "Vergil, twin of mine… you're forgetting something important~" he sing-songed.

Vergil frowned, sliding back towards his brother, his caution proving justified when Dante hooked an arm around his neck and yanked him down to listen as well. "You're the one who told me that you don't have to beat a devil for them to submit. Listen! That's not just one voice!"

With a soft gasp, Vergil obediently leaned in close to listen as well, expression almost instantly softening. "Oh. I see. So that's how it is." He hummed to himself, then murmured, "I count at least one hundred and thirty, maybe a few more. Samhain did say that Mundus sent the crippled, the old, and the last survivors of a creche to die." He glanced at Dante. "Do you think… his hatch-mates?"

"They're his brothers and sisters, Verg. They must've pulled together to keep him safe after they died, then gave everything they had to save him from Mundus's last attack." Dante grinned, then pulled Vergil in enough to plant a kiss on his brother's temple. "It's what siblings do, after all."

Vergil growled, shoving at him while Dante playfully refused to let go. Abruptly, Vergil stopped resisting and grabbed Dante instead, pulling him in tight and tucking Dante's head beneath his chin. "Samhain must've been the youngest," he grumbled, scowling ferociously.

Dante blinked, then beamed, a low, purring rumble joining the room's ambient noise.

Their moment was broken by one of the machines giving a loud BEEEEEEP!
