Migrating to the Cloud? Here’s what you need to know
“Multi-tenancy capability, business agility and flexibility, improved organizational flexibility and productivity, scalable IT platform and cost savings are some of the top motivations for CIOs, IT managers and cloud initiative directors to migrate to the cloud platform.”
Leading companies of all sizes and in every sector (Government, Healthcare, Education and SMEs) are already well-aware of the benefits that cloud-based services can deliver to their enterprises- particularly in terms of cost, speed and agility. However, enterprises who are still new to the Cloud technology must first evaluate key challenges before Migrating to a Cloud Platform. These concerns can be grouped into two parts, namely Business and Technical Factors.
The Cloud environment generates several questions in the minds of decision makers with respect to confidentiality, integrity and availability. To get the maximum value out of the Cloud, it is important that businesses should carefully plan their Cloud migration initiative taking into consideration business and technical concerns. This strategy should not only define how a move to the Cloud would be- but also include the type of Cloud service and deployment strategy to be used, the process of identifying the requirements and much more.
The Cloud is a game changing phase of business world that is impacting the way in which we perceive the future of IT. Cloud promises several benefits in commercial and technical terms, but the challenges too need to be considered when planning for Cloud adoption. A move to the Cloud, therefore, requires a well planned strategy as there are many business and technical constraints that need to be addressed. Regulations are needed to clear doubts with regards to transfer of enterprise data and the ownership / security of data stored on the Cloud.
Executing a migration is a complex and delicate project, and as such it should have a formal project plan and an experienced Cloud consulting partner by your side. This is worth mentioning that organizations have much to gain from the adoption of the Cloud. So, to stay ahead of the curve, organizations must rely on managed cloud service providers for seamless and smooth migration to Cloud.
Are you considering migrating to the cloud? We can help you make the move.
What to Choose? Magento Enterprise vs. Community
If you’re familiar with Magento eCommerce solution, then you probably know about Magento Enterprise and Community. So, before you start the selection process, you must really know both versions of Magento (Community & Enterprise). What are you really paying for Magento Enterprise and what value are you getting out of it?
Let’s find out on the basis of some facts which can help you decide which solution fits best as per your budget and business needs.
Community Edition- Are you a tech-savvy merchant who wants to explore the flexibility of the Magento eCommerce platform? Then, this Community edition may be your preferred choice. Available for free, you can download this edition without any cost. You can even modify—and contribute to—the core code and engage with the community for any support and guidance.
Although this free edition provides many robust features and expert support, this edition gives limited ability to fast-growing and large organizations to run their business operations more effectively.
On the contrary, Magento Enterprise Edition is the high performance, enterprise-class eCommerce platform for fast-growing and large businesses. It has the enterprise-class features and the scalability you need to create an eCommerce solution tailored to your exact business requirements. And it provides a faster, better shopping experience, drive conversion rates and sales, and save costs.
Let’s watch out the key differences-
PCI Compliance Many business owners believe that Community edition is devoid of PCI compliance and it can’t become PCI compliant. The good news is that there are various means to attain PCI compliance. In contrast, Enterprise edition complies PCI requirements. It features the Magento Secure payment bridge (PA-DSS payment bridge) to assist secure payment gateway meeting the industry standards.
Cost The Community Edition is free. This is perhaps one of the main highlights of this edition. Anyone can modify the core code, add features and functionality by installing extensions from the Magento Connect marketplace. Whereas, the Magento paid edition offers more advanced features. Despite the need to pay the subscription fee, opting for the paid version can mean a fast return of investment; which could mean more traffic, more conversion and happy customers.
Performance Many e-commerce business users do not know that the community edition is quite faster than the other software available today. The features are equipped to meet the basic business needs. However, businesses that need more features, scalability , speed and performance may want to go with the paid (enterprise) version.
Functionality Both the free and paid versions offer features that meet the unique requirements of small to mid-size to large enterprises. However, the paid version offers more advanced features. For instance, Enterprise edition is integrated with multiple payment gateways right out of the box, including PayPal. It also has layered-navigation filters to help customers quickly narrow their product options and pinpoint exactly what they’re looking for. Additionally, the paid version has an integrated Google Tag Manager to easily tag your site for campaigns and reporting, and a mobile app toolkit to expand your mobile reach and sales and lot more enterprise- class features.
