Behind the Scenes - Part 2: The Original Music
Following up from the post about the animatic, here’s a piece of music that to my knowledge has only ever been heard by 2 people until now. One of the original plans for the 2015 Frog Dog Log short was that once I finished animation, I would then hand it off to Chris Roberts (Orca Life), who wanted to experiment with sound design and music following our collaboration on Transmission in 2012.
I wanted to be as hands-off as possible for this aspect of this short, only going so far as to suggest that I wanted something plucky like a banjo (which neither of us own…). Chris delivered this to me, and while it wasn’t intended to sync up with any aspect of the film, it pretty much set the mood for how I thought about these characters moving forward. It had a very simple and peaceful, Animal Crossing-esque vibe, that up until that point, I hadn’t considered. But, as discussed in the last post, I never did finish that film, and this track remained in a folder on my computer till now.
When it came to revisiting the project in early 2017, we both thought back about the logistics of jumping into a 2.5 minute short as Chris’ first sound design attempt and realized that may be daunting for both of us. I suggested I would come up with a 30 or so second short we could experiment on instead, which was to be a film about sentient smoke from a failed cooking experiment… but then I realized I already had a character that was a sentient cloud, and thus Hog & Fog came to be. So, if anyone ever wanted to know why the spin-off released before the main project, now you know.
As for the Frog Dog Log short that I eventually did finish, I ended up making and recording all of the music myself instead. This wasn’t a knock on what Chris had done prior, which I’m very grateful for, but as the new version of the film became reflective of my own process in making Brazey shorts completely by myself, it felt right that the music for Frog’s short should also have a DIY feel as well. This entire journey is ultimately why Chris received a Thank You credit in the final film, as a reminder that he set the tone in motion years prior.
More behind the scenes of Frog Dog Log (and Hog & Fog), this time about the musical process and its origins.

In anticipation of another...
It’s okay James Gunn, I know how cool it feels to release a fake mixtape/prop for a movie I made too.
Orca Life - “Fall In” from Among Waves
Experimental music video from Chris Roberts’ latest Orca Life album.
The video experiments I made and used for the Among Waves album art are the same ones that I then used to create this video, this time overlaying my experimental footage over footage that Chris had taken himself.
Because Photoshop and After Effects have the same options for layer modes, I treated this video the same way as the album artwork, in the hopes that I could create as true of a visual companion to that artwork as possible.
The new album from Orca Life is out now on out Bandcamp.
Spazzkid(Facebook、Twitter、Soundcloud)の「Promise EP]」はエレク…
Sittingbythechurchwithdan premiered my new remix of the Spazzkid track Promise.
I drew/inked a new identity for Chris Roberts’ Orca Life music pseudonym. It’s currently being used on all his social media, and will also appear in any future albums of his.
Chris wanted the art to be of his cat, Jesse, sampled here in a track of his own name on the Otherworldly Mystics - Book One compilation (which I also illustrated).
Both Jesse and the lettering we drawn in pencil and then inked with a brush pen, and scanned/edited in Photoshop.
The new Rachel Thomasin album is out now at our Bandcamp.
In this week's Notes from Left of the Dial, we check out some songs and videos from A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Grace Joyner, The Away Days, Prom Body, Cereus Bright and Themonsiurbeat.
