Storm on the Island
by Seamus Heaney
We are prepared: we build our houses squat, Sink walls in rock and roof them with good slate. This wizened earth has never troubled us With hay, so, as you see, there are no stacks Or stooks that can be lost. Nor are there trees Which might prove company when it blows full Blast: you know what I mean — leaves and branches Can raise a tragic chorus in a gale So that you listen to the thing you fear Forgetting that it pummels your house too. But there are no trees, no natural shelter. You might think that the sea is company, Exploding comfortably down on the cliffs, But no: when it begins, the flung spray hits The very windows, spits like a tame cat Turned savage. We just sit tight while wind dives And strafes invisibly. Space is a salvo, We are bombarded by the empty air. Strange, it is a huge nothing that we fear.

Forgiveness, horse! Why do I rail on thee, Since thou, created to be awed by man, Wast born to bear?

The role of the lover is exactly the same role of the artist. If I love you, I must make you aware of things you do not see.

I'm sure this has been pointed out many times before but I loooove that buffy consistently wears white when she's about to sacrifice herself/change something fundamental about the world and in turn herself. she wears it both times she dies, she wears it when she's confronting adam and tearing down the initiative, she wears it in the series finale when she changes the world forever while sacrificing sunnydale. I'm not sure if it's conscious after prophecy girl but it's a detail I love.
no thank you i am busy investigating my fear
Emily Wilson has inadvertently created a fascinating new way to categorize basically any visual media ever made
image description: a cartesian plane with color-coded quadrants. the x-axis goes from 'sex scenes' to 'no sex scenes' and the y-axis goes from 'food looks good' to 'food looks horrible' /end description
Alternate timeline in which all Greek and Latin roots are swapped:
catastrophe -> contraverse cephalopod -> capitoped chlorophyll -> viridofolia democracy -> populimpery homicide -> anthropoctony homosexual -> equigamic kilometer -> millimensure interregnum -> mesarchy magnanimous -> megapsychic manuscript -> chirography motorcycle -> ergatorote microscope -> parvovisor oxygen -> acidofex polyamory -> multierasty television -> remotoscope universe -> monostrophe
august soon, the sunday of the year. i am cleaning my flat, throwing the windows open, chasing july with all its miasmas out. out out out, with a duster. judas janus month. i have more important things to be doing but my brain feels too stultified by the summer's clutter to settle to anything. this year has been a hinge year so far, a swing door between past & potential, & i feel so, so tired. weary of the back & forth of it, the pendulum pendulant perpetual motion, the in between in between in between. i want to rest. i want, also, to work. & still the sun won't stop fucking shining. not a damn cloud in the sky, & the mountains are on fire.
poetry fans be like i love that poem it made me feel fucking awful & horrible & scared

An Interview with Richard Siken
I need you all to know Shakespeare felt the need to weigh in on whether Achilles or Patroclus tops
Cressida: “In kissing, do you render or receive?”
Patroclus: “Both take and give.”
