RIP Mary Ellen Mark (1940 - 2015)
This week has been noted in photography circles for the passing of legendary photographer Mary Ellen Mark. Mark was an American photographer well-known for her documentary photography and photo essays of people who were "away from mainstream society and toward its more interesting, often troubled fringes." Mark’s focus on the human condition has been a recurring theme throughout her career, and her exhibitions, published books and projects highlighted social issues such as homelessness, loneliness, drug addiction and prostitution. Her photo essays have been published in LIFE, New York Times magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. Mark’s high degree of humanism and lifetime dedication to highlight social issues serve as a great inspiration to our community of photographers, educators and friends of photography.
