Local author publishes 14th book
Dec 15, 2018
CHARLES TOWN — Nationally recognized author Bob O’Connor, of Charles Town, has published his 14th book.
This book is quite different than others from the same author, although the topic is certainly familiar — the American Civil War, according to a release from the author.
O’Connor’s new book is his first children’s book, a historical fiction account of a distant relative called “I Was a Drummer Boy in the American Civil War.”
The book speaks to the trials and tribulations of James Minnihan who was the nephew of the author’s great uncle, Michael Minnihan, who marched with the 105th Illinois Infantry, a part of Sherman’s army. Michael Minnihan was the older brother of O’Connor’s great grandfather, John Paul Minnihan.
O’Connor had the children’s book on the back burner — in search for an illustrator, the release said. A man approached him at a Civil war event in Gettysburg in 2017. He said his daughter was an illustrator. When O’Connor checked out her website, he found Sheena Hisiro was indeed an excellent illustrator with experience in many other children’s books.
Hisiro operates a design business in New York City. She has a bachelor’s degree in communications design from Pratt Institute. She has illustrated more than 35 other books including “The Boy Who Cried Wolf!,” “My Glasses,” “I’m Rascal,” “The Adventures of Patch Cat” and “Strabismouse, Josiah and Julia Go to Church” and “Matushka Z.’s Very Russian Looking Hat.” Her website is oodlesofdoodles.tumblr.com.
O’Connor sent her photographs of Civil War drums, of some of the soldiers in the 105th Illinois, of the train station in Dixon, Illinois where the 105th Illinois left for service, and others — so that her illustrations would be historically authentic.
The story follows research O’Connor found in regimental records, letters from members of the regiment, and two diaries that survived the war.
Some of the illustrations of the book show James and his drum being carried across a river by his uncle because he was too short to cross by himself; his participation with the regimental band in a concert on July 4 in Marietta, Georgia; James standing beside the regimental officer to receive instructions during a battle; and leading his regiment in the Grand Army of the Republic victory parade in Washington City at the end of the conflict.
The author has been recognized nationally by being named a finalist four times in national book competition. He has written five nonfiction books and now nine historical fiction books.
O’Connor writes a column in The Journal the first Sunday of each month on the editorial page. He also hosts the podcast “The Chronicles of the American Civil War,” which is available anytime day or night for free on iTunes, Tunein, Stitcher, or Google Play.
The new book is 50 pages and has a retail price of $10.95. The book is available at Patterson’s Drug Store in Martinsburg, at Four Season’s Books in Shepherdstown, and at the author’s website — www.boboconnorbooks.com or at www.amazon.com.

We have come to know you for your historical books and historical fiction that is geared toward an adult reading level. What inspired your first children’s book?
Often adults are looking for books for their children who are too young to read my other books. This provides them with another option.
How much research did it take to find out about James Minnihan, the little drummer boy who inspired this book?
Virtually none. He was the nephew of my great uncle, Michael Minnihan.
Tell me about your illustrator. How did you work putting together the book?
I found my illustrator Sheena Hisiro through her father whom I met at a Civil War reenactment. He gave me her card and told me that if I ever needed an illustrator, to check her out. I did. I found she had illustrated 35 children’s books. Her website showed her excellent work.
Because this book is written for children, did you have to learn to write in a different way for the younger level compared to your other novels?<&first>
Obviously, the writing had to be toned down to a much lower level.
Why was it important to you to write a children’s book?
Children need to know the stories too. Too little history is being taught in the schools.
Has this inspired you to write more in the same genre?
Yes. I am working now on a book about a blind boy who helped save the Union. My grandson, Kyle, who attends Maryland School for the Blind, is the lead character. The story has him overhearing a plot to send blankets with small pox germs to try to kill President Lincoln and helping foil the plan. The plot actually happened but was unsuccessful.
What do you hope young readers will learn from your book?
That the young drummer boy had a very important job. During a battle, the noise was so loud the soldiers could not hear the commands of their officers. The drummer boy had to stand next to the commanding officer and pounded out the orders on his drum.
Where can readers purchase your book?
Four Seasons, Shepherdstown; Patterson’s Drug Store, Martinsburg; Amazon.com; and at my website www.bob oconnorbooks.com.
