i’ve warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises.

as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it’s just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we’re small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, “i’m not here to hurt you. here’s something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we’re on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i’m being light-hearted and non-threatening right now.”

small talk isn’t to get to know a person. it’s just a greeting to affirm you’re buddies in the universe.

i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it.

you’re the middle chaos between osamu’s quiet menace and atsumu’s loud menace. the three of you together? terrifying. like in high school, whole schools go silent when they see “the miya triplets” approaching.

you’re the one who dyes their hair whenever the color fades. one time, atsumu’s hair glowed in the dark because you accidentally bought the wrong one.

when one of them has a nightmare, expect them in your bed. no, they won’t wake you up like cute brothers you see on tv, they’ll jump you WWE style.

people assume you’d be into someone wild like atsumu, but no. you have the world’s most confusing, stomach-twisting crush on sakusa kiyoomi—the most composed, germ-conscious, unbothered man alive.

atsumu: “you? LIKE sakusa? he sanitizes his soul every time ya breathe near him.”

you: “yeah, well, he’s pretty when he’s judgmental.”

osamu: “god help that poor man.”

your brothers lost it when they found out. they act like your crush is a matter of national security.

atsumu immediately starts whispering about it in practice.

atsumu: “hey kiyoomi~ guess who was talkin’ ‘bout your curls last night~”

sakusa: stiffens visibly “...what.”

you: “ATSUMU I WILL END YOU.”

osamu, visiting, filming the entire thing: “don’t stop ‘er, this is better than tv.”

sakusa doesn’t know how to handle it. like, at all.

you show up to a game with snacks for the team, and he freezes when you hand him a disinfectant wipe too.

you: “thought you might like it. it’s lavender scented.”

sakusa: blinks five times in slow motion “...thank you.”

he goes home that night and sits on the edge of his bed, holding the lavender wipe like it’s an engagement ring.

the twins start shipping you two aggressively.

osamu: “ya know, she only makes extra rice balls for people she likes.”

sakusa: “...oh.”

atsumu: “ya better marry her before i tell everyone she calls ya ‘pretty boy’ in her sleep—”

you: “TSUM, I WILL PUT HAIR REMOVAL CREAM IN YOUR HAIR DYE, I SWEAR—”

every time you show up to watch practice, sakusa plays like his life depends on it.

bokuto: “why’s omi suddenly diving for balls like a madman?”

hinata: “y/n’s here!”

bokuto: “ah. love.”

osamu and atsumu make it worse by giving him tips on how to impress you.

“she likes confidence.”

“and food.”

“and bein’ held.”

sakusa, horrified: “...held?”

and when sakusa finally tries to flirt (awkwardly), you completely short-circuit.

sakusa: “you... look nice today.”

you, turning red: “uh. you— you look sanitized.”

osamu, whispering: “smooth.”

atsumu is cackling like a mad man, rolling around the gym floor and gets a used sock straight to his face.

atsumu has a group chat called ‘Operation Make Sakusa Blush’ that you’re not supposed to know about. spoiler: you do.

sakusa eventually admits to osamu (because he’s calmer out of the two, totally.) that he might actually like you back. osamu just hums. “good. but ya gotta deal with the rest of us if ya hurt her.” and sakusa knows it’s not a threat. it’s a promise.

you and sakusa start quietly dating after a while—secretly, at first. except it’s not secret at all because atsumu live-tweets every romantic interaction:

“my sister just brushed kiyoomi’s hand while handin’ him sanitizer. he looked like he saw god.”

eventually, sakusa does ask you out properly—after disinfecting the pen he uses to write the note.

“will you go out with me? i’ll bring wipes.”

you: “only if you let me kiss you through your mask.”

sakusa: “...deal.”

and your brothers are there, cheering, screaming, and threatening to follow you both to your date “just in case.”

sakusa’s patience? eternally tested. but your smile makes it worth every second.

even if it comes with two loud, overprotective brothers who text him hourly reminders like:

“treat ‘er right or we disinfect you.”
