This is the eighth year that Black Duck software and North Bridge provided industry insights around the current state and future trends of open source.

The deeper meaning of this year’s survey: For the first time in a long, long time, this survey results witnessed record levels of corporate participation in open source, as well as the greater impact open source software is having on technology and security.

High Quality For Low Cost? A motivating factor for enterprises

Cost has long driven open-source adoption. Earlier, cost enough was the primary driver for the open source adoption. But, now things are changing. Enterprises are now citing the "high quality" of open source as the primary reason for using it. This has led to a striking increase in numbers. 64%  of enterprises are currently contributing to open source projects, which is a massive jump from just a few years ago.

The Seventh Annual Future of Open Source Survey, hosted by North Bridge Venture Partners together with Black Duck Software, drives broad industry discussion around open source, and reveals the high degree of change that has occurred in the industry since the last survey.Striking Revelation

One of the striking results that caught the attention in the survey finding is that OSS in academia was identified as a leading trend in open source for the next two years. Taking a cue from the super communities in the commercial world, MIT and Harvard have decided not to separately reinvent the core online platform for education. In fact, they both are aiming to raise the tide for all boats in education by making their course curricula and content open source.     

Another aspect that caught the eye in the survey findings is that open source is gradually making its mark in the defense industry as well. We are also seeing open source in areas like the Department of Veterans Affairs, where they are moving electronic health records system to open source.

So, this year’s Future of Open Source survey represents a high degree of change that has occurred in the industry since the 2012 survey. The most intriguing results to date are:

Government is the largest adopter of open source, ahead of any particular industry (35 percent of respondents)

Security of open source software is making open source a more attractive option than proprietary code
