I love everything about this scene and I've been wanting to gush about it for a while now and I can't not do that now. Because there's so much going on here in the writing and it's laid out so subtly it's incredible, especially looking back on it knowing that Candy is Turbo. Because Ralph's line, "Who are you, the guy that makes the donuts?", while a bit weird, works in story as just a simple jab Ralph came up with to poke fun at Turbo coming in by doing a couple of donuts around Ralph before parking the car...

But it's a reference.

And, importantly, it's a reference that Turbo recognizes.

And giggles at!

Something I love about Ralph is that he's such a sarcastic smart ass throughout a lot of the movie, especially with all of the old pop-culture references he makes. Not only is it such a good bit of characterization for a game character from the 80s, but it also works so well in the narrative to further foreshadow that KC is not what he seems.

Because Ralph is referencing a commercial that would be just before KC's time if he was really from Sugar Rush.

This referential back-and-forth is something that Ralph and Turbo engage in with each other with fascinating consistency. Because Ralph makes referential wisecracks all throughout the movie, but the only person who seems to both recognize and appreciate them is Turbo. Likewise, when Turbo makes a "You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses" joke, despite Ralph being absolutely furious at him, Ralph actually takes the time to engage with the joke and literally hit Turbo with glasses instead of just grabbing him right then and there glasses be damned.

It's also noteworthy that Turbo, under the guise of King Candy, only makes old references when he'd around Ralph or doing something related to Ralph. (i.e. "One of these things is not like the others")

Which if find very, very interesting.

This artwork is based on one of the Ao3 fanfics that got me interested in the Demolition Derby/Wrecktastic/Bara Beacon ship:

Beforehand, I didn’t know that this ship (Wreck It Ralph x Turbo/King Candy) was a rarepair in the fandom. Even to this day this ship doesn’t have a lot of content.

Yet, when I read this fic along with Bugbot’s “Why Bother Play (When It’s Unfair)”, it got me loving this ship almost instantly. So much so that I decided to draw Demo Derby fanart based on these works.

This artwork in particular is based on a scene where Turbo and Ralph start to get along for the first time. I don’t want to spoil too much, but I thought it was a really sweet chapter. I made this using a pencil to sketch out the forms and color pencils to color in the details.

In your AU, what was Vanellope's reaction when she found out that Turbo was alive?

What was vanillopea‘s reaction when she found out Turbo was still alive in my AU I would say not scared she was more mad and pissed off that he was still alive and Ralph had to hold her down so she wouldn’t try and fight turbo and Turbo wasn’t helping in the situation either let me tell you Ralph had a hard time calming her down so he could explain

After he explained, it didn’t really change anything they still hate each other. I like to think they act more like cats and fight like cats and Ralph has to deal with that.

Wait a minute I just had a funny thought in my head because if the turbo twins are still alive and they become friends with Penelope, and then they reconcile with turbo and they found out that Turbo has a huge huge crush on Ralph and also knows that Ralph has a crush on turbo I’m gonna tell you I can just imagine the teasing that would come from those twins just hear some examples

One of the twins: sooooo you like them big turbo: shut glitch up

The other twin ; hey Ralph, did you know? [ Perceives to Tell him all the things that turbo likes about him and loves about him ]

Well turbo is about to throw a crowbar at him

OMG THEY WOULD BE RELENTLESS! alkasdjflksldkfj also okay so in the demo derby fic I'm writing there actually is planned for scenes back in the early 80s where Ralph is basically like the catalyst for the twins and Turbo (who I write in the story as their older brother) actually reconnecting and bonding and being a family again (before Turbo fucks everything up but that part gets revealed later lol) and both twins very immediately come to the same three realizations:

Ralph is cool af

Ralph is good for Turbo

Ralph and Turbo are into each other

So at the same time that they're both becoming friends with Ralph and finally getting a chance to actually hang out with their brother beyond him stepping in to protect them from the fallout from shit around the arcade related to him, they're both also trying super hard to push both Ralph and Turbo in the direction of confessing in the hopes that one of them (probably Ralph) will finally get that ball rolling, and while I'm not sure about specific details for the fic (thematic consistency and what not lol) I do like imagining that they're absolute menaces about it and at one point they just hang up mistletoe everywhere, like an aggressive amount of a mistletoe, to the point where Turbo is at their door like:

"WHY DID YOU COVER OUR GAME IN MISTLETOE?!?!"

"For the holidays :D"

"IT'S FUCKING MARCH!"

".......... happy holidays?"

ajskjflkajsdklfjakls so if they survived I'd like to think they're just there watching these two dorks like "thirty years. they've been idiots like this for thirty years." and also get like a bet going around about who would confess again first, initially starting as a bet the twins and Vanellope and Calhoun were in on before quickly becoming an arcade wide bet because they kept trying and failing to find anyone who would be willing to bet that Turbo would confess first WHICH TURBO THEN CATCHES WIND OF and goes and tells Ralph about, to which they then devise a plan to fuck with everyone where Turbo develops a disguise for Ralph (since everyone would be too suspicious of anything Turbo shaped after the everything of Sugar Rush) so Ralph can go and be the only one to bet on Turbo, and then devise a plan for Turbo to give Ralph a fake confession in front of a bunch of people but Turbo flubs it somehow and ends up actually confessing, which flusters Ralph and causes him to blurt out his own confession, which then leads to someone putting two and two together about who the person who bet on Turbo actually was, which creates a huge mess wrt the bet and whether or not everyone owes Ralph money but at that point both Ralph and Turbo are too busy with the "holy shit we're actually still in love with each other oh fuck what do we do now???" to even notice lmao

