While out taking photos I saw this Pied Billed Grebe with fishing wire tangled around his beak and neck

I watched it for a while, saw it try and fail to eat a crawfish because it couldn't get its mouth all the way open. After a while, it swam up to me and just kind of lingered a few feet away.

So I decided to do the only rational thing, and grabbed a bird

Removed the wire, did a quick once-over to make sure there wasn't anymore, and off they swam

New Zealand giraffe weevil, Lasiorhynchus barbicornis, Brentidae

The New Zealand giraffe weevil is a species of straight-snouted weevil endemic to New Zealand. This species shows extreme sexual dimorphism: females can measure as long as 50mm while males can be as large as 90mm, with a snout as long as their body. Weevil larvae tunnel in wood for as long as two years before emerging as adults, but adults live only a few weeks.

I had been aware of this Very Long species (Marpissa pikei) for a few years but somehow they eluded me (probably by looking like Grass). Finally managed to find a couple, of both sexes. They're very sweet and silly and I love them.

The long-headed toothpick grasshopper (Achurum carinatum) lives and feeds among tall grass in the southeast US.

They’re flightless and not very fast or agile by grasshopper standards, but like a stick insect their camouflage seems to make up for it!

In Florida, they breed year-round and are abundant in this prairie habitat in January when few other insects are active.