These are just a few comparison points between Magento Community and Edition, but there are more to be explored. Both the Community and the Enterprise Edition are valuable e-commerce platforms for businesses. Choosing between these two versions can be difficult. Therefore, it is important to consider factors like cost, performance, scalability, security and functionality and business requirements.
Although, the free version seems to be the most logical choice. Businesses that are planning to take their operations to the next level should invest in Magento Enterprise Edition.

The Power of Giving Back: Why Your Enterprise Should Establish an Open Source Presence
Recognized for its scalability, cost-effectiveness and proven track record of innovation, open source technology is driving a paradigm shift in the enterprise world. Enterprises previously uninvolved with open source are now making active contributions and fostering growth within the community.
But why should an established business participate in open source culture? And why now?
1.Visibility
When you contribute a project to the open source community, the existence and nature of the project are visible to the rest of the world. If your contribution is visible to a strategically important community, your business widely communicates plans, goals, features, and progress. A successful contribution opens the doors to communication which translates into the trust of your customers and partners.
2. Standard Project development
Many projects have a goal to develop a standard template, module, theme, API definition or language extensions. Opening up a project to the expert community makes it likely to get the best advice and high adoption rates. Further, decision-making conversations in the open source community center around technical and engineering issues which can be useful to track performance and security issues. Standardization has never been easier
3. Recruiting
It can be a challenge to find and persuade good candidates to work for you, but community contribution can solve a lot of these issues. Smart people like to spend time with other smart people. In the same way, smart developers like to work with smart code. When you or your company contribute useful code, you attract the attention of top tech talent. Not to mention, candidates who come through community channels usually have a more accurate picture of the organization and its goals than those who come in through other recruiting channels.
4. Guidance
By listening to open source contributors about challenges and issues they face—particularly with the technology of the open source project—an enterprise can figure out the best route to mitigate those problems in the future.
5. Formation of a collaborative and inspired team
Giving employees an avenue to give back to the community is important to build a collaborative and inspired team. While some businesses opt for traditional forms of community service, using your IT brains to contribute to the greater good of the virtual community can be just as fulfilling and team-building in practice. In fact, many enterprises are providing leadership opportunities for employees to contribute actively in the open source space.
Today, businesses that encourage community involvement distinguish themselves as smart and caring entities. With that image comes loyal customers and happier employees. But that’s not all; there are so many reasons why enterprises are enjoying the benefits of contributing to open source, and more being discovered every day.

It’s above cost-savings. Enterprises choose open source for quality, innovation and other reasons..
Open-source software, once used primarily because it was cost-effective, now gets top ranking for delivering high quality, scalability , security and innovation, according to the latest Future of Open Source survey. While lowering costs still remains the deciding factor companies elect to participate in open-source projects, companies now view open source as a way to a great alternative to proprietary solutions.
This is the eighth year that Black Duck software and North Bridge provided industry insights around the current state and future trends of open source.
The deeper meaning of this year’s survey: For the first time in a long, long time, this survey results witnessed record levels of corporate participation in open source, as well as the greater impact open source software is having on technology and security.
High Quality For Low Cost? A motivating factor for enterprises
Cost has long driven open-source adoption. Earlier, cost enough was the primary driver for the open source adoption. But, now things are changing. Enterprises are now citing the "high quality" of open source as the primary reason for using it. This has led to a striking increase in numbers. 64% of enterprises are currently contributing to open source projects, which is a massive jump from just a few years ago.
Innovation plays a dominant role
80% of the survey respondents said they use open source because of the advanced features it already has, and they can innovate with the open source software too. In other words, open source gives them the flexibility to add new features without adding much cost. Moreover, they don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
The wheels of open source are strongly moving forward
It has been an incredible year of open source software, with businesses large and small taking a route to open source adoption. In fact, many open source apps are now considered superior and competitive to their proprietary counterparts. The quality of open source, capability to continuously improve and scale, and innovation are the key drivers of its adoption. In the coming years, we can expect open source unlock the potential of a new generation of technologies- the Internet of things, big data and cloud. Hopefully, we can expect to see many more interesting findings in near future.
Is Magento leading the e-Commerce space?