OK, I would like to think when Ralph and Turbo meet again is when Ralph is trying to find Penelope because the plug with the computers back on he wants to go find her to surprise her but instead of finding Penelope he Fine turbo instead of being mad he’s more surprised, and confused he wants to ask how is he still alive but he doesn’t get a chance because Turbo tells him to run why is because he’s being chased by cyber police or virus police OK (side, note. I personally has never watched the second movie cause I didn’t like it and it made me cringe all the time but I am stubborn so I’m adding it here even though I don’t like the movie, but I’m gonna keep Ralph’s personality the same way he was in the first movie because they did my boy run in the second movie OK finish renting anyway)

I like to think they know each other in the past they weren’t exactly friends, but they were kind of friends because turbo was the only person that weren’t really scared of Ralph at that time I think they were more like smoking, buddies even though Ralph did didn’t smoke or like cherry eating buddies but the only time when he seen turbo wasn’t smoking is with Felix. He always assumed that they were dating just assume he wouldn’t ask. It was not his business but every time when he looked, he always sort of catch turbo looking at him. Okay anyway. after the cyber police or virus police he would explain how he’s here and still alive and then they get into dumbass adventures, and and get closer it sort of like an enemies to friends to lovers thing. I’m going here and something bad

happens where turbo glitched really bad and turns into Cy-Bug, King Candy's and one of the cyber police like shoot him and electrocute him and instead of Ralph leaving him and going to try find Penelope again, instead he grab him and runs back to the entrance to the arcade and that’s all I got so yeah

Hello Do you have any Ralph x turbo headcannons 

ASDLFJALKJDF I HAVE SO MANY OMG I'M GOING TO LIST A FEW

Constantly touching somehow (like holding hands, Turbo chilling on Ralph's shoulder/leaning against Ralph, Ralph keeping his hand against Turbo's back/keeping a hand close to Turbo in case he needed to "protect" him, etc.). Two of the most touch starved bastards in the entire arcade get into a relationship lol.

This one's about them knowing each other in the 80s but I love the idea that Turbo was one of the few characters that was not intimidated at all by Ralph when they first met, and I like to headcanon that it led to Ralph taking an interest in Turbo which led to Turbo taking an interest in Ralph (because Ralph, in turn, was clearly not intimidated or annoyed by Turbo)

Another headcanon I have is that at one point Ralph asked Turbo about cars and how they worked because he was curious and called the pedals "buttons" and Turbo found it so funny and cute that he never called them pedals around Ralph again no matter how many times Ralph asked for him to just tell him what they're actually called, he'd just be like "nope, they're called buttons from now until the rest of forever."

adkjflakjdf I love to headcanon that when alone with Ralph, Turbo was very much just like the silly guy we see him being as King Candy, while Ralph was also very much the witty, quick thinking guy we see him as but also waaaaaay more sarcastic when it was just him and Turbo because he could both be himself and because he and Turbo could bounce off of each other really well, to the point where they could very easily distract each other on accident and lose track of time and what they were doing lol (loved their little bit of banter in the movie omg)

So this one involves another headcanon of mine where Turbo spent time in the 80s learning to code by figuring out his own code (pre-programmed with the mechanical knowledge he'd need to be able to work on his own car + some circumstance that would drive him to need to learn how to mess with his own code) since from a programmer perspective it makes a bit more sense lol, but I like the idea that the green-ish undershirt Ralph wears was sort of a gift from Turbo since it's not really indicated or hinted at in his 8-bit character sprite and I think it's a fun idea. Like, Turbo was trying to figure out how to actually make shit rather than just modify or copy it and at some point made that big undershirt for Ralph as his first ever creation, though it wasn't the exact color he'd meant to make it, but Ralph loved and appreciated it so much that he kept it.

Turbo actually being willing to share things with Ralph where he's very well known for being a completely selfish bastard

Them being equally protective of each other omg

ajdsflkajdlfkjlsakdfj okay this one is tangentially related but in a post-Sugar Rush Turbo survives and something something character growth and getting together/back together with Ralph etc. universe, Turbo ending up becoming the fun dad between him and Ralph with Vanellope because at any point when she wants something/to get away with something she can just go up to Turbo and be like "Hey remember how you ruined my life for fifteen years. You owe me." and, like, she's right. She's totally right.

OK, I have a question if Turbo ever have flirted with Ralph before never expect him to flirt back do you think he’d be surprised and flustered or just like oh 

alkdjfklajdsf so for the way that I like to characterize Ralph and Turbo, especially in my writing, Turbo becomes comfortable flirting with Ralph very quickly because Ralph initially doesn't flirt back (due to being flustered and out of his depth) and has very low self esteem, so he can adapt a script that both allows him to play plausible deniability if he's ever pressed on why he's doing it (he's joking, he's correcting the erroneous view Ralph has of himself, etc) without having to actually face his own feelings or challenge his own negative self perception because he can just assume Ralph isn't interested in him. Like, something I like headcanoning is that Turbo's appearance was pretty off-putting to players and the denizens of the arcade even early on and that Turbo built a bravado around "see, I'm so good at what I do that my game is popular despite how I look!" but inside he internalized the idea of "I'm ugly and now my personality sucks so obviously no one would ever be interested in me but that's fine since my game is popular with the players."

So when Ralph starts flirting back Turbo is entirely unprepared, so he's both surprised, flustered, and scrambling to deflect it in some way so he can try and figure out how to turn this into something more familiar and in line with what he already believes about himself, but it leaves a noticeable enough crack in his bravado for long enough for Ralph to see it and realize that maybe Turbo's self esteem is just as bad as his was.
