MARINELAND CLAIMS THEY ARE TRANSPARENT - WE CHALLENGE MARINELAND TO POST A CURRENT VIDEO OF ZEUS In the past, Marineland has provided video of Zeus but only from a front, head on angle where you cannot see his condition. So we are having trouble getting an official count on Marineland Ontario walruses. We need to find out if anyone has recent photos taken between May 21, 2017 and Now (July 29, 2017) as we have two out of four walruses accounted for. So if anyone has pictures of Zeus and/or Smooshi, from this time frame can you message me please. Thanks.

Animal Welfare Act regulations state under 9CFR Section 3.103(b) Facilities, Outdoor, Shelter: Natural or artificial shelter which is appropriate for the species concerned, when local climatic conditions are taken into consideration, shall be provided for all marine mammals kept outdoors to afford them protection from the weather or from direct sunlight.
The foliage found around the 3 pools at the Mirage hotel do not provide enough protection from the harsh sunlight in the Mojave desert. Not only do we have temps reaching over 110F regularly in the summer, but nearly all of those days are days with high UV index rates. That means you are getting maximum damage from being in the sun. The Mirage knows this is a problem, and that is why they lather on sunscreen every day. Even the trainers must be suffering from the heat because there has been an increase of shade structures and use of misters during the hotter months. The dolphins still sit, 26 years this October (2017), without any shade. This is a simple shade structure, and it should be put up already.

And Sea World was worried about him at Marineland. Both places suck. Poor Ike.
Dolphins Don’t Belong in Captivity
Stuck trying decide on favours. I love the idea of the bottles with sand but not sure a) we can do them in the 30 days we have; b) where the hell do you find small little bottles? I also love the idea of the starfish as long as I can find enough small-med fake starfish to do that with.

So many amazing ideas I keep finding. We are going to have a small sun tent that I’m hoping I can string lights across. Anything with real candles we are replacing with battery operated ones because of clumsy people and kids. I’m kinda digging the slight coral accent in small flowers. Might be an idea.
I have so many idea and so little time to do it in. Yikes
So I’m getting married July 1st. Which happens to be Canada’s 150th birthday but also Mat and mines 5th anniversary as a couple. We are going with an ocean theme. I am so lucky to have some amazing friends help us out so that we can pull this off not only in short time but tight budget. So prepare to see tons of wedding crap show up. Lol.

Cetaceans exhibit threat displays in captivity. This behavior is not cute.
Signs of a threat display in whales & dolphins can include:
“S-posture” (click info source for photo)
bubble blowing/bubble cloud - bubbles released from blowhole
jaw popping - loud popping sound coupled with a fast closing motion of the jaws.
open mouth - a sustained (at least 2 seconds) gaping of the jaws, usually oriented to a recipient.
It’s also important to note that the last two whales exhibit bubble clouds and are actually ramming the glass with their melon.

My friends and I were tossing around ideas about how we could make a difference on this issue as students. We had been talking to scientists, activists, and former trainers—putting in a lot of hours and doing lots of research. At one point I remember one of us suggesting, “Why not make a film about this?” Voiceless is about what we learned. Voiceless is about changing this issue for the better, and giving a voice to those who don’t have one. But beyond that, we wanted to prove that students—teenagers, kids—can make a difference. Today a video surfaced of Marineland walrus, Zeus. Last year photos showing him thin and underweight surfaced as well. Never thought that he could look any worse but today’s video shows an emaciated Zeus barely being able to move and even falling down from being so weak. What would make Marineland think that Zeus was in any condition to be out there? Do they think he’s a healthy animal? Are they that dumb?

SeaWorld Entertainment has ended orca breeding, but the company continues to weigh in on legislation phasing out display of killer whales, according to lobbying records.
“The company spent $650,000 lobbying federal lawmakers on a variety of issues so far this year including a bill phasing out killer-whale display. Records show SeaWorld spent $120,000 on lobbying costs in California this year, with a bill banning orca breeding the only one listed.”
“SeaWorld spokeswoman Aimee Jeansonne Becka said the company is not taking an official position on the California bill but has been “working with” its sponsor, Assemblyman Richard Bloom… Becka said the company isn’t advocating against the bill but “we don’t think the federal legislation is necessary.“
To think that money and effort could have been better used to get the US Army Corps of Engineers and state of Idaho to remove the Snake River dams.
This is infuriating. I think that may be more than they contributed to the KWRCP (but I still haven’t been able to parse the precise amount they contributed. Has anyone?)
All 4 lower Snake River dams are in the state of Washington. But yes, SeaWorld could make a bold move, both economically, and politically, in conjunction with the WA state governor, Inslee, senators, and the President to get a strong environmental win that helps the overwhelming majority of stakeholders.