Many large and growing businesses today put their trust in Magento software, as they know they will get rapid deployment and the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry. Moreover, Magento’s great out-of-the box experience can provide them the ultimate brand control, a high degree of flexibility, and a scalable, robust feature-set that correspond to their mission-critical objectives.
This blog is an attempt to explore the reasons for Magento’s phenomenal success and why Magento takes a leading position among eCommerce platforms.
1. According to the 2014 IR Top 500 Guide, Magento, along with IBM and Oracle, is one of the three leading providers to the top e-retailers in Canada and the US. For mid market merchants (those with $20 million to $75 million in annual sales online), Magento products are now the top platforms for mid market merchants. Additionally, from the 13 midmarket merchants that Magento had before, Magento grew on the list to 24 in 2014, overtaking Oracle in the top spot in this segment
2. According to Magento usage statistics provided by builtWith, more than 7,000 of the top 1 million e-Commerce sites are using Magento platform.
3. According to the April 2014 e-Commerce Survey by Tom Robertshaw, Magento has retained its leading position for the fourth consecutive year. According to the survey results, it is likely that Magento remains the most popular platform on the market, with a 34 percent increase in online retail sites from last year.
4. Magento has increased penetration in key markets with a 45 percent share in Australia, 42 percent share in the U.K, 30 percent share in France and a 26 percent share in Germany. Source
5. By holding a stable 26% of the marketshare of the e-Commerce market, Magento has witnessed an increasing number of fashion, retail and other brands using their software. Magento provides eCommerce solutions that let you customize the look, feel, and functionality of your site to reflect your brand’s personality. Considering the remarkable benefits of Magento, it’s easy to ascertain why major brands such as Vizio, The North Face, Officemax Fred Perry, Harvey Nichols, Studio Moderna, Rebecca Minkoff, Olympus and Samsung have embraced it for their e-Commerce requirements.
As you can see from the above stats, Magento is the leading open source e-Commerce platform. Magento has a leading position because it is the e-Commerce platform that is designed from the ground up to be configured, extended and customized to meet each business requirements, providing unique flexibility to create compelling brand experiences that delight consumers and increase sales.
The charm of Open Source in Cloud Computing
The role of open source technology is quite impactful on the cloud computing world. Whether you want to build a public, private or hybrid cloud, there are free and open source tools that can help you provide a complete solution or augment your existing solution.
Why Open Source is good for cloud computing? The BIG reason is in the way open source software stacks empower companies to build exactly what they require, without incurring huge costs.
There are other influencers too. Let’s discuss one by one:
Free from expensive licensing model Adoption of cloud is not just a trend, but has become a part of business strategy for organizations to optimize their IT investments, and improve or expand their existing services. Additionally, most organizations can’t afford the expensive licensing model of proprietary software vendors. In such a scenario, open source reduces the cost barrier to build a private cloud. Good examples of open source cloud platforms like OpenStack, Apache CloudStack, Eucalyptus and OpenNebula come to mind for this kind of a service.
Facilitating custom clouds It provides a greater customization capability for your precise solution architecture, application integration needs, security requirements, and real-time business analytics. You can also build a differentiated cloud service to meet customers’ needs.
Drive more innovation Open Source not just supports but further encourages innovation in the development of new cloud products. This is the main reason most of cloud infrastructure is backed by the open source LAMP stack. Additionally, the licensing model of open source makes it easier for cloud vendors to scale their infrastructure without any barrier, and also come up with their own new cloud offerings.
Deploy on the infrastructure of your choice Virtualization, storage, networking, and other layers are not tied to any particular vendor technology infrastructure. So, organizations can leverage efficient storage, smart backups, security and compliance without any issue of vendor lock-in.
Open standards and more collaboration lead to better quality
The flexibility and freedom is the key to innovate and produce better quality. The huge advantage is the collaboration between more technology providers and users. The support of standard bodies, VCs and researchers enables to add new features regularly, and test the existing ones under strict condition. This ultimately leads to better quality of the end solution.
It’s now good to see that open source has become not only a preferred choice but it is also driving innovation for flexible cloud computing solution. The best examples are the cloud stack vendors such as Cloudera, Hortonworks and Openstack the way they are innovating with the help of Open Source stack.
OSSCube has helped many enterprises use Cloud Computing from AWS for building sophisticated, scalable applications while reducing costs. For more information on OSSCube’s Cloud Services, visit http://www.osscube.com/managed-cloud-services
Do you think Open Source Software Has Made Deep Inroads Into SMB’s Only? Not Necessarily
So, you get a feel that maybe Open Source Software(OSS) is something that only SMB’s would go in for as they give them a profoundly big bang for their buck. However from interactions with open source pioneers, I got to know that many large enterprises including government agencies are flocking to open source software in lieu of the proprietary ones.
While the SMB’s might be relying on the open source services for bringing down the total cost of ownership and increasing ease of use, the big enterprises establish a professional setup to work on the Open Source project to customize and enhance it as per their mission critical needs and even contribute back to the open source community on the way.
The evolution of the Open Source projects, the community interest in them and improvements in flexibility, significant cost saving capability and security of the OSS also reinforces the faith of bigger enterprises to adopt OSS. Today, Open Source software has good alternatives for almost every commercial proprietary software systems in the market. In this regards, do you think open source software can equate the performance of commercial proprietary software? Well, in most cases they do or even surpass. For instance, The Coverity Scan Service, which analyses more than 450 million lines of software code, recently reveals that the quality of open source software continues to shadows many home-grown and legacy software systems.
There are many such commercial products built on top of popular successful Open Source projects that come out as a mid-way solution in terms of lowering cost and meet best of the expected performance, like EnterpriseDB based on Postgres. Leave apart enterprises, big or small, at individual level also we are surrounded with OSS in abundance. How many of you are browsing the net on a Mozilla Firefox browser or on an Android based device?
While some might argue that Android is not a true Open Source Solution, but it indeed is the first step towards the Open Source Mobile operating software systems. And, there is Mozilla FireFox OS coming your way that probably will satisfy all the criterion of a true Open Source OS.
I believe that in almost every vertical, the adoption of Open Source Software is evolving continuously in terms of technology, speed, quality and security, and becoming the preferred choice, not just an alternative to commercial software. What do you think? If you would like to take this discussion deeply or need an open source consultant you can rely on, then OSSCube is just a call away.
OSSCube is a leading global Open Source Software focused company, providing an integrated value chain of services encompassing mission critical application development, product customization and implementation, consulting and training services, on open source products and technologies, delivered through its principal locations spread across North America, the UK & India.
Real World Reflections of the Seventh Annual Future of Open Source Survey
Open source has evolved into an influential movement and its adoption has seen unprecedented growth. With this increased adoption, comes a new set of questions that will shape its future.
The Seventh Annual Future of Open Source Survey, hosted by North Bridge Venture Partners together with Black Duck Software, drives broad industry discussion around open source, and reveals the high degree of change that has occurred in the industry since the last survey.Striking Revelation
One of the striking results that caught the attention in the survey finding is that OSS in academia was identified as a leading trend in open source for the next two years. Taking a cue from the super communities in the commercial world, MIT and Harvard have decided not to separately reinvent the core online platform for education. In fact, they both are aiming to raise the tide for all boats in education by making their course curricula and content open source.
Another aspect that caught the eye in the survey findings is that open source is gradually making its mark in the defense industry as well. We are also seeing open source in areas like the Department of Veterans Affairs, where they are moving electronic health records system to open source.
So, this year’s Future of Open Source survey represents a high degree of change that has occurred in the industry since the 2012 survey. The most intriguing results to date are:
Government is the largest adopter of open source, ahead of any particular industry (35 percent of respondents)
Companies are working within open source communities to reduce their IT costs, and to make it easier to attract top technology talent and IT staff, this represents shift in priorities
Security of open source software is making open source a more attractive option than proprietary code
"Better Quality Software," which was the fifth-placed reason for using open source in 2011, is now the top reason for open source adoption.
Formal Commercial Vendor Support", which traditionally has been seen as a vital requirement for enterprises, ranked dead last
SaaS has moved up as the top source of revenue generation, an increase from fifth place in 2011, demonstrating the close correlation between the cloud
The 2013 Future of Open Source Survey shows the revolutionary effect of OSS trends, key drivers of open source adoption, community involvement, and the views, perspectives of more than 800 respondents – the largest in the survey's history - from both non-vendor and vendor communities.
